Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 247 comments Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead

Shelf: Vampires
Title: Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Date Finished 10/11/12
Rating: 4 stars

Just last week I told my best friend I was tired of reading vampire books. She agreed and we decided to read some Kristen Ashley books together. While I waited for her to catch up on the ones I already read, I figured I'd read some other stuff. Weeellll, wouldn't you know that Book Shelf Bingo would call the VAMPIRES shelf. After me saying I was tired of vamps. It took a while to find something I wanted to read. I even started another vampire book but just didn't get into it. So I picked up this one. AND HOLY MOLEY! I am super excited I did! This restored my faith in vampires :)

I absolutely loved Rose! She's smart and badass and knows she's hot. She's got this bond with her best friend, who also happens to be a vampire Princess, Lissa. I won't mention how the bond happened, you need to read the book and find out. Rose has fallen for her Guardian trainer, Dimitri and he's keeping his self away from Rose cause his job is being a Guardian to Lissa and he's worried he'd want to protect Rose and not Lissa if they got together. *sigh*

I like that this is from Rose's pov, even though Lissa is the one with the special powers. I'm curious as to what will happen with them. I'm actually looking forward to reading the next one. Yep, that's me, back on the vampire bandwagon ;)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 247 comments Jessica, how did the rest of the week in 3rd grade go? How long do you have left of practicums? I've thought of you all week :)

How's everybody else doing this week? I went to the dr Tuesday. I had a sinus and ear infection. Got meds and a shot :( I feel TONS better now :)

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments Ouchies, that sounds painful Susan, I hate ear infections! Week was so so, just worked. Haven't had much time dedicated to reading lately.

message 208: by Susan (susayq ~) (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 247 comments Ear infections are awful. But truthfully, the sinus stuff was worse this time. I couldn't breathe and my head was hurting so badly from the pressure I didn't do much but sleep for a couple of days. I'm so glad I'm feeling better.

It's homecoming here tonight but I've skipped the game. It rained all morning and I did t feel like sitting in the wet bleachers to watch yhe football team loose LOL and I've seen the half time show more than once since my daughter is in the band. I don't think she'll notice I'm not there...she was more concerned about what she's wearing to the dance after :)

Amy (redheadmommy06) | 67 comments Hey guys I'm here, I think I am going to win the worst team member award. First off City of Fallen Angels was terribly boring and took me forever to get through, then Comcast (our internet/cable provider) said our cables were old and were causing interference and shut down our service for five days before they were able to come out and replace the faulty line. (I thought I was going to die, no internet for me, no nick jr for the kids, it was a mess) Anyways....Posting my review for City of Fallen Angels (ugh it was awful) and I am almost done with Marked (House of night #1) as my Vampire book and will post the review tomorrow (Saturday for me) after my daughter's soccer game or Sunday if I don't get a chance tomorrow. Sorry again, hope you don't all hate me :)

Amy (redheadmommy06) | 67 comments City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare
Shelf: Urban Fantasy
Date Finished: 10/8/12
Rating: 2 1/2 stars

This book was soooo boring till about half way through, then it was still semi boring. It didn't seem to flow the same way as the previous three, then I found out the series was supposed to end after the third one (City of Glass) and it should have. The Angst between Clary and Jace is just annoying at this point. It's always something with them and by the fourth in a series characters need to get their act together. Their love life feels very immature, and it's hard to picture Jace as this awesome sexy strong character when he is constantly running from his problems and acting so whiny. (So he's having bad bad dreams, Talk to Clary about it and get over it) The action and humor was very mild compared to the other three and that is what has always gotten me through the angst in the rest of the books. Simon was the saving Grace, his part was interesting but I still didn't understand why (I'm not sure how to hide spoilers so I will be crypic) a certain "super powerful bad guy" was putting out assassination hits on him when everyone clearly knows he is marked and can't be killed, Idk maybe I missed something there. I would recommend the first three in the series but this one you could take it or leave it, and I should have left it.

Amy (redheadmommy06) | 67 comments Susan--I LOVE the Vampire Academy Series, all the books are just as wonderful as the first...if you stick with them you won't be disappointed. :)

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments Hey Amy, thanks for dropping by and keeping us updated! Internet problems are the worst, I would not able to manage without my backup phone internet. That's sad to hear that City of Fallen Angels wasn't that good, I still have yet to read the 2nd one. Glad your internet is back up now

Amy (redheadmommy06) | 67 comments Yay for stamps, I figured we were waiting on me and felt terrible!! I don't have ANY source of back up internet (tried to use my mom's Ipad by picking up the neighbor's wifi was my last resort and didn't work) It did open my eyes to how dependent on technology my family is, lol. After day three we were used to it, but days one and two were hard. The weather just turned cold here so playing outside wasn't an option the majority of the time.... so we've played a lot of card games since Monday. At the moment I am torn between watching tv non-stop while I'm on the computer because I did miss it so much or keeping it all off still :) No, just kidding I can't live with out the internet, I told the cable guy this morning that he was my new best friend :)~ CoFA wasn't that bad I guess, it was just very juvenile, it should be young-young-adult...or maybe I am just turning into an old lady at the ripe age of 27, who knows.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 247 comments Hey Amy! I did love the first Vampire Academy and I'll end up reading all of them. I've already got them. We have this amazing store called Unclaimed Baggae that sells just that - unclaimed baggage from the airlines. The stock is always changing. They have an amazing section of books and price them cheap. Hardbacks are on $3. I picked up the VA series there over a few months for like $13 total.

Why has it taken me so long to get back to this series? I think this is my favorite so far. Isidore and Simeon demonstrated the old adage of opposites attract to perfection. She tried his patience and his calm with her fiery personality. They had me laughing at their snarky conversations.

