JAK is my all-time favorite author. We've been doing a re-reading of the Arcane series over at Romance Readers Reading Challenges group, although I think I'm behind by one right now. It is been interesting to read the books closer together and see the threads between more clearly.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I finished my Favorite Author book today (10/3) and gave it 3 and 1/2 stars.

Review:
Really 3 and 1/2 stars, especially with the short story included which takes place at the same time as the main story. I like Andrea and really felt for her pain, especially when (view spoiler), but I only gave 4 stars to the last Kate Daniels book and this one wasn't as good as that. If they continue the World of Kate Daniels series, I hope Roman gets his own story as I'd like to know more about him (got to love the Eeyore pjs) and he deserves someone special.

As for the main story, Raphael comes across as a spoiled jerk for the first half or so. I enjoyed Andrea's banter with Roman and Ascanio. The mystery was interesting and it was complete. The wrap-up was at warp speed and I would have liked a little more detail there.

The short story took place at the same time as the main, but starred Kate and Curran. I loved how they were so protective of a boy they just met. I also enjoyed just seeing them be together. As much as I like Andrea and Raphael, I think I enjoyed this story more.

Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews

Lina Just in time before tomorrow's new shelf gets called, here's my review for this week:

Shelf: URBAN FANTASY

Book: Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill
Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires, #1) by Chloe Neill

Rating: ★★★★★
Finished: 6-Oct-12
Review: Sometimes you fall upon a book at exactly the right time. You find yourself in the perfect frame of mind to read the next book on your TBR pile.

That's what's happened to me with this book. It had it's flaws, but overall, I have loved this story. Enough that my first thought when I finished the last page was to check if I already had the next one in the series. This was different enough, in a recent slew of paranormal romances, and interesting enough, to keep me reading, to keep me curious about the multi-faceted characters. I enjoyed Merit's wit, but also her ability to analyze. This is a smart heroine, even when she's in a completely new situation she is trying to figure out all sides of the box, and find the appropriate response.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the subsequent books can keep me as enthralled.

Lina I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did, Kate, so was really glad this challenge gave me the push to read it.

Smokeless Fire (Fire Spirits, #1) by Samantha Young
Finished 10/6/2012 Rating: 4 stars

The more and more I read of this author the more I like her. The middle part of this book was a tad slow for me, although that could be because I got sick for almost a week and didn't want to do anything but sleep, and even when I got better I still just wanted to sleep so I was reading it in super small chunks, but on the whole I really enjoyed it, and look forward to the rest of the series. This is the second book I've read with a Jinn theme (the first being a more lighthearted book), and I liked that this one took a darker tone, although still had some comedy throughout, but it kind of makes me want to search for more Jinn books, they don't seem as popular as say vampires or werewolves.

Heather (Heatso) (hyperweather) | 68 comments New week is Vampires!

I'm not sure what I'm going to read yet, I was kind of hoping I could fit Borrowed Ember in, since I've changed my urban-fantasy book to Scorched Skies, and know I'm going to want to read the next one immediately!

message 158: by Lina (new)

Lina I'm tossing up between Lover Revealed, which I need to get back to, and Friday Night Bites, to continue the new series from last week :-)

Yep, I have up through book 1 in the light dragon series and I need to catch up on that sometime soon. I think my all-time favorite book by her is a contemporary romance - The Corset Diaries by Katie MacAlister .

You all have picked some good vampire books.

I've read all of Katie MacAlister's dragon books to Book 2 of the Light Dragons, which I have sitting on my self waiting to be read. I haven't checked out any of her others, but I've been meaning to forever. Maybe I need to do some TBR rearranging like Cathy. Guess I'll need to go gas up the forklift. :-P

Lina Shelf: VAMPIRES

Book: Lover Revealed by J.R. Ward
Lover Revealed (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #4) by J.R. Ward

Rating: ★★★★
Finished: 11-Oct-12
Review:
I've been wanting to get to this book, wondering how things would go for Butch and Marissa, both with their own insecurities, and a serious lack of communication. It was great for me to return to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but there were a couple of things that I really disliked. The first was Marissa's attitude towards Butch's purpose in the Brotherhood, I felt it was completely inconsistent with the way she'd been groomed to be Wrath's mate. She should have expected a warrior male, and so her issues with Butch fighting made no sense to me. The second thing that annoyed me was the allusion to an attraction between Butch and V, but nothing stated outright? Was that part of the deeper bond, or did I misunderstand... All in all, a fantastic read though.

