Kerstin | 862 comments New Shelf!! It's too hard to decide on a book otherwise; I'm worried that whatever book I start reading now could have actually worked for the next shelf, lol.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Aaaahhh...shelf limbo. Oh well, I have a couple of chicklit things downloaded from library to start that likely won't be on shelf.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Well, I just unfriended someone whose reviews I liked. Just one last time they got on my nerves with enough graphics and animations that force me thru too many screens (really no fun on smartphone) to see anyone else's updates. I question copyrights on a lot of what I see...

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Do watch frequently for early shelf post. Last time a typhoon threatened Japan, Steph did call early and this is going on with Super Typhoon Jelawat http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/c...

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments How's it going for you first timers? Any questions? Completely caught on to the easier-to-play than explain game?

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 1179 comments I think the game is going good so far :)
I guess we're one book short of our stamp right?

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments 1 book short for favorite author and 3 short for free space stamp. No worries until a shelf call makes a team have 4 in a row...then the whip will get cracked!

Amber (crazyaboutbooks) | 499 comments 9-27-12 Brightest Kind of Darkness (Brightest Kind of Darkness, #1) by P.T. Michelle 4 1/2*Free Space

Definite page turner with lots of twists and turns.
I could feel the doubts, the heartaches, the need, the love, the pain, the coldness and the lightness. Some of the story reminded me of the movie Final Destination, but the author creates so much more, takes it that one step further that brings it from good to superb. I can't wait to read the second book in the series, Lucid.

Do you have overdrive app working directly? I had it working when colornook first came out except it still made me tether to computer and go thru Adobe Digital Editions unless I hacked (then would have to unhack to get software updates, rehack, unhack...wasn't worth it ). Worked great, and quickly, once I remembered where I put the cord...but haven't done in a while because overdrive on desktops, android tablets and iPad worked better and quicker. And then my non-backlit kindle started using...

No harm, no foul if you want to change free space read. Helps on first 2 3/4 books in that series if you barely pay any attention to parts that are lurker/bad-guy POV. About that point she also stops making the guys have their oddly girlie little chats--I think; I still have not finished the series as am getting them slowly from library with waiting lists.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments SHELF was announced, urban fantasy by the link specified: http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/u... and in a diagonal line with kick-ass heroine and free space.

Personally I am debating One Foot in the Grave, Some Girls Bite, Claimed By Shadow or Another One Bites the Dust.

Any one read? Any of them going to be slow reads or hard to get into?

message 220: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 1179 comments I'm reading Pretty When She Kills (Pretty When She Dies #2) by Rhiannon Frater

message 221: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (guinivere87) | 174 comments @Deborah: I couldn't get into the Chicagoland vampire series at all. The main characters annoyed me to no end. Claimed by Shadows is great though. Lost of action, doesn't let up. One of my favourite series.

I'll be reading City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare . It's been on my TBR pile for freaking ever.

message 222: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (Reading is Better With Cupcakes) (imjustcupcake) | 255 comments City of Bones was pretty good. I saw a lot of Harry Potter influence when I read it.

I will be reading The Iron Queen (The Iron Fey, #3) by Julie Kagawa thanks to mr random generator

And Deb, I would go for Claimed By Shadow. That's a great series!

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments I think I'll read Claimed By Shadow thinking (judging by first in both series) I will read faster than One Foot in the Grave -- thinking will get to the other for another shelf call. Will switch if drags for me for some reason.

Urban Fantasy Shelf

★★★☆☆

I wasn't too impressed with this one. The main characters seem kind of dumb and flat to me. The author seems to spell everything out and it makes the main character seem so oblivious. The answers to everything seem so easily figured out. Even the way she randomly threw names out for the very secondary characters. Yet I know I will read the next one.

Stephanie (Reading is Better With Cupcakes) (imjustcupcake) | 255 comments Sorry my reviews are always so short. Somethings going on with my hands, so it is hard to type. Ill hopefully have this problem solved soon though.

Kerstin | 862 comments Jennifer wrote: "@Kerstin: Are the Bloodhound Files worth it? Sounds unique. Is there anything you would compare it to?"

