BINGO R6 | Discussion Thread
Cristina, thanks for volunteering. Heather has internet again and is back on her team.Would you mind if we keep you on our replacement list for this round, in case something else happens to someone else?
Thanks, Cristina. And, to everyone for sharing your thoughts. BSB is a team challenge, emphasis on team, so I do my best to stress the importance of active participation throughout the duration of the game. I also stress the fact that there is no way to tell how long the game will last and I mention how long previous rounds have lasted as a guide. We do not want to discourage anyone from playing, but we will not allow people who have dropped of the GR map (or at least BSB map) continue to sign up for future rounds. We are all understanding of RL issues, believe me, I've got plenty myself, we all do. But, please be courteous and get a message to either a mod or a teammate if you must withdraw. IT'S OKAY. No one is going to ban you or bash you for having to bail. There's a big difference between just disappearing from the game without a word and bowing out b/c of more pressing issues. That said, please don't sign up if you aren't completely committed to playing.
I always note that while there is no time limit, teams will not get a shelf stamp until everyone on the team has read, rated and reviewed their book. We'd all love to get a stamp each week, but that's just the luck of the draw really. Everyone reads at a different pace. It's up to you to decide if you want to get involved in a game that has a certain amount of pressure put on how quickly books are read. If it's too stressful, don't join, just cheer on everyone else from the sidelines.
Sorry to ramble, but each round of BSB sees more and more and more players joining. But, sadly that also seems to mean more will fall to the wayside. I would like to say I've discovered genius methods to keep that from happening in the future, but try as I might I don't think I can. I LOVE that there is growing interest in this wacky game and I would hate to see several ruin the fun of it for many.
Final words ... before signing up for a future round of BSB, please read the instructions in their entirety and please consider the unknown length of the game. If you sign up, please respect your teammates who are depending on you. If you must drop out, tell someone. If you love it, let us know!

Oh thanks, I meant to say/ask that too, but got to ramblin' and forgot. :D
Definitely you can put me on the reserve list. Might send me a pm though if I you want me to fill in, just in case. I'll be here if ya'll need me. :)
Well said Steph. I had 3 team challenges with missing teammates and I swore off team challenges. I am competitive when I play...but im also a glutton for punishment because i came back. but to my surprise this round is going well in the challenges

Actually, I like the current rule that you have to check in once a week. Not forced to read a book a week, but do need to check in. Not too much to ask of anyone.
Maybe up front remind players that if they can't get into book picked, they can switch. And that BINGO is a team challenge and your team members will be expecting you to have read your book within 1 to 2 weeks of shelf call. Unlike individual challenges, failure to complete isn't just about you.
Disliked shelfs? Doesn't really matter as somebody somewhere along the line will have done some oddball shelving (and moderators deliberately choose well-populated shelves) where you can find something nowhere near related to shelf.

You are very clear on the rules, Steph. I just think some people don't realize that there is some pressure to finish books in a certain amount of time and that most of us are trying to compete!
I have to admit that it really frustrates me to be in a team challenge when there's a member of my team that's always behind. I want to message them to nag and ask why they joined a team challenge in the first place if they're too busy to finish 1 book a week. Grr.. But I resist. It hasn't been an issue for me recently though. I've had good teams of speedy readers. I don't mind if during this someone slacks off on a book that does the team no good yet. I personally make an effort to read them all. But I have skipped some where the shelf gave my team nothing while having a book for it on hand and ready to read quickly if needed.
I think you should read each shelf you never know if it's going to change with the next item called and then you'd have to hurry up and finish your shelves.
I join these challenges because they force me to read something that I wouldn't have read at a given time.3 books that I have NOT have read but for challenges this past couple of months:
1)
2)
3)
I have loved all of them so far!
Just had a thought about a possible help for future bingo rounds. If a team has six players for intance, what about requiring only five of them to finish reading and post a review, in order to get the stamp for their team. (Whichever five teammates finish the shelf first). That way there is a little leeway for the team, if someone is having a hard time finishing a shelf for whatever reason. Also, someone who doesn't read at least one book a week can still participate at their own pace without slowing the game down at all. Just a thought :)
I still think participants should expect to read a book every 1-2 weeks. I'm not against the only 5 on a 6-person team having to read if that's where group wants to go. But, not completely sure it's fair to participants who do the reads that one team member doesn't have to.
As it is, because of shelf randomness and assorted BINGO cards, a team always reading and stamping first and putting forth the effort can lose if shelf calls fall wrong.
I think if a team member doesn't check in or respond to pm's within a few days of shelf call, mods should have a sub start book. If they checkin before week up, fine; if not sub carries on and they are out. I'd feel differently if one week deadline not in the rules or if the book absolutely had to be finished same week. But, just to checkin, particularly if you see them active on goodreads, nope, not too much to ask.
Maybe the subs and backups can have an optional team thread themselves. Read along with called shelves and post reviews on the thread whenever they feel like it. Then as team members drop out, carry their review posts over to whatever team moderators ask them to help.Could also be a "play along" thread for members missing signup deadline or just wanting to try before committing to a round.
Everyone on this thread, including potential subs, could choose when or if they wanted to participate on a shelf. But, mods would likely pick the subs who had read shelf (s) departing player left team stuck with and have a good idea who would be a good team player after asking who was ready to play for real on that thread.

No stamps and cards for mods to maintain on the play-a-long thread of course; I think it would be a nightmare tracking individuals; teams enough work.Anyone playing along could of course feel free to adopt another team's card and track themselves. Or maybe mods could create, not track, just create one card for anyone on that thread to track themselves (again, mods and ninjas have enough work tracking teams and would not stamp, check, or otherwise get involved).
Hmm. Having a "sub" thread is an interesting idea. I agree about no official card -- after all, how would it look if the sub team called bingo! :)
*chuckle* might light a fire under more than one team, lol
Well, in the first round, maybe first couple we did do the say 5 of 6 people reading, rating, reviewing but felt it was unfair to the rest of the team members, because it tended to be the same people not reading. So we've done that and it didn't really work.As for the sub list, we generally have a few people who for one reason or another like to go on the reserve list. This round, everyone wanted to play and we didn't have any reserves. We've been lucky that a couple of members have stepped up and joined in.
Of course, any member of SOS is welcome to read along with the Bingo players and record their reads in the members thread area. I list my reads there usually, along with all my challenges.
I still gotta go to sleep, have sweet, sweet dreams, wake up with the sun for my breakfast date with Mr. R so I can get this week's golden envelope with the shelf selection. I'll just be puttin' on my eye mask and my ear plugs and I'll meet ya back here in a few, k? >;)

He's not that type of a guy. Plus, hubby frowns on stuff like that. ;)
Well since you're still up Steph might as well call the new shelf after all it's Sunday in Japan now :)

(And yes, that makes me psycho, I know!). These are my very favorite challenges, so thanks!
Thanks, Mandy. Glad you're enjoying it x 4. :D Does the 4 include us?I love that movie too, Breann.
Our next shelf is up ~ 'demons'
Happy Reading!
