I read Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews
Finished:10/8/12
Rating: ★★★★★
Here's my review:
4.75 This one was much better than the first. I read the first about a year ago and was a little put off by the heavy world building. In this one though it was just second nature. Kate really is funny and such a kick ass heroine. In this one a coven of witches has gone missing, Kate has taken ward of one their daughters, a strange bowman keeps popping up in Kate's life, and some serious crap is fixing to go down. Magic keeps flaring and odd creatures are out hunting Kate and the child Julie. Curran begins to show interest in Kate and as usual she manages to make him mad. A lot of my friends have said not to judge this series by the first book and I must agree!

I loved this book! It left me craving for the third! Sophie is one strong girl even though her life keeps getting flipped upside down. Her life is a web of crazy! Her dad steps into her life after all those years of not being there. She finds out that she is betrothed to Cal and yet her heart belongs to the one boy who is on the wrong side of the tracks so to speak. Archer can't pretend to keep pretending that he doesn't love Sophie anymore, and Sophie can't seem to stay away. Her best friend Jenna faces an important decision. Daisy and Nick have gone insane, (Literally) and people who Sophie thought she trusted turned out to be the ones who made Daisy and Nick into the scary demons that have gone feral! Great book! Kept me guessing until the very end!
Sophie has a lot ahead of her, the question is what?

I just don't think it takes a lot of worldbuilding or imagination for modern day writers to come up with clockwork/steampunk/Victorian versions of internet, cell phones, cars, etc.
It's not the only genre, of course, currently adding vampires or other paranormal stuff to make sales (some are really bad where you can almost mentally edit to read the original non-paranormal book by removing some paragraphs and sentences). I just don't care for it between the lack of imagination for the machinery/world and the way it usually hits one of two things I don't like. Either, except for the usually overly kickass heroine, the other females are what you typically find in Victorian era books (usually either oppressed servant class or restricted, fainthearted useless courtiers). Or it's some never-been-to-England and did-not-bother-to-research author oozing every anglophile British slang or idea that the chick lit genre or BBCAmerica perpetuated.

Shelf: Vampires
Completed: 12/10/12

Honoria and her younger brother and sister are hiding out in Whitechapel, after fleeing from the Blue Bloods who have killed their father. Whitechapel is the rougher part of town, and is the only area not ruled by the Echelon, but by a rogue Blue Blood: Blade. In order to get his protection, Honoria agrees to make a deal with him, but both their pasts catch up with them and they have to decide if they can trust each other.
I really enjoyed this book. Blade was an interesting, dark, brooding and sexy guy. Honoria, though she had her annoying moments, a likable heroine and the take on vampires was quite unique. The world itself was enjoyable and not overly filled with gadget talk for a steampunk novel, which I really liked.

Here's my review.

I'm going with "It was ok.". I usually have an easier time liking the hero than I have liking the heroine. This book was different. Jaz's voice, her snarkasm was the thing that got me to actually finish the damn thing. I don't like the spy angle and the action was a bit boring. And the hero was way too suave. I don't know, I guess I like my monsters are bit more scary. All these modern vampires adapting to society aren't doing it for me :-)
Short one this time. I don't want to go into a rant.

Haha. Blimey, crikey, mate, bloody hell, etc. I know. Some of them need to research more.

Series Catch-up
Lethal Outlook by Victoria Laurie
Finished: October 13, 2012
Rating: ★★★★✩
Number of pages: 353
Review: This series is part fluffly, cozy mystery with a paranormal twist of psychic ability. I'm a little surprised to still be enjoying ten books into the series; but, it was an enjoyable read. Abby still recovering from injuries sustained in book nine; her and Candace still partners; both couples settled in Austin, still consulting with FBI; and another mystery not quite clued into towards the end (balanced with some clues that were there along the way— something usually missing from cozy mystery genre and why usually a turn off for me). Feared whine-y crap over injuries and PT or overdose of sister Cat wedding planning would overtake usual story based on glimpses of other reviews—unnecessarily so as did not happen.
A bit more of, well anyone other than just Abby, like Dutch, Eggy, etc. might have gotten it another fraction of a star and made me debate a 5-star rating; but, then again, compared to what I consider a 5-star book, likely not. Supporting cast kinda cardboards of themselves. Really just a quick, enjoyable read with a likable main character if not usually an HEA for anyone else (it's a cozy mystery so, yup, some fatalities). Really can't believe still reading and liking 10 books in with an author on some of the author-behaving-badly lists (saw after hooked on series). Still not quite plausible to me how when she moved all the friends, business partners, etc. all conveniently moved with her and they did have brief cameos here (but that was a lost star in an earlier book and was past history for this one) except for the parents.

Yup, once a few 4-in-a-row show up...

Will post review as soon as I've had
1- more then 5hrs sleep for the last 2 days going on day 3.
2- after work this evening too.(day is going to drag)
3- when I've had anough time to proces what's been read this weekend

and still have yet to finish

How is the vamp book so far? (Another series that keeps getting recommended to me that I keep resisting because of the steampunk aspect.)
And, how are you doing?

10/15/12 series catch-up
I have not been able to do anything for the past three days because of this trilogy. Im currently half way through the third and final book and I am dreading the end. These are a must!!!Sorry kids....mommy will be back in a few days
I can see why this book is doing so well. 99% of the readers are married women with children. We all know our lives are busy and hectic. There is nothing wrong with grabbing your favorite drink, putting on your snuggly PJ's and getting lost in the erotic world of Christian Grey. We are not talking about rocket science here, nor does it take a literary genius to write this stuff. These series of books are simply fun and very arousing. A pleasurable escape from the stress of everyday life. I am sure there are tons of husbands out there that will be thanking the author for putting a little spark in the bedroom after their wives read these books. I personally could not put them down. I know I am not alone when I say- I hope a 4th book is in the works