If you've read my reviews for the previous books in this series then you know of my love for Jemma, Duchess of Beaumont. She once again shined in this book. As did Villiers. I'm excited that her book is next. I've been waiting for it.

Series Catch-Up Review

Tiger (New Species, #7) by Laurann Dohner

Shelf for Oct14:Series Catch Up(personal shelf)
Book Chosen:Tiger ~ Laurann Dohner
Date Read:Oct 16,2012
Rating:5♥♥♥♥♥
Review:Laurann Dohner has yet again wowed me with this series, I loved every minute of Tiger's story and I'm so glad he got his happy ever after. This book was filled with action, romance, steamy sex and totally hot alpha males. I know I'm never going to go wrong when i pick up a New Species book and this will be a series that i will continue to read for a long time to come, it was fantastic, I even shead a few tears with this one over the pain that one of the secondy characters was going through. Fantastic series you can't go wrong with New Species!!

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 247 comments I've just started Rock Chick (Rock Chick, #1) by Kristen Ashley cause I'm supposed to be reading it with my BFF, but I'm in the mood for Sheikhs and Harlequin romances LOL I'm sure I'll enjoy this, but it's not what I really want to read.

message 234: by Amy (new)

Amy (redheadmommy06) | 67 comments I'm not done with my Vampire book either, but at least mine is good. I am also reading Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11) by Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse #11) as my series catch up. The books got boring and the show has gone from cheesy to terrible, but I figured I would give the series another chance. It's been well over a year since I've read any of the Sookie books and at first I didn't remember anything! lol I should be done with both books by this weekend. I've had certification classes all week for my in home daycare and all I want to do is cuddle up with a blanket and read. I have my last class tomorrow, then I vow to do nothing all weekend but read and go to my daughter's soccer game :) The class tomorrow is going to be the worst, it is a 7 hour class on how to wash your hands properly, change a diaper without spreading germs and how to prepare food without contaminating it. So wish me luck while I spend 7 hours "learning" how to wash my hands, lol

Jeann (Happy Indulgence) (happyindulgence) | 1151 comments Finally finished Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy, #2) by Deborah Harkness
Shelf: Vampires
Rating: ★★
Date Finished: 20/10/12.

Sooooo frustrating! This could have been so much better but was just way too long with lots of waffle that had nothing to do with the storyline. Diana and Matthew don't actually do anything pertaining to their original mission of finding Ashmore or a witch tutor until 50% through!! That's why it took me so long to read.

There were some good parts but very few and far in the between. Will not continue with this series, it's a big waste of time.

My full blog review is here: http://happyindulgence.wordpress.com/...

message 240: by [deleted user] (new)

that's to bad Jeann I now I hate when the first book is always awesome but then the rest of the series just fails to live up it the first, well hopefully we'll get a good shelf called today and you'll get to pick a really good book to read this time :)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 247 comments Kat, It's not as good as some of her other stuff. Indy is very wishy-washy...she has loved Lee since she was 5, she finally gave up on him about 10 years ago (she was 20 then) when he told her he didn't think of her any way except as a sister (she's his sister's best friend). Now, all of a sudden, he wants to be with her and he's loved her all along and Indy is freaking out cause they're moving faster than what she thinks they should. She is very immature and Lee, well, his alpha badassness just doesn't make up for the fact that he really is a jerk. He's read her diary (from teenage years) and "knows" she loves him and she just needs to get over it. Blah, blah, blah. Oh! And let's not forget that she got herself kidnapped at least twice in the book (i'm at 91% and who knows what will happen LOL)

ETA: I have GR friends who say the series does get better. But it's definitely a read in order type thing.

REVIEW

This is a seies that I have been reading for a long time. Even though I didn't rush to read this one, I was looking forward to it. I have to say I was a little disappointed. I loved Merit and Ethan from the first book. Each book was more anticipation for them to finally stop fighting and pushing each other away. There is only so much of that you can put in books before people give up.

In this latest book after the big OMG with Ethan (don't want to ruin for anyone who is not a series fan)I was expecting big things when Merit and Ethan head out on a road trip to catch the witch that almost destroyed Chicago. But now Ethan found another reason to not get together with Merit and of course it was to protect her. Vampire Sentinal anybody???? This made no sense to me. So they are front and center in a fight against angels, who are new to the book.
As much as I love the characters in this book, I felt it was drawn out to give you a wow moment for Ethan and Merit which doesn't happen. Because you wait so long i felt ehh when it does.

Amy (redheadmommy06) | 67 comments Book: Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast
Shelf: Vampires
Date Finished:10-19-12
Rating: 4 Stars

I really liked this book, it was an easy read and even though the main characters are teenagers, they were not frustratingly juvenile. This is book one in the House of Night series and Follows Zoey a human who has been marked (literally, an outline of a half moon was put on her forehead) as a fledgling (vampire in training) and ripped out of her world (which was fine with her) to attend "vampire" school where she goes through 3 years of training and hopefully makes it through the change into an adult vampire.
What I enjoyed about this book (and I've said this before) is when the author has more then just the "usual" Vampire rules. Zoey can go out in sunlight, but it irritates her. And something different is the world is aware of Vampire existence.
Zoey has special abilities and powers given to her by the Vampire God Nyx...but as this is book one in a series I feel that all her secrets were not shared. There is a great love to hate character you just want to punch in the face from the beginning, and the plot is pretty predictable, but I was very entertained the whole way through. I would recommend this book, but if you are looking for an in depth twisty turny plot, difficult read you wont find it with this book.
