Christine (cdunbar) | 635 comments No. We start a new challenge as soon as someone reaches the goal. So since you won, you get to come up with the challenge, reward, goal, etc.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Heather wrote: "Thanks. Do we just keep reading until the time is up?"

And go ahead and post it as soon as you're ready so those reading tonight or tomorrow can have their pages count. The book I finished tonight... oh well. Doesn't count now. lol

message 4206: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) Do I have to give the reward? Or is it what we give ourselves?

message 4207: by Christine (new)

Christine (cdunbar) | 635 comments It's what you give yourself so that you can still buy books while participating in a challenge without having to reset to zero.

@Kate - It can count for whatever challenge Heather comes up with.

Heather T (horrorvacui000) Van Gogh Challenge
On December 23, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh got in a fight with his friend and fellow painter Gauguin. In a fit of dementia, Van Gogh threatened his friend with a knife before turning it on himself and mutilating his ear lobe. Afterward, he allegedly wrapped up the ear and gave it to a prostitute at a nearby brothel. Following that incident, Van Gogh was hospitalized in Arles and then checked himself into a mental institution in Saint-Remy for a year. During his stay in Saint-Remy, he fluctuated between periods of madness and intense creativity, in which he produced some of his best and most well-known works, including Starry Night and Irises.
Duration: Dec 17-Dec 29
Goal: 3,950 pages
Reward: 2 Hardbacks or 5 Paperbacks
Bonus: Double pages if the story you're reading is about an artist or architect, or about someone who suffers from depression. Triple points if the book is actually about Van Gogh.

message 4209: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) Let me know if I did that right please! Sorry I didn't check earlier. I've been really sick today. First time I've ever been poisoned by the food I ate. I was always addicted to McDonald's, but I've officially written the company off today.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Nice challenge Heather. I love Starry Night.

Christine (cdunbar) | 635 comments Question: Does a graphic design artist count as an artist? Or are we talking painters only?

message 4214: by Heather (last edited Dec 16, 2010 10:37PM) (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) I like some of his darker stuff. I really like his Smoking Skeleton - When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris and a few others that really aren't well known, but was never a die hard Van Gogh fan. I like Greek, Roman, Renaissance and Neo-Classisism more than modern stuff. Reading Lust for Life by Irving Stone was great because it helped me develop an appreciation for him that I didn't have when I was first introduced to his stuff. I like the paradox between people putting his stuff on their walls because of the pretty churches, when he's frequently commenting on how it's a closed off institution that doesn't welcome people easily. (He wanted to be a priest, but they esentially took away his collar and kicked him out so that underlies a lot of his stuff.)
Sorry, obsessive art history freak.

message 4215: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) Totally counts. It doesn't have to be "fine" art.

message 4216: by ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (last edited Dec 16, 2010 10:44PM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Heather wrote: "Sorry, obsessive art history freak."

My mother is a professional watercolor artist and I went to school 2 years for graphic design, so I definetly understand the art history stuff. I've been meaning to read The Agony and the Ecstasy: A Biographical Novel of Michelangelo by Irving Stone. It's a beautiful movie starring Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison if you get a chance to ever see it. It's the story between the pope and Michelangelo over the painting of the sistine chapel ceiling. Michelangelo considered himself a sculpture not a painter.

message 4217: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) That's cool Kate. I could never create anything, but I love history and the scandel behind the scenes that no one really hears about and artists are the equivelent of drama queens so the stories are great. All the male "size matters" contests, the artist who got the nun posing for his Virgin Mary pregnant...

message 4218: by Heather (last edited Dec 16, 2010 10:56PM) (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) I read that in high school and it's one of my favorite books. The book actually covers his whole life, although the movie is geared to the Sistine. Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling is good if that's the time period you want to focus on, but I liked the Stone book better since it covers the Medici. Michelangelo's one of my favorite creators and I'm a bit obsessive about the Medici family and Florence in general (although he got trapped in Rome a lot). Irving Stone is great for getting you emotionally involved in history.

message 4219: by ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (last edited Dec 16, 2010 10:53PM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) The only copy of The Agony & The Ectasy I have is unfortunately a Reader's Digest Condensed book. I do however, have a copy of Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling as well but havn't read either one yet. It's one of those that I want to get around to reading, but never seem to find the time and it doesn't fit any challenges. Probably not a quick read either. I didn't know if the movie was based off Irving Stone's book or not. I don't remember from watching the movie if it says in the credits.

(Off to bed but sent you a friend request)

message 4220: by Heather (last edited Dec 16, 2010 10:57PM) (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) It's not that bad. Brunelleschi's Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture is much more detailed and bogged down with engineering. It's short, but it's an effort to read through. Michelangelo's moves faster. Although, A&E reads faster being fictional, it's a lot longer and would take me more time to read than the factual one. I need to read the rest of Stone's books. A lot are out of print except for a small few. Have you tried the library?

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I live in a small town. We have a nice library but the library is limited in what it has. I don't remember if it has this or not. And my particular library charges for inter-library loan.

Yes. lol Ages ago I volunteered to help out and now I do the leaderboard all the time. I have it set to email me whenever anyone posts so I usually can update it pretty regularly. I do it often enough that after updating the leaderboard, I usually delete the older one to it won't clog up the thread. I just add whatever anyone posts since my last leaderboard update, so I don't have to scan backwards a page or two. Easier that way. So just post an update with any new books/pages.
