This thread is for suggestions and questions for the various categories. The thread for participants is located HERE.

1. “O" is for October: Read a book that starts with 'O' or a book whose author's first or last name starts with 'O'.

2. Happy Birthday!: Read a book from an October birthday celebrant's GR bookshelf whose name/nickname starts with the same letter as yours. If no one has the same letter, choose someone with the closest letter to yours alphabetically. RRRC October Birthday List

3. Geography: Read a book whose author, character or setting is from Maine. OR, Maine is known for its fishing industry and picturesque fishing villages and also for its vast wilderness areas – so, read a book involving the fishing/seafood industry, or a book set in a small coastal town, on the ocean, or in a wilderness area.

4. Mad Hatter Day (October 6) Read a book with a character that might be considered to be crazy, or a book with a hat on the cover.

8. Wear Something Gaudy Day (October 17): Read a book with a character who is obsessed with (or at least very interested in) clothing or fashion, or a book with a brightly colored cover.

9. Halloween (October 31): Read a paranormal romance, or a book with a character that is hiding something, or is not as he/she appears to be.

Fran | 10999 comments Hi Karen,

For #3 Geography, can I use Coming Clean (Dirty Laundry, #3) by Inez Kelley ?
It says they go to a lake for the weekend. Assuming it's a cabin in woods on lake scenario but not sure.

Hi, Fran!

That would work for me - maybe it's because of where I live, but the idea of a weekend or vacation at a lake NOT being out in the woods would never have entered my mind :)

Fran | 10999 comments Thanks Karen :)

If it turns out differently when I read it then I won't use it for that category.

Ty | 1943 comments er, so does a scar count as a disability/injury for the following category?

7. White Cane Safety Day (October 15): Read a book with a character that has a disability or injury, or a book where a character is involved in public safety (police officer, firefighter, etc.)

Hmmmm, that's a tough one! I think if the scar is something that becomes part of the storyline - affects the person in some way, physically or emotionally, I would say yes, but if it's just mentioned in passing as part of the person's description, then no.

I hope that helps, Ty!

OK, so although the blurb states they are going to a cabin by a lake for some hanky panky, they don't actually make it there! They must go the next day, but the entire story takes place in the couple's house the night before the trip, LOL. So I used it for another category :)

thanks for the reply! I'm thinking yes for Creed (Unfinished Hero, #2) by Kristen Ashley . So I might have entered way too many challenges this month and probably need a shortcut somewhere. haha.

Fran | 10999 comments Hi Karen!

This might be stretching it but....can I use Shattered Glass for National Angel Food Cake Day (October 10)? Although there are no angels in the book there is an Angelica, and Glass calls her 'Angel'.

Hi Fran!

Actually, I was thinking about that one too, but not from the Angel angle (although I do really like your reasoning). I was thinking it would work because Peter owns a diner - which to me makes food an issue...I'm easy, I know! :D So to answer your question, yes, it works for me!

Fran | 10999 comments Yay! I will go with the diner angle too, I forgot about that! That is a huge part of the storyline.

I also thought about Cai's sugar obsession and all of the pixie stix he ate!

You're ahead of me on the sugar thing...haven't got there yet! :)

Fran | 10999 comments Sorry! It doesn't give anything away for the story luckily :)

I finished it last night- we'll chat about it next week :)

Hi , would a retired police officer doing some investigative work work for white cane safety day?

~KarenH~ | 6903 comments Karen wrote: "Hi , would a retired police officer doing some investigative work work for white cane safety day?"

Yes, that works for me - more for the retired police officer part than the current investigator part (just to clarify for others...I don't think private investigator qualfies).
