SOLVED. 70s/80s YA book with 2 friends who become models [s]

For years I have been remembering scenes from a book I read as a kid, but can't recall the name of the book or the author. It was probably written in the 70s or 80s, but it's possible it was as recent as early 90s. It was about two girls, one black and one white, who were pre-teen or early teen-age and were training to become models or maybe were just taking a modeling class? I remember clearly a make-over scene in which the African-American girl got a short, close-cropped haircut which was described as a "soft cap." The setting *might* have been NY, but I'm not sure.

This is Anastasia's Chosen Career by Lois Lowry. Love it!

YES! I thought it was one of those famous YA authors of that time like Paula Danziger or Lois Lowry, but perusing the names of their books didn't ring any bells. Now I remember loving the Anastasia Krupnik books when I was young! Thank you!! Can't wait to re-read this one (and maybe revisit some other Anastasia books as well!).
