Tanya (bookaholic22) When I'm browsing on goodreads every now and again, I always see these reading challenges and I'm intrigued by them. However when I look into them they always have too many books and I haven't seen many with 2 or 3 books and I find it hard to start somewhere when it comes to reading challenges. Can someone help me please? It would be much appreciated xx

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments hi Tanya

You could start with the pick-it-for-me (PIFM) challenge. It runs every month and while you get a variety of choices - you only have to read 1 book in the month.

For the monthly challenge - you can choose if you want to read 3, 5, 7 or 10 - so you could look at that.

Many of the other challenges run for a longer period of time, so they involve more books, but when broken down they only include 2-3 per month or so.

Hope this helps

Leeann (lwalkernutt) | 6 comments Can they be any book that you want to read?

message 4: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments hi Leeann

What challenge are you talking about? For the PIFM, you get 8 choices, normally half are new to you books/authors and half are from your TBR - so you have hopefully a good range to choose from

Other challenges are normally fairly broadly worded to allow you to fit a variety of books in

Leeann (lwalkernutt) | 6 comments Dee, I am so new to this web site that IDK what PIFM stands for, or TBR? Can you help me?

message 6: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments PIFM is our pick it for me challenge and we run it on a monthly basis. When you sign-up (and unfortunately, pairings for September are already done) - you are paired with another participant, and they provide you up to 8 recommendations - 4 new to you, and 4 off of your to-read list (TBR - to-be-read) - you in turn will be paired with someone else and provide them picks

Its a good way to either stretch your reading boundaries, or knock off a book that has been lingering on the pile

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Leeann - there are heaps of abbreviations floating around Goodreads! Anyone, in any thread, will be happy to sort out any confusion you may have ...either with the way it works, or for those abbreviations :)

Also, to clarify your earlier question just a fraction further - whilst we are a romance group focussed on challenges, you can read any genre to fit a category unless it is otherwise specified. Or, as Dee noted, it is the PIFM challenge where you are recommended specific books. :)

Leeann (lwalkernutt) | 6 comments Thank you Dee & Jane so much I can't wait till nxt month for the nxt pairing.

Makenzie (makenziefay) | 496 comments I enjoy the quarterly challenges as well. You get three months to ready anywhere from 4-15 books based on different themes (western, historical, paranormal, etc), with each book also meeting a different item from a list of criteria (new to you author, an ebook, part of a series, etc). The current quarterly challenge just began on Aug 15, running through Nov 15, so there's still plenty of time to jump in!

Good luck in your future challenges!

message 10: by Leeann (new)

Leeann (lwalkernutt) | 6 comments How do I get in on that challenge Makenzie?

message 11: by Makenzie (new)

Makenzie (makenziefay) | 496 comments Click here for the link to the challenge page. Check out the challenge and see if it's something you like. Look over the entries already posted to get an idea of some of the books being read.

Here is the discussion/FAQ page for the challenge which may also answer any questions you have about the challenge. You can pick from four levels of participation. I'm starting at the basic Flirt level of reading 4 books, but as I just finished my 4th book an hour ago, I'm going to see if I can reach the next level. :)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments Another challenge I've enjoyed is the Count Off challenge. Here's the thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

The idea is to read up the books you already own, without buying anything new. The winner gets to buy more books. (Of course, we're all adults and can buy books whenever. But it feels really good to get some of that TBR cleared up and feel like you've earned any new purchases.) You can jump in on this one any time, but a new one starts tomorrow, with a bonus for any cowboy themed books you read.

Aw man...I should have waited to finish my Cowboy book tomorrow.

Any book counts. You just get double pages for a cowboy book. So you can still participate, even if you don't have any cowboy books on your shelf. Also, the winner gets to pick the next challenge. People often link the challenge with something that's going on in the world-- like the cowboy challenge is because there's a big rodeo going on in Nebraska. But it's also perfectly acceptable to make, say a Timetravel challenge because you've got a lot of timetravel books on your shelf. (Yes, I am watching the Doctor Who marathon on BBC America today, why do you ask?)

message 15: by Leeann (new)

Leeann (lwalkernutt) | 6 comments Where do I list the books that I am going to read or have read?

message 16: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments you can list in the challenge thread - unless otherwise specified in the first post - you post as you go (or as you finish books). sometimes for bigger challenges we edit posts, but that is not often

message 17: by Leeann (new)

Leeann (lwalkernutt) | 6 comments So when I finish a book I just list it in the feed

message 18: by Debra (new)

Debra (countrymom6) | 166 comments Hi I'm new to this site and I love reading . Just joined the group as this is my first group I've ever joined for books and reading. I am thinking about the challenges. But I'm so new to this and as to how to get books and all I have a kindle app and Barnes and noble and a few other reading apps on my tablet but I would love to join so challenges and such as I am an avid reader and finish reading books with in 2-3 days or so. So any suggestions would be great. Thanks and sorry if I'm repeating already asked questions but I'm trying to clarify what I need to know thank you for any hello
Debra

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments hi Debra
Welcome to the group. With all the apps you have listed, you should be pretty set for locating books for challenges. One thing that we try to do is make sure that while there are guidelines for picking books, that they aren't exceptionally strict.

If you want some place to start, you could try the Pick it for Me challenge - sign-ups for October end tomorrow, so you would need to sign-up today. Or you could try the monthly challenge

message 20: by Cristal (new)

Cristal (latsirc825) | 13 comments I want to join the new challenge, but I'm not sure how to post my bookshelf on the discussion board. Do I just paste a link to it? HELP! Trying to make the deadline.

message 21: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments Hi Cristal, welcome to the group! It looks like you're probably talking about the Meet & Greet challenge, and if that's the case, yes, all you have to do is paste a link to the shelf you want your picks to come from. Don't worry about missing the deadline though - sign-ups are open until Nov. 19, so you still have lots of time. It's a great challenge...hope you enjoy it!

message 23: by Arys (new)

Arys (readeatlove) Hi! I'm Arys. I just joined GR yesterday and realized I missed the end date (1/17) to sign up for the Meet and Greet Challenge for Feb/Mar. Is it possible to still sign up? Or would I wait for the March/April?

Thanks so much!

message 24: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Arys - unfortunately becasue of the size there is no late signup for MnG - but our Feb Pick it for Me will be going live soon and its similar (but smaller) - but only have 1 person to pick for, but similar idea

message 25: by Erin (last edited Sep 26, 2015 08:04PM) (new)

Erin (dindrane) What is the best way to choose a book in a given genre and make sure it fits (realizing many books cross genre)? I'm preparing for the next Quarterly Challenge (my first try!), because I want to try some new-to-me genres, but that also means I'm not sure how to FIND good books in that genre.

NEVER MIND! Found a good answer in another thread. :D
