Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Our next shelf is up ~ 'Series Catch-up'
Happy Reading!

ETA: This is a personal shelf, not a GR shelf. So, as long as the book is 200+ pgs, part of a series and book 2 or higher in that series it's acceptable.

Actually I want both to wake up :)

I get my caffeine from Coca-Cola. Never did care for coffee. ;) Thanks though.

Oh and as far as I can tell (unless my sleepy eyes deceive me) this is not a potential winning shelf for any team(s).

Does a book count if it's the second in a series of 2 (assuming it meets all other requirements)?

Wondering....if it's the last published book in a series (more than 2 books published), does it count as catch-up? I'm thinking using the tenth book in a series. Just checking.

message 427: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I think that as long as you are catching up on the series, you are good to go.

Or do you mean just reading the #10 in a series without reading the first 9? Because in that case, I don't think that's allowed. The point is to catch up in a series that's already started (at least, that's what i think!)

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9662 comments I know it's stretching the limit, that's why I asked. put this way, reading #10 out of 10 would also mean that I am up-to-date in reading this series too. Depends from your point of view.

message 430: by Samantha (last edited Oct 16, 2012 10:40AM) (new)

Samantha | 90 comments Then you'd be completely "caught-up" with that series, so it ends up working out either way. :)

message 431: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments The idea is to catchup on a series you have already started reading. Doesn't matter if it is book 2 or 10, just that you have already started the series and are continuing on.

Some people don't read all books in order and that is fine, as long as you have already started the series.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9662 comments Thanks Sandra!

Thenia | 977 comments We've got another MIA player at Team #11...

I sent her two messages to which she hasn't replied and she hasn't checked in since late September.

What's the verdict?

message 435: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments We've been discussing it Thenia and the verdict was we decided to give her till tomorrow and then if no show, she's gone.

Same deal as before, any interested potential bingo players please put your hand up, if none appear, we'll do the 5 player team juggle.

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments I know I am new, but I hope the mods are keeping an eye of the people who disappearing. I understand that life happens, but at least say something to your teammates. I think those people should get red cards (if you play soccer) for the next round (IMO)

message 438: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments This round seems to have an unusually high number of missing players. I don't remember seeing so many before.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Everyone understands life happens; but, I agree -- just rude to not let your teammates know as soon as you can. Too much technology floating around to not be able to check in within a week or two to let them know something's up and you have to drop out.

message 440: by Thenia (new)

Thenia | 977 comments Mary wrote: "This round seems to have an unusually high number of missing players. I don't remember seeing so many before."

Me either! Two of them were in my team this round which is very frustrating, since neither bothered to let us know that they can't keep going..

message 441: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I think a lot of people get excited about the game and sign up without really understanding what they are signing up for. So they may be really slow readers - I know GR members who read a book a month - or they are not very active GR members and just check here and there and then forget about the whole thing.

Suggestion for the next round: make clear that players may have to read a book a week and that this may go for 8+ weeks depending on the randomizer. I'm NOT saying to make it a requirement for people to read each shelf the week is called - I understand that most people catch up by the end and not everybody reads every shelf and that's fine as long as you keep your team in the running. But at the end, the idea is that everybody should read most of the shelves called so they give their team a chance to win. If you cannot read more than 1 or 2 books in 8 weeks or maybe you don't read as much UF/PNR books and you don't like the shelves etc. then you should NOT join.

message 442: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments In my other challenges, after two weeks of no word, your team can vote to replace the person. Of course, there must be no contact for two weeks, and you have sent pm's to that person.

When this situation happened, the missing teammate was still active on goodreads, updating books read, leaving comments on other threads, so she wasn't gone from goodreads, just from our challenge.

I think I know who you're talking about, but I agree with you. If you know you'll be MIA for some time,

message 444: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments There were a lot of players this round, quite a few had to be newbies. And sometimes you're just not in the mood to read what you're supposed to read at a particular time. That's why I've never played Bingo. I'm a moody reader and I wouldn't want to let down my team by quitting midway through. Maybe that's how they feel too? Embarrassed and guilty? Still, it's preferable to let someone know you're dropping out; a PM to Steph or another team member.

The fascinating thing about the shelves is that you can find something that interests you on pretty much every shelf. Last round, we noticed that 50 shades of grey was on every shelf, no matter what. It would have made an awesome drinking game.

Real life happens and that is understandable. It is good etiquette to let your team know.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 9662 comments let's not forget that you only need 5 in a row for Bingo. You can have one picky reader and still win. You just have to make every read count. I, myself, prefer to read a book for each shelf...just in case.

message 447: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments LOL, AH so true! That and Harry Potter! We were laughing in some other group I belong because somebody found an HP book in 'American History'!

Yes, we need only 5 in a row for Bingo but the thing is that if you're not at least close to keeping up (read at least 3 books), then when the shelf is called, you won't be able to catch up! Specially because in the last few rounds more than one team is eligible to win so if you want to give your team a chance, then you have to read quickly.

LOL. The person I am refering to didn't have a medical issue and real life crisis--which in my opinion is a great reason to take a break. This person was just involved in so many challenges, she was losing track of where she checked in etc...

No one should put a challenge above their health! so if someone have real life issues, by all means, withdraw and handle job, life, marriage whatever. But don't keep others dangling in the wind.

I need a drink after reading THAT bit of trivia. Beer with my empanadas goes great I say.

But on topic, this round has been like a revolving door. A pity. And dropping a comment in the thread if you are leaving is so easy.

Well, the first book is on 12,000 shelves! About 25,000 in total.

ETA: And of course, Harry Potter #1 beats that with 23,000 shelves.
