The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset
question
I was not in love nor impressed with this trilogy...anyone else?

This discussion is for people to criticize the better and or worse points of the trilogy and reasons for its popularity along with possible comparisons to newer dystopian works.
I read the Hunger Games only because everyone was making a huge fuss over it, and where I work, it was like blasphemy to not have read it. So, I took the plunge. I came up gasping for air through blood, despair, and characters that I didn't experience enough growth from and ones that stuck around when I wish they hadn't. Katniss Everdeen? Am I the only one who became completely and entirely disenchanted with her after the first book---not to mention was angry and felt a great injustice that Peeta had ended up with her? I never believed that connection, for a second (albeit in the beginning it was merely a ruse) But maybe the point was for Katniss and Peeta's relationship to be a huge disappointment tainted by warfare??
Anyway, anyone who would like to discuss the Hunger Games objectively, (because there were some points I liked) I'd love to hear your point of view!

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Yes it was excessively violent, yes the characters seemed shallow. But what really bothered me was I kept wondering what the heck was going on in the rest of the world. And why was it, if science so so advanced that they could make all those fantastic/horrible mutants, that they couldn't make food and give everyone a decent life? Why was there a rather feudal sort of governance with no trade going on in the world or even between districts?
So for me, the whole premise was weak. But I dutifully plowed through all three books and by the end was exhausted.

I read the first book before everyone got obsessed with the story, and I loved as a stand-alone, I didn't really care that it was kind of unfinished. But I did not enjoy the rest of the series very much. It really was very bleak, and I guess the books are good for making you think about the state of our world and how things could go downhill, but I feel like Suzanne Collins could have made it a little less painful. Did she really have to kill Prim? And it depressed me so much that Katniss lost contact with Gale. I understand why she could blame him for killing Prim, and he blamed himself a little, but I feel like Gale became a whole different person, and that with the loss of their relationship, something was really missing. I don't mind so much that she ended up with Peeta, for the exact reason that they are both so messed up that they need each other. There may not be real love in the begininning, but they care for each other, and they could grow to truly love each other. They have kids to connect them and to put their hopes in, kids who will have a better life, and I think that is the only happy part of the ending. It does seem like no one got a happy ending, but could you really expect them too, going through all they did?
I just found it difficult to believe that people would let that go on for 75 years before finally saying "enough is enough - no more killing of our children!"
I do understand that people would have taken time to gather their courage, resources etc, but I can't see parents putting up with it for that long.

I loved the first two books, but found the last book of the trilogy disappointing. It seemed to me that the ending was rushed and too many loose ends.
i don't agree with you pepole out there who didn't like the trilogy. i LOVED all three books but the movie is a different story. i do think that the third one wasn't as good as the first two but it wasn't that bad
I understand where a lot of you are coming from but some things being said are a bit picky if you ask me.
You can't have all the answers about the rest of the world without drifting from the main focus of the story. And things are always happening where bad things happen in other countries and we know about them yet still do nothing - like all the women and gays being treated like scum and put to death or torture or prison.
It's still so bad with so much technology because even though it is a future world and they COULD help people, there are still sick crazy power hungry people who won't simply because they are sick and crazy people who don't care about those they feel are beneath them.
And finally, there was a chance that they could avoid the games, so the way they saw it was if they started a rebellion then all their families and friends would die while if they stayed quiet and did as told only a few would suffer.
However, while I love Katniss and the book, I can understand why people are not fond of the characters or the way other things were played out.

I completely agree. At first I was all for it, fangirling left and right. And then after a while I took a step back and really thought about the series. It was meh. I didn't see any character growth really. And there wasn't any happiness anywhere in that book. Everyone ended up miserable. Haymitch, still a drunk. Katniss's mother (can't member her name) lost Prim, Katniss lost Prim and Gale, Gale lost Katniss and sorta killed Prim, Peeta still had some remininsce of the hijacking. Which I completely hated. I don't like it when authors change the character's personality to have to compensate with not much plot and it's just so fake anyway. And Katniss's indecision between Gale and Peeta annoyed the bejeezus out of me.
So yeah, although I didn't say it as well as you did, I completely agree with you.
