David (senatorb) | 5 comments I feel like I could use some work on my reading speed.

Does anybody have any recommendations for speed reading courses or techniques that could help me?

Thank you!

KWinks (icameheretoread) | 31 comments I am a big believer that reading is like a muscle in your body. The only way to improve reading is to read more. Reading well written books (literary) over nonliterary will strengthen your reading skills. I find that not reading on a device that also connects to the internet helps too. The urge to pop open a window and "check" something just equals stalled reading.

For speed specifically, I recommend rereading a favorite. We do this with kids all of the time. The familiarity of it lets you move along at a good clip and the reader is already comfortable with the characters, settings, etc. Plus it's fun to revisit favorites. I reread American Gods and Neverwhere every two years (they alternate).

This is not directly in relation to your question, but I work at a library and I hear (about 20 times a day) "I wish I had time to read".
There is time to read, everyday. Readers always find time to read. Life, chores, work and sleep get in the way, sure. But so does hours and hours of pointless television and internet surfing.

I never consider time spent reading a waste of time, even when I end up not enjoying the book.