Book: The Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong
The Reckoning (Darkest Powers, #3) by Kelley Armstrong
Rating:★★★★★
Finished: 11th October 2012
Review:
The troubled teens are still on the run from the sinister Edison Group; Chloe’s necromancy skills are getting stronger and stronger, Tori is able to perform magic that witches many times her age can’t achieve without incantations and Derek’s changes are getting more intense and more frequent. Add her romantic entanglement with both Simon AND Derek – things couldn’t get much more complicated for Chloe Saunders.

After holding up at a safe house but not feeling all that safe at the moment, Chloe has to cope with an evil teenage ghost haunting the house and a necromancer mentor who doesn’t believe Chloe’s skills. Along with the threat of the Edison Group hanging over them, the teens grow more and more suspicious of anyone and everyone until… at last – one way or another – they get to the bottom of the Lyle House mystery…

I’m always anxious when I get to the last book in a series/trilogy that I’m enjoying. I want to know just how it’s going to end but at the same time I don’t want to have to leave the characters.

Chloe has grown so much since the first book. Her powers are developing experientially and she’s come a long way from the stuttering fearful girl into the woman who overcomes her fears when it comes to protecting the ones she loves.

The other characters are great in their own ways too – I’m not sure after the first book I ever thought I could like Tori but she’s grown on me and I’m glad that the others accepted her into their merry crew of adolescent misfits.

I loved the amount of action that occurs throughout this book. There’s evil angry ghosts, get away plans, werewolves and so much more. This was a fantastic instalment in the trilogy however – I didn’t love the ending. Or rather, I didn’t like that the trilogy was ending. There’s so much more I want to know. But I did love how all the drama came to climax and the resulting resolution was fitting to the series.

We can now get our stamp for that shelf.
And I'm finished with my Free Space book too and will get the review up in a short while :) I'm on a bit of a roll at the moment :P

Heather (Heatso) (hyperweather) | 68 comments Scorched Skies (Fire Spirits #2) by Samantha Young

Urban Fantasy - 4 1/2 stars finished 10/12/12

I liked this one more then the first, I didn't find it to have any slow parts, I even read the first 60% in one sitting immediately after finishing the first one. I wish it hadn't changed narrators so often, but majority of the book was 1 narrator so I guess it wasn't to big of a deal, and it was necessary, I just get annoyed when I'm into a part and it changes for a minute haha I'm impatient. I can't wait until a shelf is called where I can fit the 3rd book in :P

Alyssa (lyssad87) | 974 comments I finished Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) by Faith Hunter for the Urban Fantasy shelf on 10/12/12.

Rating: ★★★★

Review: I liked it. It wasn't amazing, but it definitely held my interest.

I was pretty interested in all skinwalker stuff. The only things I really know about skinwalkers is from the Mercy books. All the new info in the book was pretty cool.

Jane is bad-ass. I liked her. Beast was cool too, and another bad-ass.

The jury's still out for me on a bunch of the other characters, like Rick and Leo. Very suspicious....

I'll be continuing with the series as the books become available to me.

I really enjoyed this book - I can see myself really getting into the rest of the series.
The characters are interesting and I loved the tension between Ethan and Merit.
Catcher was the stand out character for me (aside from Merit) but I also liked the friendship between Mal and Merit.
The world of the Vampires and other things was really interesting and I found it fascinating how the Houses worked.

Cathy Galloway | 140 comments Here is my review for the vampire shelf.

Book: Sex and the Single Vampire by Katie MacAlister

Rating: 4 Stars
Completed: 10/13/12
Review: This was a cute fun read. Some of the emotional stuff was too over-done or changes too quickly to be realistic, but a book about vampires searching for their "Beloved" isn't supposed to be realistic. MacAlister writes with a quirky sense of humor that I enjoy.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I finished my vampire shelf book (10/14) and gave it 4 stars.

review:
Well after the shocking ending of the previous book, this one takes things even further than you would expect and it is nice to see a series going outside the norm. Crazy things are happening in Chicago and Merit and Jonah need to find out who is responsible as the vampires are being blamed by the humans. Plus Merit has to deal with the GP representative making extremely stupid rules for the house. The end brings some really good news and some really bad news for Merit personally.

The Darkest Passion (Lords of the Underworld, #5) by Gena Showalter
Rating:★★★
Date: 15 October 2012
Review:
This was a good addition to the Lords of the Underworld series. I like the characters and the relationships between the characters but I did feel like this book felt a lot like the previous ones in the series.

I didn't understand all that was happening at first - I have since found out that some details that are relatively important to the series as a whole were in an anthology. I HATE when they do that... I'm not a fan of anthologies especially when they put pertinent series information in them.

I liked the romance between Aeron and Olivia. It was hot and they made sense to me as a couple.

I'm not in a rush to get back to the rest of the series but it was nice to revisit the warriors.
