C.A. Rose | 50 comments My opinion: I think dragons are animals in that they are carnivores, so that the world building would have to take that into account. However, I would prefer that they are more than beasts of burden to be ridden by humans. Rather than being subjugated, I think of dragons as highly evolved and capable of communicating with humans either with speech or mind-speak. However, I see them as selective in their interaction with humans, being not pets but in some cases companions on an equal footing, perhaps even superior in some ways. Being carnivores and secretive adds to the inherent danger and allure of their species. I'd like some cultural development, too.
My thoughts. I've read quite a few books now where they are basically beasts of burden and I want to know them as individual characters, but not strictly as pets.
I'm now reading Irene Radford's "The Hidden Dragon" set on an alien planet with a lost human colony. I'm on page 55 and still haven't "met" a dragon. Part of the fascination of reading about dragons is the creative spin that the authors give, so I'm looking forward to her interpretation. So far the hints that have been given make me think the dragon is worshipped by the humans.

I agree with you in that too many authors have depicted dragons as primitive beasts, without personalities or a distinguishable character. I'm an author too, and I set out to write a story where I could take care of this. In my story, dragons precede humans as the dominant and intelligent creatures of the world. Each of my dragon characters has his or her own personality, and they choose to face up to each situation I put them through in their own unique way. I do not use my dragons as props for the human characters to use and shine.

By the way, if you'd like to check it out, my novel is called DRAGONS, and I have published the first two titles of the series so far, The Essential Ties and The Fury. I have an author page here on Goodreads, so, come and take a look.

Hi Adrienne Interesting bit of information. We have both named our Dragon world Dragonia. I suppose it is a name that comes easily to mind. I wonder if there are more worlds named Dragonia out there by other dragon authors. Has anyone read other books with a world named Dragonia?

I think there's a game named Dragonia, and the creator of Dragon Divine Chronicles named his world Dragonia...I think. Dragonia is a popular name among dragon writers.

Dianne Astle | 45 comments I guess it is a name that makes sense. Just as I was about to publish I discovered a Ben the Dragonborn that was part of Skyrim, but I had been thinking of my book as Ben the Dragonborn for so long that nothing else seemed right.

I quite agree, and your book idea sounds wonderful. My first novel doesn't have humans at all, just the dragons!
