If Sadie had gone through the portal

Atest Page When would Sadie have come out? Al had ventured in and out of the portal for years, returning two minutes after he had left. If Sadie went through the portal (in 1963) wouldn't she come out two minutes from the time she entered (still in 1963)?

Ann No. Al came in from the future. Sadie was always in the past. She would have come out as an old woman.

No, she would have come out in 2011 as still a young woman.

When Al brought the meat back from the past, it wasn't automatically aged fifty years. Sadie would not have aged either.

I thought Ann had a point. But yeah your right.

Gretchen I believe she would have come out at her current age to the year 2011. I was under the impression that the particular worm hole in use connected those exact moments in time for whomever ventured in and out of them. With the assumption that there were other worm holes connecting other periods of time.

Ann I stand corrected. You are right

Maria I also believe she would have come out at her current age to the year 2011 - but then if she were to re-enter it in 2011 to go back to 1963 years later, then maybe it would only be 2 minutes later in 1963 ?

I think the two minute thing is when you go back to your "normal" time from either the past or the future.

Patty I think if she would have traveled to 2011 there would have been a snap someplace, a broken that could never have been repaired.

Craig Stratton Maybe the wormhole only works to send you into the past from your original time. Maybe Jake would have gone back to 2011, but Sadie would have gone back 53 years to 1910.

Maria Craig, I never thought of that. Could very well be that it only goes backward. However, what if they held hands and went back through, thinking that she was going with him back to 2011? Wow, it's cool to think about.

Eva Hmmm, feels like a dead end to discuss the what ifs of a fictional wormhole, but Craig, this particular wormhole sends you to a particular time and place, not *just* 53 years back. No?

Susan I think a wormhole connects two distinct points. Also, when Jake went back to 1963, he did not come out as a little boy.

Joyce Oxfeld I don't think Sadie could have survived. At some point in some way, she would have perished.

Joyce Oxfeld Did you people actually finishe the book? I did. No spoilers here.

Jane Lee I was actually dissapointed that Jake didn't take her with him to 2011, and at the same time, I understand why he didn't too.

Emilio I think the rabbit hole is exactly that, a hole. Sadie would have emerged whole and unaged the same way the same meat made the travel beck time and time again (pun intended) or Jake's clothing from his first travel went back to the past the second time and coexisted with its resetted reality counterpart.

The damage that would have done to the very fabric of reality is another question, though...

Tash Dahling Given that Jake only aged as many years as he had spent away from "his" time, I think Sadie would have passed through unaged.

Brian Bigelow I would think the physics time travel conundrum would probably be broached. What would happen if you met yourself 50 years later? That does open a whole other can of worms. It could have changed a whole bunch of other things in the 2011 world. I'm wondering if she would exist as an older person at the same time.

Emilio The same past meat was brough over and over again and on his second travle Jake sees exposed the same shirt he's wearing, bought the first time. The rabbit hole connects divergent realities (the threads inside the head of the Red Card Men, multipliying with each travel and each change) so everyting's is possible. If Sadie had come to 2011 they would have arrived to a timeline where she suddenly dissapeared in 1963, and would she have gone back to the past she might meet her 1962 original self.

The book is written from Jake's point of view. By the way, that's the Jake from the reality to which his friend returns, the one where the wheelchair bound girl doesn't get shot. That means Jake is not native to the final, untouched timeline he ends living in (which could mean it's a better world than the one he comes from).

Emilio -I'm having a headache
-It tends to happen when you discuss temporal paradox.

Tash Dahling I don't think Sadie would meet her older self if she went through the portal, as the Sadie who would have gone on to live to her 80s would cease to exist on her original timeline. Does that make sense?

Emilio Whatever Jake brought back to the present (clothing, money...) didn't vanish when he carried back to the past resetting original timeline it belonged to.

Dave Tash wrote: "I don't think Sadie would meet her older self if she went through the portal, as the Sadie who would have gone on to live to her 80s would cease to exist on her original timeline. Does that make s..."

Agreed. Basically, she'd have disappeared in late November 1963 and re-emerged 48 years later. She'd have no chance to meet her older self because that older self wouldn't exist in this timeline.
A much bigger conundrum would have occurred if Jake brought Sadie to our time, then they returned to 1958. At that point, you'd have two Sadie Dunhills.
