Can I use library books as long as no books are purchased during timeframe?
Do I have to list the books at the beginning of the challenge?
I just started hanging out here in past couple days but I know that the last 2 books I read were started no earlier than May 1st can I use them?

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Hey E - welcome - you can jump into the challenges at anytime - you don't need to list the books you are going to read through-out; if you have some that you started on May 1, you are good - or even if you have 1 in progress before that and can guesstimate where you are you can list it! i'm not sure about library books though!

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments GM all! Hi E! About Library books. Since they aren't a purchase, you can use them =D You can use/count pre-orders that you have purchased previously and come in on a current challenge, since you won't know the exact date they will arrive.

It is the actual act of buying books during those dates listed on the challenge, that makes you forfeit pages and reset.

message 2365: by ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (last edited May 07, 2010 09:49AM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I only list extra pages, if I read them. Since I never read the excerpt of another story, I don't. If you've got the correct edition of the book choosen (if available) on goodreads, the page count of your book will match what's listed on Goodreads. Or it should. Personally, I just use the last page number in my book, last page of the story. If it ends on page 369, then I use 369. If you have introduction pages (marked iv, etc.) that aren't in the regular page count, and you read them, by all means add them. You just count the pages you've read, so the extra excerpt pages only count if you read them.

Macwolf01 wrote: "Stephanie Laurens lists all the books in her two major series at the end of this edition so there were lots of extra pages :0)"

It sounds like you're referring to the advertising pages at the end of the book and those don't count. Those are the pages listing other books for sale.

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 4413 comments Anna Jarvis created the Mother's Day International Association in 1912, trademarking "2nd Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day". Although the date was changed in some countries to fit already existing celebrations honoring motherhood, (like Mothering Sunday in the UK), 75+ countries have adopted the 2nd Sunday in May, so I've used that date in figuring the page goal. According to the perpetual calendar, the 2nd Sunday in 1912 was on May 12. So for page goal I used 1912+5+12+2010+5+9 =3,953. Here's the new challenge:

May is for Mothers and Remembrance
Duration: May 7th - 22nd
Goal: 3,953 pages
Reward: 3 new books or 8 used ones
Bonus: Double pages if your mother's name is in the title, part of the author's name,or the name of a main character, OR if the word 'mother' or 'mom' is in the title.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Her name is "Dora" so that isn't an easy one to find in books, short of Dora the Explorer children's books from the library. If I have time after challenge books, I know I have books with mother in the title. Oh wait, she did edit another book: Impact: The Art of Nebraska Women. I got that somewhere. lol See if I can't dig that up.

Yep, it counts if you send or receive, and a mother is a mother, so stepmoms count, and I'll include mother-in-law as well, with this condition: you must settle on one for the bonus (example: my mother's name is Margaret & mother-in-law's name is Florence. I have to choose one and stick to it) Also, common variations of the name are OK, so Maggie would be an acceptable use of Margaret.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) My two boys made me mothers day presents. Danny (10) drew me a card with flowers on it. And Levi (13) made me out of construction paper, colored flowers and a vase. (He did a great job of making a paper rose!). And Danny asked to go to sunday school tomorrow as last week they said they'd have flowers for them to give their mom's. And my little guy, Nathan (5), brought me home a small flower potted in a cup from his royal rangers meeting on Wed. I got sweet kids. :)

Unapologetic_Bookaholic | 2002 comments The BIG 2500 What's this? Another mini challenge? Well somewhat. I love that this challenge is still going strong 16 months after the first post!

To commemorate the 2500th post [and reminders are appreciated, lol:]. I'll grant a book wish to the person who posts it.
