Finally finished this monster - I read it for the Fall Challenge. I actually liked the book, but I had to take it slow so my mind could handle all the historical people and events. I'm only claiming the pages I've read since the Thanksgiving Challenge started

I joined it partly to 'force' me to read more in other genres that I had been ignoring. I would not have been able to do it while I was still working an outside job and raising my kids, so I am in absolute awe of those who do. I think I like the challenge of finding books that fit each task, whether I expect to actually read them all or not.

Dual Challenge Face Off!I'll see if this is pleasure or pain. Double the fun =D.

****NEW***
Winter's Night Challenge::Start 11-24-09::End 12-8-09::# of pages 1,200::Reward 2 new or 3 used books!
I will start a totally new challenge off here for this group. Twice the chance to win. Only rule is you HAVE to post different books. Can't use same page counts. My idea is to keep track by listing your books in the thread and linking the title for easy searching. Any questions? Will be posting @ RRRC as well =D.
Start posting those pages now!

I won't be taking part in the Dual challenges. In 11 months of being on GRs, I've managed to win the count off challenge only once. There is no way I can split my page counts between two challenges and be competitive in either. One is enough for me. I won't try to complicate it by splitting them up. I find one difficult enough.
I want to see if there will be any participation in the COC in the other group. So joining the challenges was an idea. It is harder splitting the books between two challenges. Worth a shot though.
I'm out. I bought a few books today. I had to drive 250 miles to drop my kids off for Thanksgiving visitation and we stopped by the catholic thrift shop down in Kansas. Used books there are either $1 each for newer romances (didn't get those). What I got were the old paperbacks, 25 cents each or 10/$1. I got 10, of course. On the way outa town I discovered a new used bookstore, so of course, had to drop in. I only got one book for $2.50 from the back of the store as it's a sequel to a book I read last month. I stuck to the bargain bookcases at the front of the store where used beatup books were 25 cents each. Ended up with 38 books for $11 plus tax (roughly). I saved my lunch money to use for buying books and ate a lunchbox sandwich in the car instead. One of the books I got for a quarter (in almost new condition) is Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I picked up a few old romances for Read my Lifetime challenge. I got several E authors and U titles for Read the Month challenges next year. Got another Agatha Christie, four Louis L'Amour, a Zane Grey, etc. Alot of the covers on the ancient books aren't in good condition for a quarter, but still readable for a cheap price which is all that counts.
Wow well done Kate. I really enjoyed Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen which I read a week ago. Hope you enjoy it. I plan to hit the used bookstores in the UK when I go over for Christmas lol.

When I added Water for Elephants I noticed you had a review up of it so read that. It sounds good. I don't know when I'll get to it. Might save it til it fits a challenge category. It's hard to find time to read books that don't fit into challenge categories anymore. *sigh*

I have a question. Although I doubt it'll ever happen (I mean, you all seem to be some very, very fast readers!), but what'll happen if no one reaches the required number of pages read for the current challenge?
Whoever is ahead when the challenge ends wins. And Michelle... I'm not that fast a reader. In 11 months, I've won the count off challenge once. But I still take part.

I've decided to be less self indulgent and not buy any books for the month of December and I think doing the count off challenge will help. I'll be watching for the start of the next one. Thanks Briansgirl!
There is no rush, we can give the rest of today to finish up the challenge. The lead player can post a new challenge by 8 PM [their local time:].

Jane, you must be feeling miserable! Hope it's better soon!!Unless someone else zooms ahead of you, you're the winner of this challenge!
Welcome, Michelle! This is as much for the fun of sharing what we're reading (Briansgirl introduced us to the Maria Snyder 'Study' trilogy, and I'm loving them), and as a personal challenge (can I resist buying those books?!) And those books you plan on NOT buying in December can so easily go on your "all-I-want-for-Christmas" list!!
