Summer on Blossom Street (Blossom Street, #6) by Debbie Macomber Summer on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber

Book Completed: 9/25/2012
Rating: ★★★★
Continue Series?: Yes

Review:
I really really liked this book. It could have easily been a 5 star read for me. Very light and very heart-felt story.

This is a typical Blossom Street story by Debbie Macomber that I always love and like to see what happens next with the different characters in the story.

Lydia is married to Brad and now they are looking into adopting a baby. Shortly after their family is approved to be able to adopt an infant. She is working with a social worker who is in desperate need for a place for a 13-year-old Casey who needs to finish a summer school class in order to continue with her education. Casey is very sullen and reserved and Lydia is finding it hard to get her to be accepted as a temporary child in her home.

Pheobe Rylander is trying to get over her fiance that has been caught by an undercover cop with solicitation. She is looking for a release and a distraction to forget about him. She finds Lydia's Knit to Quit class and finds not only a distraction with the knitting, but a distraction with the attractive Bryan "Hutch" Hutchinson.

Hutch is in the middle of a lawsuit with his chocolate company where a lady is blaming the chocolates for making her fat. He is stressed and has high blood pressure. His dad recently passed away a few years ago due to a heart attack. If he is not careful, his fate may be the same. As a result, his doctor recommended knitting. He joined the Knit to Quit class and is finding relaxation in the knitting and with his new found love relationship with Pheobe.

Alix Turner is looking to quit smoking after taking it up again during all the fuss of her wedding. She needs to quit in order to become pregnant and have a child. As a result, she started the knitting class in order to help get with people who also want to quit other habits.

Anne Marie Roche is happy with her adopted child Ellen. However after returning home from her two week trip in Paris, it appears that Ellen's dad has found her is looking to reconnect with his daughter. He may not even be her father considering Ellen does not have anyone listed on her birth certificate. However Anne Marie is unsure of the best way to put it into effect.

I loved this story and everything about it. I wasn't entirely found of Anne Marie's or Alix's stories. These two stories are the only ones that brought it down to a 4 star rating. However I thought everything was very heart-felt and loving and made me a little more happy inside. I can't wait to read the last book in the series, A Turn in the Road. As I have finished every other book in the series. I am looking forward to see what happens next.

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Mandy, your review reminds me that I need to get caught up on that series myself. I'm up to Living with the Dead (Women of the Otherworld, #9) by Kelley Armstrong , and I just haven't been able to motivate myself to start it because the main character is someone we haven't met before in the series. Maybe I'll try to fit it into some October challenges. That'll force me to read it. :)

Persuasion by Jane Austen
Persuasion by Jane Austen
Shelf: Favorite Author
Read: 9/27/12
Rating: ★★★★

Review:

Persuasion is a different book from what Austen has us accustomed to. I knew this coming into it from the synopsis alone: A re-encounter, many years later, of lovers separated by her being persuaded that a marriage would be imprudent.

It makes for a more contained, more reined in story. There is a measure of the unknown and anticipation of romance, but the meat is in the disconcerting and sad aspect of closeness interrupted that makes beloved virtual strangers, in the uncertainty of stand, and misunderstandings aggravated by time and distance. The whole book feels sad. Anne's family situation, the surrounding coldness, and the only warmth coming from the same source that dealt so much well meant pain.

For an extra shade of pain, you only need to know a bit about Austen's life beforehand.

I felt like crying at points, and was almost convinced that, as out of mode as it would be, the story would end badly. The sudden change of style and gears some 15 pages before the end seem to support it. I could even say that the top of the novel for me was Anne's talk with captain Harville, but that even as it gave foot for a happy ending, it could just have been the single shining ray giving contrast to all the ideas about unrealized love that the book deals with.

I enjoyed it even as I was pained by it, and was glad for the cheery end, even if I didn't quite believe as much as all the rest. Maybe because that's the part that Jane didn't get to live.

Barbara ★ Born To Be Wild by Catherine Coulter

Shelf: Favorite Author
Read: September 26, 2012
Rating: ★★★★

There's a lot going on in this book - three separate (well, semi-separate) story lines. First of all, in Malibu, California, someone is trying to kill Mary Lisa Beverly. Secondly, in her home town (Goodard, Oregon), her mother's best friends son-in-law has been murdered and police chief Jack Wolf is investigating. (Jack is her old nemesis.) And lastly, Mary Lisa is an actress and the soap opera she stars in plays an important role with the whole stalker thing. Her two best friends, makeup artist, Lou Lou and TV newscaster, Elizabeth also have ongoing romantic interests.

This is chick lit, romantic suspense, a legal thriller, a murder mystery and a family drama. What more could you ask for?

Glad and saddened by this book.
After not even being able to make it through this last season of True Blood I was glad to be reminded why I fell in love with this series.I love the book characters and the writing style. But sad that the book ended where it did. I hate cliffhangers. This one lost the book a whole star.

