Just so I'm clear, can books that were started before the current challenge count toward the total of pages read, provided that we're only counting pages read since the challenge started? Thanks :)
Yes Michelle. For example, you were on page 50 of a 200 page book when the current challenge started. Once you finish it, you can claim 150 pages.
Briansgirl "Master Book Sale Huntress" wrote: "Yes Michelle. For example, you were on page 50 of a 200 page book when the current challenge started. Once you finish it, you can claim 150 pages. "Ok thanks. It's expected to snow here in my area this weekend, or so I've heard. That's all the excuse I need to stay in and read. Is it sad that I'm excited?
I just have one question in the rules it says e-books count from BOM, I'm still catching on to all this shorthand stuff so could you tell me what BOM stands for? Thanks
BOM = book of the monthAnd we do count ebooks. As various ereaders have different page counts (some with tiny screens), the general concensus is to use the page count for the paper book edition so that the pages would be the same regardless of which edition you use. Same for an audiobook. Just use whatever page count GRs lists for the book.
Thanks Brainsgirl i'm still new to this site and slowly catching on to a lingo. I will definately have to give this challenge a try next time around.
Your free to join us any time Kat. If you buy a book, just reset your page count to zero and jump back in.
oh i will definately join in, this sounds like a really fun challenge, but since there is only about a week left I think I wait until the next challenge starts that way I can start fresh!

Kate: The thing about using the GR page count is they are counting the per page count. We count both sides of the page. So whatever the page count in whatever format is OK to use. Audio[what I do:] is formulate a 1min per page count. So 2 hours is 120 pages.
I am glad I know now you were counting like this. You count both sides in Paperback. E-books you use the page count as is [Abobe has a regular page count:]. Audio you can formulate according to how fast you read a page then calc the the mins. -OR- use your method =D It's all about whatever works really. But the guidelines[#1 post:]are there to make it universal. It's up to each individual to keep track how they want to for the challenge.
I disagree Kenjii. If my book is 260 pages, that's counting each side of the page and if you have the correct version of the book on goodreads, then the page count will match the book you're reading. I disagree with the way you're counting audiobooks. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (book 4) is 734 pages. The audiobook (on cassette) is 20 hours and 52 minutes, or 1252 minutes. By your calculations of 1 min = 1 page, you'd take 1252 pages credit, which is 518 pages higher than what the actual book is. And previously you took credit once for 1055 pages for an ereader book (Fantasy Lover) that had only 337 some pages listed in GRs for the paper version. That is a discrepancy that is way too far off. As far as I'm concerned, I've been extremely accurate in my page counts. I turn to the last page in my book (that isn't a preview of another book) and use whatever page number is listed.
Yeah. I didn't quite understand how they were counting the pages in that e-reader but I have always used the format to count pages. I don't often use audio books, but using your best judgement and the guidelines has been working thus far. That is why I sometimes list the format with the p/c.
Kenjii wrote: "I don't often use audio books, but using your best judgement and the guidelines has been working thus far.Thing is Kenjii, it isn't working for me. I know some of you read faster than I do, but I think the page counts are off enough in places to not make it fair. I've seriously considered several times dropping out of the count off challenge for good.

Well Kate I've always said from the very beginning if you want me to change the guidlines, let me know. I want this to be a challenge, but I want it to be fun for all. Let me know what you'd like me to do =D.
I think it would be fair to use the printed edition page counts. If there is only an ebook available, then obviously you have to use the ebook page count. That way ebooks or audiobooks don't count any more than a printed book. Obviously, printed editions vary by edition, but this would in my opinion, make all books equal. In other words you'd get the same page count regardless of wether it's a printed book, ebook, or audiobook.
I don't read ebooks, so I have no idea what standard is used for pages, but I do 'read' lots of audiobooks, and always look up the print version on Goodreads or Amazon for # of actual pages in the book. I do know from experience that a certain # of minutes does not always give me the same # of pages, so when I'm 'guesstimating' how many pages I've read (for a status report on my reading - "I'm currently on page ___") I divide the total pages by the # of hours in the audiobook to reach a reasonable page # (400/14=28 pp. per hr for the book I just finished). Sometimes it's more, sometimes less - I guess because of size of print and size of page, but it seems to be fairly close to 1/2 minute = one page. The Harry Potter book that Kate mentioned works out to 35 pp. per hour, but all us HP readers know that the print size is a bit larger than the average book! When I post here, I'll continue using actual # of pages of the version I'm listening to (I go by the bookcover to guide me with that). Don't know if this helps or not.

400 pp: The Deeds of the Disturber by Elizabeth Peters Dec. 4 3.5*
This one was not as good as the previous ones, but still much better than average. My biggest problem here is that Amelia did a lot of whining about 'maybe' being betrayed by the love of her life. It was just too contrived for me.

Since the idea of the challenge is to keep us from buying books during the challenge. I think that keeping count as we have been is fine. As an option I will add to the guideline that using the printed edition page count for e-books and audio books is OK.
I'm out (or reset to zero). I bought used today copies of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Candy Cane Murder.
Thanks for your explanation BJ. I know with all these formats there are formulas we all use. The core of the Count Off challenge has basically been paperback, so yeah. The p/c overall will be paperback.

I just stick to whatever it says on GR for page counts even if I read an ebook which can sometimes have double the number of pages as a print book. Even in that situation I always use the page count of a print book and I also use this for audio books. I always aim to be as fair to all other participants as possible. I also avoid using partial reads unless I used it to win a challenge and then it's the first book I finish as the start of the next challenge.

I'm out. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of Magic in the Wind (Drake Sisters, #1) by Christine Feehan for a while. It's out of print and the used copies that I found online were pretty expensive. Anywhere from $20 and up, for a used book that has $2.99 stamped on the front! Then, someone suggested bookdepository.com and I found it there for $1.48 + free shipping, and I couldn't resist. I'll be sure to get in on the next one. Have fun!

another question....is it ok to use the page count on ebooks that are only sold in ebook format? i just want to be clear on the rules before I take part because I do read a lot of ebooks. Thanks
