Rosemary and Rue is a first book in a series, but, despite that handicap is still enjoyable. BUT--it is UF and NOT PNR. If you don't like UF you probably won't like this book. And it takes the "classic" view of the Fae--they are tricky, treacherous, not to be trusted but inhumanly beautiful. If you want the Tolkien type of Fae--don't bother reading this book.

This may be a dumb question...but what IS the difference between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. I've read some in both and they seem pretty similar to me...

I am a horrible person to answer your question because most days I don't know either. However, here it what I do know. Both have paranormal or supernatural elements to them. PNR is Paranormal Romance, and has a HEA (Happy Ever After). So the Harlequin Nocture line of books featuring for example romances with werewolves would be PNR because they always have a HEA ending. Urban Fantasy doesn't have to be a romance, and has a more contemprary setting. Say werewolves in NYC. I think the Dresden Files series is considered UF even though it's set in 1930s Chicago (where a vampire is an undead PI).
Books like Sookie Stackhouse seem to defy categories since it blurs the lines around so many. It's shelved in bookstores under Mystery since that's the big plot in most of the series. Even though there is a romance in the books she doesn't always have a HEA, definetly paranormal and supernatural elements and even a contemporary setting.
Clear as mud? lol I'm not a good person to explain this.

according to my herbal--its a pinescented herb used for cooking and healing. Appearantly it also has some kind of teeny, tiny, itsy bitsy flower, but that's not what's used for anything. Rue is also a word that means to regret, so I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew that it was not the "regret" kind of rue.

This might be a dumb question - but will requesting or borrowing a book from the library reset my page count?
Nairabell wrote: "This might be a dumb question - but will requesting or borrowing a book from the library reset my page count?"No, library books are fine. Getting a wish granted at paperbackswap won't either since you can't predict when it will come in. The idea was basically not to spend any money acquiring books. My dad gave me 5 harlequins he'd finished reading yesterday. Since they were a gift, I don't have to reset my page counts. Lately I've had to go to the library to fill gaps in series, or find series I don't have, so I'm right there with ya Nairabell.
Brilliant! I've never bothered requesting books from my local library because it's pretty expensive, but now I've been registered as disabled I don't have to pay. Chances are I'll be requesting a lot of books :)
Checking out books at my local library is free. I can check their card catalog online aas well as check my account, including reserving books so I'm on the waiting list or even renewing books. The only thing that costs money at my library, which is free elsewhere, is inter-library loan. My library charges $1.50 for that. This is where they borrow a book from another library that they don't have. I figure why pay $1.50 or so to borrow a book for 3 weeks (can't renew) when many times I can buy it used off amazon's marketplace for a penny plus $3.99 postage. I do wish they'd get rid of the interlibrary loan fee here. I know others here on GRs use it extensively and their library doesn't charge for it.
Ooops - I should have said it's free to borrow and renew books from my library, but if they don't have it on the shelf when you walk in you have to pay to request it. It's 90p (I'm in the UK) from within the borough, or £5.90 from outside it, so I too have ordered from amazon for a penny plus £2.75 postage. The main problem with requests is that a couple of times in the past I've paid to request a book, only to get a letter from the library saying that they won't get hold of it or I've had to wait for ages - in one case for well over a year!
Nairabell, I can feel for you over the waits. I've been on the waiting list for Kitty and the Midnight Hour for SEVEN MONTHS now--and am still only #6. The really weird thing is--I've gotten all the rest of the Kitty books, just that one for some reason seems to be really hard to get. But I'm hanging in there, sooner or later it WILL get here. :o) I don't pay to reserve books here, but if I use an interlibrary loan then I am required to pay the postage. Some of the Interlibrary Loan books can be renewed, others can't. It seems to depend on the library that owns the books. (Shrugging) what can you do, just put up with them, right?
oops, almost forgot why I came in here. (To post my newest page count, of course.) :oPBuddha's Birthday Flowers Challenge

Yep - if you don't want to buy a book, a library's pretty much the only option. Unless of course you're my mother - in which case you just bug me till I hand over the book you want! :) At the moment she's swiped the first two of Maria V. Snyder's study books, which is worrying as I'm only halfway through the last one so if I leave it lying around it'll get swiped!
Nairabell wrote: "Yep - if you don't want to buy a book, a library's pretty much the only option. But quite frequently, they won't have a single book by an author I like. In that case, I'm forced to buy them (used online) or wait til I can find them at a thrift shop or paperback swap. What's REALLY annoying is the library having an entire series, with one book missing somewhere in the middle of it!
I hate that! I was looking to pick up the BDB books as I own Dark Lover - but they have 1 and then 4 onwards. Soooo mean :(
There is one series I got interested to read. Forensic anthropolisit Gideon Oliver by Aaron Elkins. Starts with Fellowship of Fear, and has 12 books or so in the series. The library has the entire series... except for book one! So I found book 1 at paperbackswap and will read the rest from the library.