Review
Katsa is part of a secret Council that is out to do some good in the world. However she is also her uncle's little pet to send out and do his bidding whether it should be right or wrong. She has rescued the Lienid grandfather and comes to meet his grandson , Po, in the process who is Graced. Katsa who is a Graced fighter learns to work with him and practices with him as her first and only person that gives her any competition. While investigating why Po's grandfather was kidnapped to begin with they set out on a journey to find the culprit and save possibly more than Po's grandfather.

Katsa is a great character. She is such a strong female character that is what you want in your everyday life. She is someone that I would love as a friend and I actually have a friend that is somewhat similar to her. Katsa is still looking for herself in the book. Po is exactly my kind of guy. He has his own tough characteristics, but he admits when he is at the weaker hand. He is not willing to hold Katsa back from being herself and growing as a person. Bitterblue is amazing for her age. However I thought they could have made her a little older to be a little more believable, but hey you win some and you lose some.

The only thing that brought this book down was the fact that it was not enough action and adventure for my liking. It was what I was looking forward too. There was the working the way through the forest and moving on to the next task or destination. However I wanted to see more of what had actually happened. I wanted to see more of the fights in my head.

Steph Ann | 1220 comments City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare

Shelf: Urban Fantasy
Date Read: 10/2/12
Rating: 3.5 stars

Review:

I'm not always the biggest YA fan, so I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this one, but added it to my TBR list anyway for whenever I was in the mood for YA. I ended up enjoying it, although there were some things I didn't like, which is how I ended up at 3.5 stars.

I'll start off with the good. I thought the story was very well paced. There weren't really any places where I felt like the story lagged, and I was always interested in what was going on. I also really liked Clary as a main character. I thought her reactions to various situations were believable and her behavior was on par with how I feel a 15 year old would act.

I'm not quite sure what to think of Jace. There were times he'd make me laugh and smile, and I'd start to like him, and then he'd do something that just made me want to smack him. I found myself really rooting for Simon in the love triangle that's going on, and I'm not sure whether that's what the author intended or not.

One little nitpicky issue I had was that at about the halfway point in the book, there are a couple pages from Jace's point of view. To this point, everything has been from Clary's point of view, other than a brief scene at the beginning of the book. It was just really jarring to all of a sudden have Jace's point of view for only a few pages, and it kind of took me out of the story briefly, if that makes any sense at all.

All that being said, I will be reading the 2nd book in the series, as I'm very curious to see where things go from here, especially with a certain twist that occurred towards the end of the book.

Mackenzie grew up in Hemlock with her best friend Amy. Life was anything but easy with the increase in cases of Lupine Syndrome the werewolf virus. Mackenzie's best friend is murdered by a werewolf yet her kill runs free. A team of Trackers comes to town to find the werewolf who killed Amy. The Trackers take those away and lock them in a caged facility for the rest of their lives if they have Lupine syndrome because they are unpredictable and it's not safe for the humans.

Mackenzie is haunted by Amy she sees her in her dreams so she decides the best thing to do is find Amy's killer to put the dreams to rest. Mackenzie learns a lot more than she ever expected on her quest to find her best friends killer. That the people she thought she knew aren't who she thought they were. The more she and her friends uncover about Amy the more twisted it gets, testing all of them to the brink. She will need to learn who she can trust, as well as do what it takes to protect those she loves even if it isn’t the best choice.

I loved Hemlock, but I am a huge shape shifter fan so maybe I'm a little biased. Hemlock takes an interesting twist instead of being a deep dark secret the werewolves are ousted by the government creating a unique story. I found Hemlock captivating it sucked me in right from the start and I didn't want to put it down. I love all the action and mystery woven into the book it creates a great story very intense yet with a lot of feeling. Mackenzie is such a great character she grows so much in the first book, the more she learns about the werewolves and the truth about Amy's murder. The book is well written it gives you everything you need, a great ending but gives you enough you want the next book. Overall one of the better werewolf books I've read but it's not like your typical werewolf book so it stands alone.

I wasn't really a big fan of Gemma. If it wern't for a challenge I wouldn't have made it through my second attempt at this book.

Gemma seemed like a spoiled brat with the, "I'm 16 and I know so much more than any adult". She repeatedly did things she had been told not to. There were lots of plot lines about how horrible it was to be a woman before womans rights. But thier solution to get out of these situations was flat out depressing.

I am much more impressed by a badly written happy story than a really well written depressing story.

Review:

I absolutely loved this book. It's sacrilegious, irreverent and totally hilarious. This is basically a story of an angel and a demon, mortal enemies who become friends just by proximity. They've been hanging around Earth (well England actually) for centuries, just waiting for the apocalypse, that they have become friends and allies. They love life on Earth and don't want armageddon and therefore do whatever they can to sabotage it without blatantly doing anything against their morals. The cast of characters is huge and actually takes up 2 full pages in the beginning of the book. Quite a few of them appear only once to move along either Aziraphale's (the angel) story or Crowley's (the demon).

It's rather surprising that I liked this since I'm anti-religion and I read one book by Terry Pratchett and one by Neil Gaiman and greatly disliked both of them. This was just a totally zany adventure with a kooky cast of characters. I listened to the audiobook which had a fabulous narrator. I'm not sure if I would have actually been able to read this book but listening to someone else's interpretation was amazing!
