Only on page 19. Anyone else having a surprising amount of trouble getting into it? I will press on, though!
Happy to hear that! Still on page 19 because I got drawn into a busy work week, but I will definitely push myself because I do suspect it will draw me in eventually!
Okay, page 53, chapter 10 - finally getting more into it! I think I just don't enjoy action sequences in general, and in particular when I'm not firmly grounded in the characters and the situation.
Page 218; chapter 45 -- finally drawn in now that I feel more connected to the characters and have a little more background. One thing about these books is that I kind of wish he wouldn't even try for the teen romance. In all the books, I can't really feel the chemistry between the supposed couples and it feels a bit gratuitous, as if he feels he has to construct a romance in order to appeal to the full YA audience.
Page 111: Chapter 22. Hi everyone. I'm new to the club and excited to be a member. I just started the book yesterday (there was a wait for it at the library), but woke up at 2:45 am for some reason and read until 6 am. This is the first book by James Dashner I read. I think that Dashner uses the fact that Alec and Lana are both of the career military mindset to overlook the emotional aspects of three core members of their group all dieing, especially the way they died. I realize I haven't lived through a cataclysmic natural disaster and the chaos that follows but having people close to me die would set something off emotionally inside me. And Mia, as for the romance, you're right, it does seem a little forced and maybe a little one sided. But I've chalked that up to teenage angst. (Yes, I'm really into emotions!) It's nice meeting everyone!
Okay, folks - just finished it! I did get more engaged as it went on. As I said before, I don't particularly love reading lots of action sequences, so I got a little bogged down by that, but, after a slow start, I did start enjoying getting to know the characters. (By the way, Karen, I'm new, too, although I've been discussing books with Sammee for ages! If you read the rest of his Maze Runner series, I wonder if you'll agree that writing teen romance isn't Dashner's forte -- group, what do you think?)
