SHELF Fav Author:The Lunatic Cafe Laurell K. Hamilton
The Lunatic Cafe (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #4) by Laurell K. Hamilton

I've decided to see the series to the end, however long it takes me, which might be a long time if what I hear about the later books is true. But a little pain can be fun now and then.

Lauren (laurenjberman) I will read The Darkest Seduction (Lords of the Underworld, #9) by Gena Showalter for the favorite author shelf.

@Tiffanie - no pain, no gain?

For the new bookshelf, "Favorite Author", I'm going to go with Ilona Andrews (LOVE Kate Daniels!) "Gunmetal Magic". Very anxious to read this one!! :) Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews

Book: The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells The Mage in Black (Sabina Kane, #2) by Jaye Wells
Date Finished: September 23rd
Rating: ★★★★
Review:

Another great read in the world of Sabina Kane! I couldn't wait to read this book as I just finished the first. While, I loved the first, I loved this one even more. Sabina is not feeling as sorry for herself anymore.... she is finding she has people that love and care for her. I loved the new characters.. loved her sister, Slade, and I especially loved the werewolf Michael. I think he's a good, respectable guy. I can't wait to read more about him as I'm sure he will be in books to come. As for who the bad "guy" was in this one... I saw it coming but I thought she was working for someone else... someone I am still not convinced is innocent so we shall see. (Sorry I'm speaking vaguely but I don't want to give anything away to those who haven't read it yet that might want to... you should if you haven't! ;-)) I absolutely love the subtle humor in these books... they have me laughing out loud all the time. This books ends with a huge cliff hanger.... and now I can't wait to read the next one!

booklovinrn | 106 comments Shelf : Kick-Ass Heroine
Read : Born of Silence by Sherrilyn Kenyon ★★★★★
Date Finished : September 22, 2012

I am a huge fan Of Sherrilyn Kenyon, have read just about everything she has published and love The Dark Hunters. But by far The League Series is my favorite.

I have had Born of Silence on my list and on my Nook for awhile now and I have no idea why I hadn't read it yet. Ever since I first read his name I have been intrigued by Darling Cruel.

Darling Cruel lives a double life. To most of the Ichidian universe Darling is thought of as a weak gay noble with a feeble mind but that is far from the truth. As Kere, a founding member of the rogue Sentella organization, he has honed his mental and physical skills.

Zarya Starska grew up a royal but was thrust out when her father was betrayed by Darling’s Uncle. Now, Zarya is leader of the resistance, fighting the royal government against its mistreatment of the people.

Darling and Zarya have been engaging a super-secret affair for two years, but he's been doing it as his alter-ego Kere. She has never even seen his face but their love is real and they plan to get married. When it looks as if they might start a life together and she might see the real Kere, he disappears.

Darling Cruel is captured by the Resistance. When his uncle refuses to pay ransom, the Resistance turns to torture and abuse the like of which I’ve only read once before (in Kenyon’s book Acheron). Zarya is the leader of the Resistance and is so consumed with trying to discover why her lover Kere has vanished that she pays little attention to their royal prisoner and assumes that they’ve let him go. Unknowing that her fighters continue to torture and abuse him for months, taking out all of their hatred and frustrations against the ruling class on him. Darling thinks Zarya is aware of and does not care about the abuse he is enduring. As the torture continues, love turns to hate. The Sentella eventually, finds and frees him, capturing Zarya and turning her over to slavers as a punishment. Darling has become a monster, consumed with hatred, and wreaks vengeance on his enemies. His wrath is almost as horrific as the abuse he has suffered. Just as everyone think he’s gone too far and his own people are going to assassinate him, his best friend Maris finds Zarya and brings her back to Darling in hopes to calm the beast. Zarya and Darling are left to try to rediscover themselves as well as their love for each other in the midst of public disdain, political unrest, assassination attempts, and facing off with The League itself.

This was, by no means, an easy book to read. The storyline dealt with prejudices and abuse that would have pushed a weaker person over the edge well before it did Darling. An absolutely fabulous read. It won't be easy to get through, but the journey Sherrilyn Kenyon takes the reader on is well worth it.

Great review Cathy. I love Kenyon's Dark Hunters and am intrigued by this series as well. I'm not such a huge fan of sci-fi and was wondering if there are a lot of futuristic elements in the League.

booklovinrn | 106 comments Lauren,

I am not a fan of sci-fi at all. I am more of a paranormal and urban fantasy lover myself. The League series is set in a different universe and there are some sci-fi elements....like blasters and fighter ships, etc. But I am so drawn into the stories that Sherrilyn Kenyon is telling that I don't really notice it. I highly recommend this series. Like I said I have always been a Dark Hunter Minion but The League is by far my favorite series. I don't do alot of rereads but The League is definitely on my reread list.

