If you have non-melting icepack/patch things you would freeze and apply to body injuries, place close to but not on computer and definitely not blocking air vents. Anything looking like a vent should be a few inches clear of anything even with non-working fan. Weird lights on an older power surge strip could mean it has given up the ghost and needs replacing or needs its reset button hit (another heat problem). With dead fan, more attention to keeping dust free a really good idea because will be easier to clog up now (I like the little sewing machine brushes and micro sized vac attachments for regular vacuums sold lots of places under $10 rather than the wimpy and pricey little computer vacuums). unused printers or other plugged in devices should be off if not in use to also reduce heat and other interference—ack, occupational hazard to offfer advice unasked.

For displaying and for creating, not a problem (the ones used on goodreads or other "unicode" displaying sites/browsers in particular carry over perfectly).

It's been awhile for me on Mac stuff; but the unicode, ASCII, and ANSI character sets and the HTML programming is universal. Not just PC, Android, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, etc. nor just English language. On some OS system keyboards/devices, holding a key down might get a popup showing alternate characters without having to figure out the HTML codes. But can always use.

It is possible to change some video settings (particularly in older Internet Explorer browsers) to where you don't see unicode characters -- but something you would have had to have done deliberately and not standard.

Shelf: Free Space (group-bookshelf)
Completed: 22/9/12
Rating: ★★★★★

Another fantastic novel in the IAD series, and one that gave me my much needed lykae fix.
This is the story of Lucia, the huntress and Garreth MacRieve, prince of the lykae clan. I've been waiting for their story ever since we saw the first hints of their connection in "A Hunger Like No Other", and it hasn't disappointed. It's a funny, sexy and exciting read, including an adventure in the Amazon, evil gods and of course Lucia and Garreth's romance.
Garreth has his hands full to convince his mate that he's the one for her, as Lucia has kept up her chastity for over a millennium in exchange for her unsurpassed archery skills. She needs those in order to kill an ancient god, with whom she has a long history. But of course the sexy and determined lykae won't give up without a fight.
Towards the end of the book, a major plotline for the upcoming books is set up, that makes me want to delve in straight away.

A few keyboard differences to learn on the mac (including some alt and ctrl key stuff under "option" key)...but all works. Scroll to bottom table/chart at http://www.nouilles.info/keyboard_sho... to see keyboard tips for characters.

Missed his Lexington booksigning for The Blinding Knife tonight because had already committed to wine tasting dinner with friends before I knew about. Backup plan for this book if gets too complex or slow that I was planning to savor is Earth Unaware by Orson Scott Card or next Kitty Norville or Night Huntress book. A good wine tasting so now in Kroger parking lot with munchies...hubby fnished final paper for doctorate this evening which has put off our regular grocery shopping so life is back to the mundane.

The Night Angel books made me a fan of the author; not books where the storyline or character summaries do justice...just really good fantasy that takes some of the usual elements but works them into a unique book with a very distinctive main character. No group of multi-racial heroes running endlessly around author's imagined map type of fantasy. Some really interesting twists; don't get put off by the fact characters were youngish in the opening; they grow up quick.

I also read On The Edge. I liked it even if not necessarily the most amazing book ever read, some originality to the worldbuilding and some formulaic, an air of "snow queen" and all those slavic or Black Forest tales in my opinion. I read because so many raves about the series; plan on reading more in series but so likely to be on BINGO shelves waiting for a "fit."

If anyone has not bought yet, check for omnibus or bundled deals. I know I got "The Night Angel Trilogy" for the kindle versus buying each book seperate.

God Save the Queen (The Immortal Empire, #1) by Kate Locke

“God save the Queen”, the first installment in the Immortal Empire starts off with a bang and doesn’t let up. First sentence: “I hate goblins.” Having never read a book about goblins and having shunned the more shall we say disfigured creatures of the paranormal world for suave vamps and ferocious wolves I now wonder why. Why not goblins. The pace Kate Locke sets is incredible. No sentence feels like a filler and the action and dialogue draws you in from the start. I absolutely adore the voice she gives her heroine. I now have so many of her quotes highlighted on my kindle :-)

I love the world building, the idea that the world is separated into the aristocracy made up of vampires and werewolves, the humans who fear them, but outnumber them, the goblins who play a crucial role in this story, which I’m not giving away, and the halvsies, the mixed-bloods. Our heroine Alexandra Vardan would have been very comfortable on the kick-ass shelf. In addition to the tough and snarcastic Xandra we have one very very ferocious werewolf. “Vex” MacLaughlin in addition to his name has all the characteristics a wolf should have. The supporting characters are also very well rounded and play crucial roles in Alexandra’s life.

I cannot believe I only read steampunk once before. I neglected a whole genre.