We get charged for ILL. Although I haven't had to pay for any of the fees. I am a volunteer there though.
The only way I'd be tempted to pay the InterLibrary Loan (ILL) fees is if I can't find the book used at a reasonable price. If I just HAD to read it, lol, and my library didn't have it, and I couldn't find it affordably used... then $1.50 for the ILL fees would be worth it. So far... hasn't happened yet. lol

Magic Study was a bit slower than the others, but wow did Fire Study not let up at all! I really want to read the Glass series too, but given how I lept from one book to another in this series I think I'm going to wait till the final part is out. Otherwise I'll just irritate everyone while I wait for it :)

I don't pay to reserve books, I receive email notifications when reserved books are in and when books are due, so I don't accidentally have overdue books, I can reserve and renew online, AND my branch library is open 7 days a week! I am truly blessed. We do also have ILL, but decided if I'm going to pay for a book, I'll try to find it used, or decide if I want it badly enough to go ahead and pay full price. OH, and we don't have an annual subscription fee, as I've discovered some rural communities have - that was a surprise to me, as I thought all public libraries in the U.S. had to have free access, altho they can of course have requirements for who can check books out (live locally, etc)
I love my library too Ann. I own alot of books but check out DVDs and some books there, and my kids love it too. Doesn't cost me anything as long as I avoid Interlibrary loan and like you can do alot online. :)

I'll post a new one later today after I have time to do a little research. (So everyone go hit those yard sales, thrift stores etc and stock up.)
Congrats Ann!!I did get my shopping in this morning. :)
At the church used book sale I spent $11. I got:
Class Rachel Ray 30 minute meals (hardback)
Taste of Home's Casserole Cookbook (hardback)
America's Favorite Brand Name Light Cooking (hardback)
Forget Me Not/Beautiful Dreamer (2-in-1) by Elizabeth Lowell
Skipping Christmas by John Grisham
Return to Witch Mountain (Disney) by Alexander Key
At Last...Donny! by James Gregory (Biography of Donny Osmond)
Cliff Notes on Victor Hugo's Les Miserables
Springwater Seasons by Linda Lael Miller (4 novels)
(2-in-1)Pursuit of the Mountain Man/Blood on the Divide(The First Mountain Man) by William W Johnstone
(2-in-1)Never Say Goodbye & Crossroads by Irene Hannon
Night's Landing by Carla Neggers
The Wedding Dress by Kimberly Cates
Home Fires by Luanne Rice
Comfort and Joy (Anthology) by Fern Michaels
The Lost Tomb by David Gibbins ("What do you get if you cross Indiana Jones with Dan Brown? David Gibbins.")
And my son picked out: How to draw animals, how to draw horses, how to draw cats & kittens and a Nickelodeon magazine with Spongebob.
Now, at a garage sale that advertised audio books on CD... I got the following for a grand total of $18. (Works out to $1.38 per audioCD book):
By Sue Grafton
A is for Alibi (still sealed in plastic)
B is for Burglar (picked up 2 of these)
C is for Corpse
N is for Noose
T is for Trespass
S is for Silence
K is for Killer
R is for Ricochet
U is for Undertow
Killer Heat by Linda Fairstein
By Louis L'Amour
Down Sonora Way/Strange Pursuit
More Brains than Bullets/The Road to Casas Piedras/West of Dodge
I don't have U is for Undertow, so definetly keeping that but the rest of the Sue Grafton's will end up on PaperbackSwap where I get 2 books credits for each one.
Forgot that he gave me another audiobook CD free. It's School Days by Robert B. Parker.
Ann aka Iftcan wrote: " (So everyone go hit those yard sales, thrift stores etc and stock up.) "I, for one, plan to do that very thing! Audible has a sale that's on its last day, so off I go! And I think I'll swing by the library and see what goodies they have in their Friends-of-Library store.
Congratulations, Ann. Well-won!!
