BJ Rose: I have started trying to FINISH my reads and posting them instead of partial reads b/c keeping track of partials is hard! It is great doing this b/c I am really controlling my book buying. It is sad posting 1-2 books next to 20 plus book buys in the first week of the month! LOL!

Total: 59 pages
That's great BG =D glad to see you back in. I am [re:] reading Halfway to the Grave tonight. I am so loving it!
I picked that book up in Kansas City at Books-a-Million when we were there for the funeral. Needed a break and she lived less than 3 miles from a huge mall. I have to drive 90 miles to get to one of the large chain bookstores that have discounts. That book was on sale for $2.97. I read some of it on the way home from the funeral as Dad drove, half of it while in waiting rooms, and part at home. It's non-fiction, all lil stories 2-4 pages each.

Good to see you getting back to yourself, Briansgirl :) Reading can be a great comfort -
Yikes! Having to drive 90 miles for book bargains - I'd be doing all my book-buying online!!

Total = 668 pages
Jane wrote: "I have the Strawberry Shortcake Murder in my TBR pile but not sure when I'll get around to it."Not sure if this one was better than "Chocolate Chip..." but it was entertaining - I liked the chocolate recipes better, tho - I'm a chocoholic but have to ration myself (darn!). I think somewhere in the next books, Hannah gets some competition - a new gal in town opens up a competing bakery; should get interesting!
Kenjii wrote: "Urgh BJ ROSE . U are my second challenge. The first? Not to break down and buy more books!! LOL"Kenjii - my advice? Read, Don't Buy!! I just realized that I haven't claimed my last prize - I was so focused on what your secret prize would be, I forgot!! I'll have to go back thru the messages to see what I can 'legally' buy! My TBR stack has been shrinking!!
EDIT: Found it! It was "Magicians and Sorcerers" 1956 pages, reward 3 new OR 6 used books - I'll probably go with the 6 used. Yay! A trip to the UBS on the way!!
Again, thank you for the bonus books!!

Good to know, Jane - Going to be looking for this one and Lover Enshrined at the UBS
BJ Rose wrote: "Good to see you getting back to yourself, Briansgirl :) Reading can be a great comfort -Yikes! Having to drive 90 miles for book bargains - I'd be doing all my book-buying online!!
I do most of my book buying at thrift shops or garage sales. When I want something specific, I buy online but still used. It's really rare for me to buy something new. With the major bookstores so far away, I just don't go. When I've driven my fiance to the airport, I've stopped at the bookstore before heading home. When we were in Kansas City for 4 days for the funeral, when I needed a break we drove 3 miles over to a huge mall with a Books-a-Million store.
I'm out of the running for this challenge. Not that I was a real threat anyway. lol I'm reading bits here or there, all non-fiction, but I'm not finishing any of them.
I picked up a book from a thrift shop yesterday for 50 cents, just because it looked good. It's a humor book America on Six Rubles a Day by Yakov Smirnoff. When I was flipping through it at home before decided what shelf to put it on, I noticed the front title page of the book has YAKOV scrawled across it. I looked to see if it was printed, or signed. When you look at the back of the title page, you can see the bleed through of his marker (darker in some places than others). It's an autograhed copy of the book! For 50 cents! :)
So that puts me out of the challenge.
I was definetly surprised. It's actually rather good. The only problem is a joke every paragraph gets old, quick. Still surprised I found an autographed copy of a book for 50 cents at a thrift shop. (Then again, earlier this year I found a crisp $20 bill in a ten cent thrift shop reader's digest condensed book used as a bookmark. The bill was printed in the '60s so it was left in the book a very long time.)
Oh wow. You'd think people flip through books to take out random bookmarks before giving the damn thing away, but apparently not. And nobody got to the $20 bill for, possibly, 40 years? That's amazing.