I really enjoy them, though they're not absolute favourites. I think it depends if you end up liking Jace, the heroine. She's rather snarky, rude and at times bitchy and I know a lot of people don't like her. The world itself is interesting and quite unique and the plot a mix of crime-thriller-fantasy with a little dash of romance and a bit of humour.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Claimed By Shadow (Cassandra Palmer, #2) by Karen Chance

Urban Fantasy Shelf
Claimed By Shadow by Karen Chance
Finished: October 1, 2012
Rating: ★★★✩✩
Number of pages: 384

Review: I like the heroine and overall storyline of this book and the series. In this one, she does become the Pythia, the Myra plotline resolved, Tomas and Pritkin back, other familiar characters (not enough Micea of course). Overall enjoyed reading; still suffers from infodumps and huge chunks of conspiracy theories that go nowhere yet that are no fun to push thru then last 20% of the book redeems it again. No big cliffhanger ending but enough left unresolved there's obviously more to come.

Urban Fanstasy shelf

Who in their right mind would be scared of a monster in the closet, if that same monster cooked muffins???
This story was great entertainment!
Here's how the story started "Of all the possible weapons I might have grabbed, I chose a toilet brush."
If you are looking for a fun, unique urban fantasy that is not your typical vampire, shape shifter, angel, ghost... whatever... this is the book. You won't find ANY of the typical creatures that are in the mainstream books in Monster in My Closet
I'm sure there will be additional books...Just can't see why not.

I really didnt enjoy this one. I found it very boring. Maybe it was because it was about Butch and I have never found myself caring much about him. Maybe it was because Marissa just came off as a stupid idiot. Also, there were so many points in the book where the conversation just sounded lame, true? It didn't flow well. And the lesser scenes, oh how I hated them. I was so happy when this book was finally over.

Kerstin | 862 comments Back from the Undead (The Bloodhound Files #5) by D.D. Barant
Shelf: Urban Fantasy
Completed: 3/10/12
Rating: ★★★

This instalment was a little bit disappointing. The initial case Jace picked up about some missing pire children seemed interesting enough, but unfortunately it ended up being only a minor plot point. Instead there was a lot of Japanese mythology thrown in, mixed with magic, a bunch of gods, the Yakuza and to top it off, a Samurai. All up this made for a very convoluted story, of which I have to admit, I lost track at times.
Jace and Charlie, my favourite golem, still had some funny exchanges, and an old character surprisingly re-emerged. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, but to be quite honest I'm not in the greatest rush to pick up the next book.

I read Pretty When She Kills (Pretty When She Dies #2) by Rhiannon Frater finished 10/2/12
★★★★☆

Here's my review:
4.25
In the second installment of pretty when she dies Amilyia is growing more comfortable in her new vamp and necromancy powers. Meanwhile Sam has started seeing ghosts and one of the Summoners offspring has decided to get revenge for his murder. Pete, Sergio, and Innocente have hooked up with a vampire hunter who claims he can cure Amilyia. Lots of little plots happening that tie into one major oh me ending! The group of vamps, humans, hunters, shifters, and necromancers reminds me of Georgina Kincaid's rag tag eclectic group. I have really enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy and can't wait for the final one next year!

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Hey! Just one more book on each of the three possible shelves and I can put in a stamp request...maybe by next shelf call?

Ooooooh! Oooooh! Oooooh! Maybe next shelf call will line up four in a row for us! Looking at all the BINGO cards spreadsheet...I am rooting for "favorite series" to get called. Then make it possibly the shortest round ever if "YA paranormal" follows...(follows; YA not wanted next call 'cause gives another team 4 lined up)

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Aaah! I got so excited when I saw a new post, glanced and saw bookcover with stars...durn..just a quote...I need to get a life! (But that could interfere with my reading hours...)

If I skip Lover Revealed in Black Dagger Brotherhood series...I really could care less about Marissa and Butch lost it for me with the uninteresting romance/angst bit with her...any harm to series plotline?

I think Butch could have been an interesting character until they made him go all bro-mance (not to mention a shoulder to cry on for the guys in romance doldrums and the girly emote fests always read awkward for me when the BDB indulged much less that after centuries together they confess all to the newcomer) and then all angst ridden over Marissa.
