I would always choose Jeremy Brett - but who would be able to emulate that wonderful sexy voice ? Patrick Stewart has a great voice, don't you agree ? But taking choices aside, and as it's already been done (rather well IMHO) with Peter Cushing in the Star Wars prequel Rogue One (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uKtU...) it's now more a case of the legal aspects that are an issue. I suppose actors will need copyrights to their image and voice written into contracts - presently it's a really big issue.

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments Ronald Coleman! Sidney Carton! Yes, he had a great voice. So many of those actors from a bygone era did - Yul Brynner, George Sanders, Gregory Peck, or Brock Peters, who co-starred with Peck in Mockingbird. For my books, it depends, Jeremy Brett for the Sherlock tales, I was happy with Susan Duerden for the Austen work. Modern mysteries? Ages ago, one was actually narrated by Ellen Travolta - predated streaming, but she did a great job, really got that Jersey vibe.

me too, nobody was as near perfect as Jeremy Brett. Second best has been Peter Cushing but he needed a better Watson.

I think the Robert Downey jnr version with Jude Law would have been greatly improved if they had simply swapped roles ! My reasons are that Jude is the better height and build and (aside from darkening his hair) is just about Paget perfect. Robert Downey jr just needs to be a smarter, cleaner character to be Watson.

But it's Jeremy Brett for me, every time.

Barbara | 348 comments I mentioned AI and just read an article about all of the platforms that are starting to offer AI conversion of books. I'd be interested in listening to one - not sure some generic narrator would be interesting. On the other hand, if you use an actor's voice without their permission to create narration, there would be legal issues, I guess.
Just a week or two ago, there was that story about a coach or teacher who made an AI generated version of the principal's voice working bigoted language into it - it was found out, but not until after the principal was embarrassed and subjected to an online tirade.

Naomi Jones | 2 comments I loved Peter Cushing’s interpretation of Holmes, but I have always pictured him in my own way since I was a little girl. Sort of a mix between Peter Cushing and Paget’s illustrations.

Orontes | 2 comments Yes, Cushing is almost perfect, at times he looks like he's been drawn by Paget, and I think he knew it :) I wish he could have had the opportunity of playing Holmes when he was a bit younger, (like when he played Frankenstein) because for once I'd like to see SH and JW at the age of a Study in Scarlet as they should be..

Robert Pater | 2 comments So disagree - and I know this is just personal preference. But I won't watch Brett as SH. He's WAY too nervous/unsettled/hyper for the way I envision SH. Rathbone to me is the quintessential SH.

Barbara | 348 comments On the topic "Rank The Sherlock" there was a post from a while back that showed the ranking on some web site or article - they put Basil Rathbone first, Jeremy Brett second, Benedict Cumberbatch third and Peter Cushing fourth.
I would definitely put Cushing above Cumberbatch. I think the only think that worked against him was his stature. He was very slight, and under 6; (though his height was reported as anywhere from 5'9' to 6') Holmes was certainly thin but he was tall.
Plus - I always see a lot of character potential in Cushing, wonder what he could have done with characters like Lestrade or John Clay or Langdale Pike.

Yes, it would be a treat to see SH & JW played by actors of the correct age group - but who would they be ?

So disagree. For me it's always Brett for my first choice with Cushing as a runner up. That "tension" is essential to portrayal and of the character of SH and that's what made Rathbone wrong for me.

Peter Cushing was almost 6' tall, but working with Chris Lee so often gave the impression he was shorter, as Chris is almost 6 1/2' tall.
