Did Collins succeed in addressing social issues in Hunger Games?

I thought she touched on some other issues, and was surprised that she didn't run on with them. The removal of all of Katniss' body hair for example, and her "beautification" for the games. I was expecting more of a point to be made about natural vs manmade beauty, or the pressures of being the public eye.
