Hint: My value is not in what I am, but what I provide when I serve.
I am very old, and was more useful then.

message 102: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) I have a few ideas but none of them seem right.

message 103: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
You should guess - it might help illuminate the situation.

Or I'll just post the answer in the morning. We seem to have found some toughies lately.

message 104: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) I was going to say mayfly but that doesn't make sense for all the clues. Now I'm thinking it's an inanimate object...

message 105: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
you're headed in the right direction

message 106: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Okay, I reread it and the first line, "My life can be measured in hours," clinched it for me. Is it a candle?

message 107: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments Katie wrote: "Okay, I reread it and the first line, "My life can be measured in hours," clinched it for me. Is it a candle?"

I bet that's right. When I first read it I was thinking fire, but some things didn't quite work. Candle fits all of the criteria in my mind.

Katie wrote: "Okay, I reread it and the first line, "My life can be measured in hours," clinched it for me. Is it a candle?"

You got it. :)

message 109: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Yay! Okay, let me think...

I came into town on Friday and left eight days later on a Friday. How is that possible?

message 110: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
You made a time machine!!! AWESOME! Me next!

message 111: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Nope, try again!

message 112: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
... you took that answer way more seriously than I expected. Guess I wasn't over the top enough. ;)

ok - 12:01 am friday to 11:59 pm the next friday is essentially 8 days, but I don't think rounding up by two minutes is what you had in mind. The town is on the date line and you left from the opposite end of town?

message 113: by Kristen (last edited Sep 11, 2012 09:10AM) (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments I suppose if you showed up at 12:01am on Friday and left at 11:59pm on the following Friday, it would technically be eight days.

message 114: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments Wow. Looks like we had the same idea at the same time, Mike!

Kristen wrote: "Wow. Looks like we had the same idea at the same time, Mike!"

Great minds, and all that. :)

message 116: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Still not correct. Stop thinking about time, that's my hint.

message 117: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
I think this is the first one where I actually groaned out loud when a potential answer hit me:

Friday is the name of the animal (or vehicle) you rode into town.

message 118: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Ding ding ding, tell Mike what he's won! The privilege to ask the next riddle! Congratulations, Mike!

message 119: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Usually the answer is that Friday is the guy's horse.

message 120: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Thanks! Never would've gotten it without your hint...

What starts with a T, ends with a T, and has "T" in it?

message 121: by Kristen (last edited Sep 11, 2012 08:16PM) (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments The letter T? Or the word tantamount.

message 122: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Really like both answers, but not what the riddle's looking for. There's an important contextual clue there that doesn't exactly fit them...

message 123: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) A T-shirt? This is just a wild guess - I was going to go with something like Kristen said, a word with three Ts in it.

message 124: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Or what about a tea pot? Starts with T, ends with T and has "tea" in it.

message 125: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments Katie wrote: "Or what about a tea pot? Starts with T, ends with T and has "tea" in it."

I like this answer.

Me too, which is why I chose the riddle. My guess when I heard it was "tantamount" just like Kristen. Well done Katie! :)

message 127: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Yay, thanks! Okay, here's another groaner, and really more of a joke:

Why didn't the sun go to college?

message 128: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
It didn't think it needed to get any brighter?

message 129: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebakes641) Close but no cigar.

message 130: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
... heh. It didn't think it needed any more degrees?

message 131: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Looked it up and am content with my proximity (typical answer - "because it has a million degrees"). This one made me chuckle.

new riddle:
You heard me before,
Yet you hear me again,
Then I die,
'Till you call me again.

message 132: by Lucus (new)

Lucus | 19 comments An iPhone, or any phone that 'sleeps' until you press its power button.

message 133: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
A very interesting guess. The answer has existed long before such things however (likely long before technology at all...)

Time for the answer or anyone want to guess again given that hint?

message 134: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments I looked up the answer ages ago :( I'm so ashamed. It's been a long time, so I think that you should just put up a new riddle.

message 135: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Wow - just looked at the date on that one. Knew it had been a while, but didn't think it had been close to a month. Lost track of the calendar I guess.

Answer: (view spoiler)

And a new one:
I build up castles.
I tear down mountains.
I make some men blind,
I help others to see.
What am I?

message 136: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) Gaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh. D:

The sun?

message 137: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Nope, but it was one of the first things I thought of too.

message 138: by Selena (last edited Oct 18, 2012 05:29PM) (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) A lantern?

Or maybe sand?

message 139: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Sand it is. Congrats. :) I really like this one - the last two lines particularly are great lateral thinking associations with the answer.

You're up!

message 140: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) Now I need a riddle... Let's see...

You can carry it everywhere you go, but it never gets very heavy. What is it?

message 141: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
I've come up with all sorts of metaphysical answers (your soul, your conscience, hope, memories, etc) but none seem right.

message 142: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) Just say one. lol There are a couple of answers I will take.

message 143: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments How about a tune?

message 144: by Selena (new)

Selena Pigoni (sailorstar165) I'll take that. :) The answer I had seen was "your name."

message 145: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Very nice Kristen! :) I like both that and the intended better than what I was playing around with - all the metaphysical ones could be considered to get "heavy" at times.

message 146: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments Cool! New riddle!

My voice is tender,
My waist is slender,
And I'm often invited to play.
Yet where ever I go,
I must take must take my bow
Or else I'll have nothing to say.

message 147: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
Violin?

message 148: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments Yep! New riddle!

message 149: by Mike (new)

Mike | 1505 comments Mod
In the marble walls as white as wilk,
Lined with skin as soft as silk,
Within a fountain crystal clear,
A golden apple does appear.
No doors are there to this stronghold
Yet thieves break in and steal the gold.

message 150: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments An egg?
