I would say that the effort is not futile, as I will always find the crown and put it on my own head. Though you may try to steal it back, you will not win.

PUNY REBELS! As you remember, the crown was indeed originally mine. Please, leave my nice, beautiful crown alone! Well, now my army has come after you and taken the crown back. You shall be beheaded in the royal court if you do not bow to the queen with the crown (wow we have really gotten into this)
Reed, if you are halfway across the ocean, why not just keep the crown and take over a new kingdom? You already have the crown, which is expensive and your new kingdom might not have good jewelers to fashion one as good as that. The only problem is that you will have to take over a kingdom, or the ocean could be your kingdom.
