What Else Are You Reading? September 2012
I'm reading A Canticle for Leibowitz for another book club, and Other Worlds Than These edited by John Joseph Adams. The story in there by Seanan McGuire made me cry, AGAINST MY WILL. Ha.
Just finished Abercrombie's Last Argument Of Kings which finishes off the First Law Trilogy. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I'm going to give Abercrombie a break now because I want to listen to his next book on Audible after my current Audible read. So it will be Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis

I thought that book was really good.
I just finished listening to Masques and have moved on to Gone Girl. I'm listening to Existence in spurts because it's really hard to follow.
In text, I'm reading Odd Apocalypse and The Rose Garden.
This month, I finished reading the Portuguese translation of In the Name of Rome: The Men Who Won the Roman Empire, which was great, as Adrian Goldsworthy books usually are. Then I read All My Friends Are Superheroes, which you can finish in less than 1 hour and it's a funny and very creative, love story between a normal guy and a superheroine.
After that I moved on to The Breach, which is also a fast read (2 days) cause the pace never slows down and I'm currently reading the second book, Ghost Country, since it's a trilogy.

I'm slowly working my way through Frankenstein and Through the Language Glass: Why the World Looks Different in Other Languages. The Master and Margarita is probably going to go on my On-Hold list soon.
Just started King Rat. Will be interesting to go back to China Miéville's first book.
Finished Dirty Streets of Heaven. That book was not meant for me, I don't hate many books, but this one came close. I think I'll keep my Urban Fantasy consum to TV and movies from now on.
I'm listening to Legend which seems to be so far a YA future-setting sci-fi/thriller type. It's pretty formulaic so far. After this I might give God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales a go. Still reading The Way of Kings. It's so good.

Kind of a slog, yeah?

That review is pretty spot on.
I've become inured to UF so I was pretty meh about it overall. It was nothing special or mindblowing. Just another paint-by-numbers UF. Decent for a boring afternoon read.

Agreed. Review nails it pretty much. That Williams can't write women, I've accepted a long time ago, but don't get me started on the "imagine-movie-scene-here" scenes. And the bathroom mirror scene. And the ... well just a lot of lazy writing. (That I kept waiting for the Winchesters to jump out of the underbrush didn't help either)
Listening to The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter now. On chpt 11 now, so far so good.
Really enjoyed Throne of the Crescent Moon. Already started Engraved on the Eye. After that, it will probably be time for the next club book.
I'm reading Ghost Country now because of Procastinador. Read The Breach this morning.
Not exactly stellar, but fun little page-turner books.

Exactly my thoughts, though I'm enjoying the plot of this second one more...unfortunately my brother says the last one is the worst of the three.

Just finished Citizen X by Thomas DePrima. This is the first book in a spin-off series from his Jenetta Carver/A Galaxy Unknown series (called AGU: Border Patrol).I think that in some ways DePrima managed to snooker himself with the Jen Carver books, simply dfrom the rate at which she rose through the ranks. Merely an Ensign in book 1, by the end of book 9, she's an Admiral in charge of half the galaxy (or at least the human bit of it).
And so, this series comes as a bit of a reboot, and we meet a new Lieutenant (jg) fresh out of the academy who, despite being number 7 in the class, gets posted to the oldest, worst ship in the fleet (where all the screw ups go), at the arse end of Sector One running border patrol. Should be a safe, boring gig, right? Right?
If you like space opera and feisty heroines, this is a good read. Kindle only at the mo though.
If you like space opera and feisty heroines, this is a good read. Ooh. I do like those things!
Just finished Caliban's War and I know I'm repeating old news here, but for everyone who was asking where the women were in Leviathan Wakes, THEY ARE ALL IN THIS BOOK. Chrisjen Avasarala is awesome and I love her.
Next up is Royal Assassin.
I finished A Dance With Dragons which was good but does end with cliff hangars, plural. It is known.
I am now on Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation which is not Sci-Fi/Fantasy but interesting none the less.
Next up is Ready Player One which I may start this month but probably won't finish.

