A Game of Thrones
question
Is it worth reading?

I really want to read this book! It's been in my book list for a very long time now. I read a lot of good reviews but I'm not sure if I will like it. I'm 17 and I'm into dystopian, sci fi and YA books. I need your opinion guys! is it worth reading?

I say give it a try. It is an amazing book and probably you'll at least one of the characters and hate others to death. I think it's a very complicated reading because the amount of characters playing a part is huge! I had to go back and forth before I was able to say who was who. But it wasn't long before I was hooked to it and I couldn't let go until I had finished reading it.
BOOK THREE IS THE BEST OF THE FIRST FOUR I READ. But the whole series is so enjoyable and all the books are essential for the whole. I hope Martin completes the series and soon because I cant wait!!!

Of course it is! I recomend you to see the first season of series Game of Thrones before, because there are a lot of characters and at the begining is quite dificult to follow the story. I did it and it makes me so easy to understand what was going on. Anyway the plot is amazing, and right now there are 5 books written (there are supose to be 7) so you'll have a lot to read.

For sure worth the read!
I read mysteries and some fiction but never, ever science fiction or fantasy but when the hype of this grew and grew and grew, I got curious and thought I'd buy the first book and at least try it because if all these people are raving about this series, it must be somewhat good.
I devoured it! I fell in love with the characters to the point where I dreamed of them.
Give it a go, I find it unlikely you'll be disappointed!

I disagree with just about everyone except for the comments about keeping the characters straight. Someone gave me this book as a gift, knowing that I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Going into it with that expectation was setting it up to fail, in my mind. I just persevered through it since it was a gift.
I read the books at the same time the TV show was on. Season 1 - book 1.. season 2 book 2. I will have the 3rd book finished by the time the 3rd season starts. love the books and the TV show. I'm giving away a copy of book 1 here on my blog - http://paradox-theangelsarehere.blogs...
For me the first three books are amazing. Storm of Swords may be one of the best fantasy books I've read, but the next two are a little tedious although still worth the read. George R.R. Martin is a master storyteller and his ability to weave a tight story is unparalleled. His use of foreshadowing is wonderful as well!
Of this book and the series is worth reading. The book is packed with mixed emotions. It's an epic tale of Seven Kingdoms and the best part is the brilliant and flawless plot structure.
i definitely recommend reading all of them. the first season stayed pretty true to the first book. the second season used things from the second and third. i'm almost finished with the 4th book and i do have to say that the 3rd book so far (in my opinion) is THE best! it is a complete page turner. i love the whole series and it has become my new obsession. love love love this series!!!
These kind of books weren't exactly my style either. After hearing so much about them and the show (which I wasn't watching either at the time) and seeing them in the bookstore I decided to pick up the first book and give it a try. It literally sat in my house for a month or so before I grudgingly picked it up. I think the fact that it wasn't my normal genre as well as the length were a bit of a deterrent to me but by the end of the prologue I was hooked. I devoured the first book then went back and bought the next three in paperback. I got a kobo version of the fifth book (I don't do hardcover) and then when I realized there were two more books and how long he takes to write a book I was devasted. So I read the first five again. I've watched both seasons of the television show and will probably re-read all five books a third time before the sixth comes out. The story hooks you in so much that even when you're not reading it you're thinking about it. It's now my favourite series and I'm thinking about trying out some of George R.R. Martin's other books to see if they're as good. I think Fevre Dream is next on my To Be Read list.

Definitely! It captures the imagination. Loved the first three (just starting the fourth)
Absolutely worth reading!!!!
Although it has been marketed as "fantasy" genre fiction, it has elements of many others: historical fiction, mystery, and suspense.
It has a ~ton~ of characters--both in each volume and the series as a whole--but the author has thankfully provided notes at the end to keep them straight.
It should also be noted that the TV series does ~not~ follow a strict division of the volumes (Book 1 = Season 1, etc.) ... the series is more fluid in its interpretation of the material :)

i'm reading book one. Never thought I'd like it but I do. not my genre either.
Very definitely worth reading. It does have some problems, in particular it's so complicated that I often have trouble remembering who some character is and, especially, what happened last to him or her. But it's such a detailed and, apart from the magic, realistic tapestry thet I find it fascinating. I would give it 5 stars in a review, and it deserves its reputation as a classic.
I think these books are definitely worth a shot - I have read all but the latest release and am really looking forward to reading that one.
In the later books a lot more characters get introduced and it can be a bit difficult to keep them all straight but I have read worse books than these. I would also agree that the writing style is a bit different from a lot of authors typical fare but then every authors style is different when you think about it!

Absolutely, it's one of the best books I've ever read. Not the best in the series, but still brilliant.
After you read this you'll struggle to get excited about any other fantasy. It really is that good.
I think it's worth it. I read it because my husband really wanted me to, and I don't do fantasy or series, like ever. But I really liked it. I told him I'd give it 50 pages, and I was pretty well hooked by then. The other commenter is right, it does slow down a lot toward the end. I watched S1 of the series while I read, only watching up to what I'd read. I don't plan on ever reading the rest of the series as it's just not my thing, but it was a nice diversion.
This books is definitely worth reading. I finished book 3 earlier this year and I just picked up book 4.
This series is so worth reading!! The books are incredible. They are very detailed and you feel as though you are there doing and seeing the things the characters are experiencing. At times they are very graphic. Well worth buying and reading!
This book is so worth it. I have literally tore through every one of his novels!
The way I tell people who are interested in this book is to watch the first season and start reading the second book afterwards. The first season follows the first book almost to a T, while the second season leaves out a lot of stuff, and changes a lot of things around.
It definitely won't be the kind of book you're used to. It's very "realistic"..lol I almost quit a couple times because it made me so mad when he killed off important characters..it really is an amazing series though. You just have to get used to his writing. Definitely worth giving it a try.
this book wasnt in the kind of genre that i typicaly read i really didnt think it was gonna be good, but it got voted for our book of the month one time in our book club so i read it because i read anything voted in so it kinda helps me branch out of my comfort zone, and ill tell ya i loved it!! and i was so glad i made myself read it. You should definantly try it out.
YES!! I felt the same before reading the series. They are now my favorite books. The character development is the best I've ever read.
it's starts well but about 20 pages from the end of the first book it turns to sludge
book 2 continues in the sludge manner and i never bothered beyond that