BJ Rose wrote: "BG, you are a walking advertisement for shopping in thrift stores - what are the odds?!"I don't know the odds. lol You can get good deals at thrift shops although these are examples of your better than average deal. hehe :)
The $20 had never been folded even. Looked new, just old. That's why I looked at the printing date and I think it was 1963. It amazed me that not only the original reader left it in the book, but all the hands it went through to get to the shelf of the thrift shop and nobody had found it. I bought books 10/$1 or 25 cents each (so made sure I had ten) and it was tucked into a reader's digest book with The Agony & The Ectasy, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Winter of Our Discontent in it.
BG, I'm curious about the Readers' Digest Condensed version of "To Kill a Mockingbird" - did you read it? I have great respect for those who are able to condense a book and still have it make sense, but I've also read some that ended up either being boring or left me wondering what was going on. However, I think I would have enjoyed "Winter of Our Discontent" more in condensed form! (I'm so bad!!)
I didn't read the condensed version of To Kill a Mockingbird because many years ago I read the full version. I bought it because I wanted to read The Agony & The Ectasy and this is the only version of it I've found. I've got the movie starring Charleton Heston and Rex Harrison. It's about the relationship between Michangeleo and the Pope over the painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. I don't know what the Winter of our Discontent is about as only the title is familiar. Path is the Hunter is the 4th novel in that particular reader's digest book. I thought it was worth a dime. Turns out I made $19.90 profit! lol
Winter of Our Discontent is by John Steinbeck - I read it because it was the last book he wrote before he died AND I figured it's a classic and I'm trying to work my way thru those - but this was a BIG disappointment

Winter of Our Discontent Stewie from Family Guy references this book in a rant of his. I'll have to look up the scene, lol, sorry not really on topic to your comment but it's weird to know he actually meant something real =D
It's always cool Kenjii to pick up on obscure references. One of my favorite TV shows was Gilmore Girls and they had so many pop culture references you couldn't count them or keep track of them all. I'd get most but occassionally some went over my head. Rory was a very prolific reader, having a different classic in her hand almost every episode.

Coffee at Luke's: An Unauthorized Gilmore Girls Gabfest by Jennifer Cruise - 197 pages 8/31/09

Hey! That's a good idea BG. You can re-set your count and continue in the current challenge or wait until the next challenge if you buy a book! I like that =D.
I never liked/watched Gilmore Girls. I don't know why I mean I liked the actresses but I don't the the format of the show [or the WB for that matter, lol:] was right for me =D.
I loved the quirky characters and the small-town in Gilmore Girls. I loved the pop culture references and fast talking main characters. I really loved that a main character in a tv series not only read books, but something decent and read more than one.I know there's no way I'm gonna win. lol And someone will win and we'll start a new one soon, but reset my page count (which was only 59 to begin with, lol) so you'd all know how I was getting along. I read this book in 2 days, so that's an improvement. The other stuff I've been reading has only been a few pages at a time and I havn't finished any of them.

Please do look it up, Kenjii - I'd like to know what he was ranting about - if it was that it was a waste of his time to read it, I'm with him there!

Me too BJ Rose! I mean yeah your buying, but your still reading defeating that TBR pile. Love it! I included BG's idea in the rules, lol.

Working on my unclaimed rewards from "Magicians and Sorcerers" (reward 3 new OR 6 used books) - I'm going for the 6 used. Couldn't find much on my last trip to UBS - the gal said that people just haven't been bringing books in lately, which sounds the opposite of what I would expect with things the way they are.Found these two:
The Book of Scandal by Julia London
The Enchantment by Kristin Hannah
and ordered a used copy of:
Counterpoint Tecumseh Vs. William Henry Harrison by James Huston, so I can read about The Curse of Tippecanoe
A Gift of Hope The Tony Melendez Story by Tony Melendez
So I have 2 book credits left

"Darn you all! Darn you all to heck!" from Madagascar. I am such a slow reader due to reading many, many, many books. I will have to start posting when I reach the halfway mark I think. LOL. To keep up! I have not yet found that Stewie "Winter" reference but I'll keep trying.