Ready Player One is def. On my to read list.
Ayesha wrote: "In honor of Mr Levar Burton, I’ve pulled Roots The Saga of an American Family off my “to read someday but probably not today” shelf. ..."This book is really long. Did anybody know that? I feel like I should have known that. I've been reading for days and just hit 28%.
Its really good, tho. Kunta is one of the sweetest, most adorable kids I've ever read. I keep dreading what I know is gonna happen to him. Anybody have a version of Roots where Kunta Kinte doesn't wind up on a plantation?
Finished The Long Earth. I absolutely loved it. Great start for a series. Planning on finishing Tigana tonight and starting audio of The Quantum Thief and e-book of eitherHammered by Elizabeth Bear or Runelight by Joanne Harris
I have mainly been catching up on the pics with Hyperion and leviathan wakes since I was way to busy to read at that time, I have also been working some more on the word bearers omnibus.
So I was in Waterstones this afternoon, to pick up a copy of Cloud Atlas for next month when what do I find? None other than Peter F. Hamilton signing his new book,
So I'm sure you can guess what I'm about to start reading... 8-)
(Oh and it's a veritable doorstop - well over 1000 pages!)
Oh, and I got a cheesy pic too! http://www.goodreads.com/photo/user/8... (naturally, I'm the short fat scruffy one!)
Finished Seven Princes which I highly recommend to anyone who likes their epic fantasy with more than a hint of Zothique added to the mix, and started Redshirts by John Scalzi, which is going to be just about as different a book as it's possible to be.

Grrr Americans have to wait til xmas.
Finished Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Started Steven Erikson's new book Forge of Darkness
I've just re read all the Sevenwaters books by Juliet Marillier apart from Seer of Sevenwaters, will start that next after Black Beauty which I'm reading now. Man, haven't had a such a busy month for reading in awhile.
I finished listening to Gone Girl last night. I know it's neither sword nor laser, but it's one of the best books I've ever read. You think you know where it's going, then it takes a sharp twist--in the middle. We all know about twist endings, but twist middles? You have to drop your swords and lasers and read this book.

I've started Bold as Love, which is about rock stars saving the world. Not my usual fare, but I've heard very good things about Gwyneth Jones and so am venturing boldly out of my comfort zone.
FertileSpade wrote: "Just started River of Blue Fire and enjoyibg it. I read Ready Player One and Moby-Dick. I had forget how much I love reading. Getting old sometime makes you forget about the little thing that made you happy as a kid. I am glad I found this group.
Just started Boneyards. Third in the Diving Universe series, which is great if you like space opera that deals with ancient mysteries and space archeology and stuff. And in a rare move I started on a non-fiction book at the same time The Human Predator: A Historical Chronicle of Serial Murder and Forensic Investigation, because ever since the Dexter and Criminal Minds TV series and the John Cleaver books, I'm interested in how those people really work.

Sounds interesting. I've always been into archaeology, so I might check that series out :)
I couldn't bring myself to read the VF pick of the month so I sought out the source material...I'm reading Tales of H. P. Lovecraft
by H.P. Lovecraft, Joyce Carol Oates (Editor) . I'm finding that he had a scarey, twisted mind!

Alas it is not to be. "Not available in the UK". I can get hold of an imported paperback for just shy of £10 (more expensive than many hardbacks). But no kindle/ebook. Bummer. :(

Yeah, I'm from Belgium, so almost everything I read is ordered from across the sea. I'm used to it. :p I usually use Bookdepository.co.uk, they have free world wide shipping.
Finished Hammered and quite enjoyed it, but don't feel the immediate need to move right on to the 2nd book in the series. Also finally finished listening to Anno Dracula wich is a take on the "Jack the Ripper" tale. With Vampires. I found it overly long in some parts and it suffers from Alternate History Namedropping. But it's not a bad book per se. Just not great either.
Moving on to Runelight now because I want something more lighthearted to balance The Quantum Thief. Also more Loki is always a good thing in my book.*g*
At the minute I'm working my way through Railsea and I'm really quite loving it. I'll definitely be reading more Mieville after this. I also finished off World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War earlier in the month.
Reading Caliban's War. Like the increase in the number of viewpoint characters from the prequel, makes it fresher and boosts the intensity and interest level for me.
Got the urge to listen to The Trader Tales by Nathan Lowell again. Currently half way thru book 02 Half Share.