Shelf: Favourite Author
Read: 26/9/2012

This was my favourite book of the series so far and concentrates on Clay and his mate Talin. The two have known each other since childhood, but a horrific incident has torn them apart and left Clay thinking she was dead. Now, many years later Talin contacts Clay, as she needs his help in finding out what happened to some missing street kids, she used to work with.

This is the first time we have a human mate instead of a psy, which was refreshing and I have to admit I actually enjoyed it a lot more. I think I got a little bit bored with the rather repetitive romances in the last books, in which the psy half of the couple always had to be awakened to their feelings.
Clay was a rather good dark and brooding hero, and Talin a very strong heroine, who's had a horrible past that still affects her.
The plot was interesting too and we also find out a bit more about the psy-net, which is disintegrating more and more.

I really enjoyed it. It was a little slow in the beginning, but it eventually picked up. The characters in this book are the ones that were my favorites in the Vampire Academy series, and I am glad I got to learn more about them. There is still a lot to learn. So many unanswered questions. A great promise of an excellent journey to come.

On the Edge (The Edge, #1) by Ilona Andrews

I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the other two books in Ilona Andrew's Edge Series.
The fantasy aspect was interesting with the different worlds exiting next to each other. I loved the interation between the heroine and the hero and the story had a fairy tale feel to it.
Apart from the two main characters I loved the children the most. I always enjoy reading an author who just gets what's going on it a child's head and how they reason with each other. Sometimes you read a dialog between an adult an a child and you think to yourself. Hang on, as this author ever heard a child speak. Anyway, very different from the Kate Daniels book, more harmless in a way but very enjoyable.

Solid 4.25 and I suspect the other books in this trilogy will be 5 star reads. Emma lives by herself in a small town. Her mother is decease and dad went MIA before she was born. She's attacked by strange people with red eyes one day. An unknown rescuer grabs her and takes her to safety. This is her crash course in the supernatural world. Rescued by werewolves and finds out she's vampire royalty. Instantly she bonds with Caleb her rescuer. He's been hired by her dad to get her to safety. After an instant courtship and mate bonding with him she has to go meet her fathers vamp family. Werewolves aren't allowed to know where the vampires live so Caleb can't come with her. Can they survive the separation and can Emma decide not to be a part of her long lost family? It seems everyone in the supernatural world wants a piece of Emma in one fashion or another. I can't wait to continue on with this trilogy!

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments The Black Prism (Lightbringer, #1) by Brent Weeks

Favorite Author Shelf
The Black Prism by Brent WeeksFinished: September 26, 2012
Rating: ★★★★★ 4¾ stars
Number of pages: 629

Review: This was one jam-packed, doorstopper-sized epic/heroic fantasy. I became a fan of author for his Night Angel trilogy but had no clue what to expect. It was an amazing book and start of a series. The 629-page clunker needed every page to tell the story, flesh out the characters, and setup the worldbuilding--and managed to do so without being confusing and was incredibly fast-paced and action-packed on each and every page. Not confusing but intense enough that reader needed to pay attention rather then breeze thru quickly. And still obviously more to tell despite the ending not being a cliffhanger. Other than that, I'm not real sure how to review as there was so much. Not set in Night Angel world or in any way reminescient.

I avoided letting other reviews color my opinion of book; now, I see reviewers going thru what was and was not formula, what subplots or characters reminded them of what ... well, everything really felt original to me. My big red flags were up at times where I worried might head to something formulaic, for example, with one of the characters, Kip (and, yup, I kept mentally flashing to Have Space Suit - Will Travel every time I saw it) being young and headed for the special training academy--but he barely got there before events quickly had him off again so no formula/trope thing there or anywhere for me in this book. I really enjoyed the read more than this not-so-well-written review can express.

Compared to books I rated 5-stars (including others by this favorite author), very, very minor things I did not care for; again, very miniscule and very small part of book so only lost about a quarter of a star for me: The big reveal about the brothers Gavin and Dazen about 40% into the book was jarring and I never really bought into it until nearly the end, I dislike the we-have-been-so-in-love-years but deliberately keep apart subplots, the Prism was a bit too powerful edging on the dreaded deus ex machina, and some tiny problems with battle scenes. Kariss was written as a kick-ass heroine, so I get it -- but some scenes with a lot of stunts and leaping about that would work great in a Matrix type of movie but not well in this book where the battle scenes were otherwise well done; just that in sword fighting--any experienced opponent would just angle their blade so that the leaping body weight would impale it on the point and go back to battle next enemy. (Sorry, lettered in fencing in high school so those types of scenes throw me; but, likely just a personal pet peeve that other readers would not care about as much they would just enjoy an action-packed scene).

I'm really not sure I'll post an actual review (beyond a 5-star rating) on book's product page. Will have to think about because I'm still not real sure how to review the thing.

5-stars is pretty telling even if rounding up from my 4¾-star nitpicking. Would not recommend to anyone looking for passionate lovestory, irritated by multiple POVs or needing the big happily ever after finish.
