I've signed up for a challenge in all my groups... that's like 8 challenges for 7 groups. lol To complete everything I'd have to read 15 books this month. I've found a few novella's or short stories to help, but only a couple (and some are still 40-50 pages). And I'm still left with 15 books, one of which is around 600 pages. But as I suggested it as a group read, I get to lead the discussion so no getting out of reading it. lol

600! I ten to stay away from those as monthly reads. I get stuck in wanting to read ONLY those because they are all engrossing. Swan Song is 956 pages but I have read it before so I just read bits here and there. I hope you succeed in all your challenges, Kate! That's a lot!

I have no idea if I'll succeed. I've cross challenged as many books as I can. Then again, I'm reading quite a few series books too. I've worked in 3 Dresden Files books, 4 from the Argeneau series, the final book from the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (read other 3 last month but waited for this one to arrive off PBS), the Sookie new release is on the list once my preorder arrives, and I put the Debbie Macomber new release on the list (I'm first on library's waiting list). So hopefully it won't be too bad.

The 600 page book, where I'm leading the discussion starting May 15th, so better get it started ASAP, lol, is Battle Royale by Koushun Takami, translated from the original Japanese.

Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing.

Part of the reason it looked interesting (besides the fact my oldest is in 7th grade, same as the contestants lol) is that every kid was given a pack on the island with a weapon. Every kid got a different weapon. Those reviewing the book here on GRs said the weapons range from an AK47 to a voilin.

And yeah, it's a cubby chunkster for me. :)

I never read Lord of the Flies. What it reminds me of is the Stephen King/Bachman book, The Long Walk. Since I found this interesting years ago, I figured Battle Royale would be good. The Japanese liked it so much they made a movie out of the book.

In the near future, a young boy is selected to take the Long Walk-a deadly contest of endurance and determination, in which each step can be your last.

In that one, young boys from around the nation volunteer to take part in this contest. You must walk non-stop. If you go too slow, stop, or go off the road, you get a warning. Third warning you get shot dead. Last boy to survive wins like a million dollars.

I just read Undead and Unwed last month, I really couldn't get into Betsy at all, she seemed really shallow. She made comments about people too harshly that made me think the author has some pent up anger towards different individuals that seeped into her writing. I don't think I'll continue, but if you do BJ, I'd love to hear if it gets drastically better in later books.
