These are YA books, so they read quickly and I've been sick for four days so little else to do but read. Even a short trip to the library (my book was missing the last page! - then again it was a really old copy from 1947) wore me out today. I only checked out the last book above, and only had the first 3 in the series myself, so now have to find something else to read.

Thanks Becky. Having nothing else to do but read or watch daytime tv (as I've been sick), I was reading. And the books flowed together as if you were reading one book. And being YA books, they read easily. It was interesting for me to learn that The Black Stallion, written by Walter Farley, was the first book in a series of 19 written by the same author from 1941 to 1983, and then the series was continued on from there by his son. The stories start out about a young boy and the horse who saved each other, boy being a teenager. By the second book, he was starting his first year of college. I learned the author wrote the first book as a teenager, on paper at his parents dining room table in 1941 and he got it published as he started college. So he could very convincingly write a YA novel being a YA himself!
Now off to re-read A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkenss. The second in the trilogy comes out this summer and I wanted to reread it before then as I've forgotten alot since I read it last year. But, it was my favorite read of 2011, so going to enjoy rereading. My paperback edition though is 579 pages!
Edited: Decided to go for a quick Harlequin first, as it's a pick-it-4-me book for the month. Doubt it'll take long. lol
Somehow I missed reading The Black Stallion as a kid. I'll have to get to it one of these days. Really cool about the background of the story!I loved A Discovery of Witches, too. I won an advance copy through GR last year and was super excited about it. The second book doesn't come out until like July, so we've still got a ways to go. :(
I'd never read The Black Stallion series either. I read Trixie Beldon mysteries. I did however, watch the movies and have copies I've shown my boys. Now I'll see if I can interest any of them in reading the books.I read the libraries hardcopy of A Discovery of Witches last year. It was the BOM in another group I'm in for last month, to get ready for this summer's next installment. I liked it enough to buy my own copy once it was out in paperback. I've already reserved the libraries new release (first on the list!) for when it comes out this summer.

I read quite a few of the Black Stallion books when I was in grade school, but didn't know that Farley's son continued the series - I apparently moved on to other things! At the time my reading consisted of books I could get in the school or public library. I also remember reading the Big Red books by Jim Kjelgaard - what can I say, I grew up on a farm and loved animals.

NOTE: I'm going to assume that my book fits the category, as it's all about a boy and his horse, each saving the others life multiple times, then competing in a horse race together.
