Cherie (cheriereads) Welcome Hettie! Thanks for joining us. In answer to your questions:

"I can choose games, teams and tasks up to any point before the game starts is that correct? But can I change a book for a particular task after the game ends (as long as it fits into the task chosen)?"
That is all correct

"Can I add extra points after the game ends or do they also have to be chosen before it starts?"
You do not have to choose your extra points ahead of time. The only requirements for extra points are that you complete your main prediction task first. I think I've been unclear about extra points in the rules so I'll revise that.

"Also can someone point me to some links so that I can find out the results for the games and where all the games to be played are listed?"
You can check out NFL.com for the complete schedule and game results if you like. I am working on listing all of the weekly schedules right here in this folder for quick reference so they should be posted in a couple of days. I also plan on updating that thread with the game results on a regular basis.

Olivia ツ (liv_reads) I'm in but only as a sidelines competitor. I stopped watching professional sports because my blood pressure couldn't handle it.

I'm staying loyal to my team in the hopes that they get back up!! Oakland Raiders!! Black & Silver all the way.

Cherie (cheriereads) :) Thanks for joining us olivia!

Barb Hettie wrote: "I am looking forward to seeing how all you true fan do with sticking with your teams"

LOL My problem is that I don't have one favorite professional team. I have several that I like a lot, and a few that I really despise, but I just can't choose ONE favorite team :)

message 55: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) Well, I love my Saints - but I'm not picking them every week. Mine will be based more on what teams I can make fit with the books I have scheduled to read during a month. I would love to pick Saints all the way, however!!

jaxnsmom I'm in! I'm going for Option 1, not ready for the Super Bowl this year :)

My two co-workers have told me my team has to be San Francisco 49ers.

Thanks Cherie. This looks like it will be alot of fun!
The lists that you have prepared already are amazing.

I have got my first prediction up and now I am just waiting to see if I chose teams really badly! Choosing teams came down to mascots!

How do people choose their teams?

Here in the uk with soccer teams it is usually where you have grown up or a famous team you latch onto as a child. As far as I can see there are large areas of the us that do not have a local team, so how do you choose?

That's hard to answer LOL I think most of the US falls into the "coverage" area of one team or another. Since that team is what's broadcast in your area all the time, you sort of get attached that way. Or, if you're like me, all that exposure to one team turns you *off that team, and you find another team to follow instead :)

I was raised by two avid Cleveland Browns fans, and I currently live between Pittsburgh (Steelers) and Philadelphia (Eagles). We're also not far from Washington DC (Redskins) and Baltimore (Ravens), and we somehow get a lot of broadcasts of both the Giants and the Jets too.

So who are *my favorite pro teams? The Packers, the Chiefs and, to a lesser extent, the Bears :) I also like the Redskins and the Browns, but neither team has done well in recent years :(

message 66: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I grew up watching football with my dad and he was a Packers fan. I have no idea why since he was from Georgia. My mom is from Pittsburg, so I like the Steelers, though not so much now. I lived in WI for about 4 years - so I'm still a Packers fan. I lived in Cleveland, so I like the Browns, but I don't really follow them. I love Peyton Manning and Eli, because they are from New Orleans so I follow their teams. But I am a New Orleans girl and Love My Saints!! And we hate the Cowboys!! In college it's LSU and the SEC all the way (except for Alabama and Florida!!). So complicated!! LOL Please pray for New Orleans!

message 67: by Kate (last edited Oct 09, 2012 11:15PM) (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) I don't watch American Football. I am more a fan of "real" football aka soccer. But this still sounds like a fun challenge. I am going to go all out there and try to do both Option 1 and 2. I attended college in San Diego so I will go with the Chargers. For Option 2, I will do the opponents of the Chargers for that week. I don't really care about the points aspect because I honestly don't know anything about any of these teams. lol

Option 1: Fans on the Sidelines:

1. The Chargers are based in San Diego, California. Read a book set in California.

2. The official team colors are Navy, Gold, Powder Blue and White. Read a book whose cover is primarily one of these colors or a combination of them.
The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2) by Rick Riordan - 9/5/12 *****

3. The Chargers name was chosen from a contest because the then team owner, Barron Hilton, owned the credit card company, Carte Blanche, and wanted to encourage his team's fans to be "chargers." Read a book with a character who loves to shop.
Confessions of a Shopaholic

4. The Chargers have had 7 Hall of Fame players. Read a book with a character whose name matches one of these players (first or last): Lance Alworth, Fred Dean, Dan Fouts, Sid Gillman, Charlie Joiner, Ron Mix, Kellen Winslow

5. Pick a set of initials matching one of the players above and read a book whose title includes words that begin with those letters.
Example: If the initials were J.K. you could use the book With Just One Kiss

Fred Dean - Speaker for the Dead - 10/9/12 *****

6. Read any book whose author's initials can be found in the word CHARGERS. The intials do not have to be found in order.
Example: Robert A. Heinlein - R and H can both be found in Chargers.

Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover by Ally Carter- 9/5/12 *****

7. The Chargers were established in 1960. Read a book by any author born in that year. This list may help.

8. They won a league championship in 1963. Read any book published in that year.

message 68: by Kate (last edited Oct 09, 2012 11:21PM) (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Option 2: Players on the Field:

Week 1: Chargers vs Raiders
2. The official team colors are Silver, Black and White. Read a book whose cover is primarily one of these colors or a combination of them.
Catherine the Great Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie - primarily black. 9/3/12 **

Week 2: Tennessee Titans vs San Diego Chargers
3. The name "Titans" is a nod to Nashville, TN being known as "the Athens of the south." The titans in Greek mythology are immortal giants of incredible strength and stamina. Read a book about or based on Greek myth OR a book with mythology listed as a genre on its main page.
The Son of Neptune- 9/5/12 *****

Week 3: Falcons vs Chargers
6. Read any book whose author's initials can be found in the word FALCONS. The initials do not need to be found in order.
Example: Christine Feehan: C and F can both be found in Falcons

Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover by Ally Carter- 9/5/12 *****

Week 4:Chargers vs Chiefs
2. The official team colors are Red, Gold and White. Read a book whose cover is primarily one of these colors or a combination of them.
A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle, #1) by Libba Bray - The cover is predominately white (from the corset) and a background of dark red. - 9/6/12 ****

Week 5:Chargers vs Saints:
3. The team became official on All-Saints Day and since there is a large Catholic population in New Orleans the owner thought it only fitting to name the team the "Saints." Read any book where religion plays an important role OR read any book with religion as a genre on it's main page OR read a book with Christian fiction listed as a genre on its main page.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (without giving too much away, religion plays a big part in solving the crime. It was essential to the novel) - 9/7/12 ****

Week 6: Broncos vs Chargers:

Week 7: Titans vs Bills

Week 8: Chargers vs Browns

Week 9: Chiefs vs Chargers

Week 10: Chargers vs Buccaneers

Week 11: Chargers vs Broncos

Week 12:

message 69: by Kate (last edited Aug 31, 2012 02:56AM) (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) I have a question about reading and such. Okay, so you said on the first thread that we can start reading on August 29th, right? So if I finish a book before my team even plays their first match, can I count it? Do I need to read them in order of week to week or could I read my week 16 pick first and week 1 last?

Since I am doing Option 1 and 2, can I have some cross challenge? Or should they both be separate books? For example, The Son of Neptune has Greek mythology in it so I am counting it for Week Two for Tennessee Titans. At the same time, at least a portion of the book takes place in California so it could be counted for that task in my Option 1 San Diego Chargers book set in California.

Thanks for your help!

message 70: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) Welcome to the challenge, Kathryn! As long as you've made your prediction and picked your task before the game starts you can read the book whenever you like up until the end of the season. You can read the book before the game starts or after it's over. The books do not need to be read in "week" order.

What I'm going to do is make my prediction then read the book during the week heading up to the actual game. Then as soon as the game is over I can collect whatever points I get. Then I'll make a prediction for the next week's game and read the book before the game and so on. This works best if you really want to get the most points because you can predict the games based on how the season is progressing.

If you don't care so much about the points you can make some or all of your predictions and choose the corresponding tasks ahead of time and then read the books for them in whatever order you like.

Yes, you can cross-challenge between Options 1 and 2.

I hope this answers your question. If anything is unclear just let me know. :)

Thank you! That was incredibly helpful!!!

message 72: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) Remember, you can start reading if you haven't already as long as you've made your prediction for whatever game you're reading for.

message 73: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) I'm so glad I popped in here, because that was my question as well. Perfect answer - and I agree, making picks each week make sense, except some games are reasonably easy to guess!! Thanks

message 74: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) I love the Browns, but they have won a championship since before I was born.

Can I read books by dr seuss published in 1964 that equals so many pages for that task?

message 75: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) Teresa, which option are you doing? If you're doing Option 1 I'll say yes you can use the Seuss books as long as you can find enough published in that year that equal 150 pages.

If you're doing option 2 I'm going to say no since 150 Dr. Seuss pages don't really equal 150 pages in an adult novel. Since we're playing for points in Option 2 I don't think it would really be fair.

message 76: by Barb (new)

Barb You may have answered this already; my apologies if you have!

If we pick the same team to win more than one week's game, do we have to do a different task for that team each time? Or can we repeat the same task, as long as we read a different book that meets that requirement?

message 77: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) Barb, you can repeat the same task if you like as long as you read a different book.

message 78: by Barb (new)

Barb Thanks, Cherie! That's what I thought, but it's better to ask ahead of time :)

message 79: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 36 comments My turn for a question. :)

For the task where the author's initials must be found in the team name (e.g., BEARS), is it just first and last initial, or does the middle initial (if the author uses one) also have to be found in the team name? For example, I'm currently reading a book by Shannon K Butcher. Would I be able to use that since S & B are both found in BEARS even if K is not?

Thanks!