The Lunatic Cafe (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #4) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Book 4 in the Anita Blake Series:

Anita Blake....My vampire hunter, zombie raiser, missing shifter tracker, judo fighting, gun toting and knife carrying bad ass.

Caught between the werewolf she loves and the vampires she loves to hate, Anita has once again been drawn into another prenatural murder case where nothing is what it seems. Throw in there a jealous ex-lover and sparks start to fly or I should say blood starts to spill.

So far I liked the book the best. It was refreshing to see her trying to accept Richard for who he was while coping with her bias that “all monsters are bad”.

Can she ever truly love Richard????

Will she give in to her darker urges for Jean-Claude????

Will she ever punch her jerk boss in the nose????

Lauren (laurenjberman) Just Like Heaven (Smythe-Smith Quartet #1) by Julia Quinn

Book: Just Like Heaven by Julia Quinn
Shelf: Favorie Author
Finished: September 25
4.5 Stars

Review: The Smythe-Smith series is a spin off of the Bridgetons. The tone, banter and romance are all reminiscent of the original books and on the whole the characters and story are captivating, although there are a couple of small issues.

To begin with, Just Like Heaven overlaps with Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which is fun as we get cameo appearances by Gregory and Colin as well as Lady Danbury (that woman is a scream). However, there is one glaring error in the timeline that may annoy some readers but didn't really bother me as it only becomes evident once the book is almost over - (view spoiler).

Second, Marcus and Honoria have a sweet and enjoyable romance, however, their chemistry, while there, does not build sufficiently and their one steamy scene leaves much to be desired.

That said, they are an engaging couple and their friends to lovers romance is charming and entertaining. Marcus is shy and finds it difficult to interact with others. His social awkwardness is concealed behind a dark and brooding facade but Honoria, who has known him most of her life, sees beneath his cool exterior to the lonely man in need of love and friendship. It is wonderful how comfortable they are with each other at a time when men and women were basically strangers when they married.

In sum, this book is laugh-out-loud funny. The antics and banter between the quartet members is delightful and had me giggling well into the night. Do not be surprised if you find yourself finishing this lovely, lively and angst free read in less than a day.

Book: Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews

Review: Ilona Andrews never disappoints me. I LOVED Gunmetal Magic. I was really glad we were able to see the history behind Andrea. What exactly happened to her to make her the way she is. I'm so glad she was able to accept who she is and is working on dealing with it. I LOVED that she finally gave in to Aunt B and to Raphel...and on her own terms; the end was sooo very sweet! I was also very happy to see such a rather large showing from Kate. Usually in these cases you may see a small cameo but there were a few large scenes that involved Kate (as well as some others!) - loved it. What a great read!! :)

Read : One Summer by JoAnn Ross ★★★★
Date Finished : September 24, 2012

JoAnn Ross is one of my favorite authors for when I want an easy afternoon read that will make me both laugh and cry. One Summer did not disappoint. This is the second book set in the small coastal Oregon town of Shelter Bay. The book is about two vets, one of the animal variety (Charity) and one of the Marine variety(Gabriel). Gabriel and Charity, an abandoned dog, a couple of orphans, a small town and the people in it. A crusty hero with a squishy marshmallow center, and a competent, smart, sexy heroine. What more can you ask for?

Favorite Author Shelf: Ashes of Honor (October Daye, #6) by Seanan McGuire
Date Finished: September 28th
Rating: ★★★★★
Review:

I absolutely loved this book. It was such a rebuilding for October and I adore the person (or fae) she has become.

October is searching for Etienne's changeling daughter and finds herself pulled into the intrigue at the Court of Cats.

The search for Chelsea was really interesting and mirrored Toby's search for her own daughter, Gillian. It forced her to face her own issues and deal with her grief.

Tybalt and Toby's interactions were amazing in this book. As nice as Connor was, I never really felt like he belonged with Toby. Tybalt is the perfect match for Toby and I can't wait to see how their relationship develops. The Court of Cats is always dangerous and this outing was no different. Raj's appearances are enjoyable each time. I loved seeing him grow closer to Tybalt and I hope Toby does take him on as an official squire.

The Toby Daye series has gotten better and better with each book and I can't wait to see how amazing the next book will be.

Read: The Kingmakers by Clay Griffith
Shelf: Favorite Author
Date: 9/29/2012
Pages: 392
Rating: ★★★★✩

Review: Great conclusion to the vampire empire trilogy. All has been leading up to this final epic battle of Vampire vs Humans. In the Griffith's steampunkish universe, vampires are evil creatures who treat the humans as cattle and refer to them as food herds. Adele is now the leader of her people and must continue to battle the clans as they are becoming evermore dangerous as they become more aggressive as Prince Ceasar organizes clans and plans to become the king of all vampires. Very political tale with both groups setting up allies, guarding against betrayal and traitors. Packed full of action and the climatic ending didn't disappoint. Does love really conquer and survive it all?
