Cloud Atlas
question
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

Has anyone heard of and/or read this book? Movie trailer was a bit confusing but looked interesting at the same time. Any comments?

Is this book about reincarnation by any chance?? The movie preview looks that way. I hope I'm not giving any spoilers.
I enjoyed this book! It took me a bit to get into but then as I read it I thought a lot about it when I was not reading. That is the type of book I really enjoy. I plan to read another one of his books in about a week.
Hi Christy,
Yes, I saw the trailer last weekend and it inspired me to get a copy of the book. I finished it over the last three days.
In short, it's a great book. David Mitchell has a remarkable talent for writing words in very different genres. Each of the six stories within Cloud Atlas would stand out well alone but together they are a tour de force.
Pros: Great ideas, epic scope, great characters. My personal favourite was the Luisa Rey story followed closely by Robert Frobisher's.
Cons: The threads between the stories are not as strong as I expected that they would be. Yes, there is a common thread that connects them together, and yes, a torch is passed from each narrator to the next, but I never felt that any story was more than a passing reference in each of their lives. I had expected the experiences of each to shape and influence the destinies of the others.
I should also mention that the language in the first and the last story can be quite hard to follow but my advice is to just go with it. The package is worth persevering with just to see how it all comes together in the end.

Yeah the movie definately has to be entertaining and be easy to follow. The book is a lot less forthcoming. That's what makes the story so interesting
