Jennifer | 133 comments @ Aryanna-You mean, you were wondering if Fullmetal Alchemist the Manga is any good? I thought it was very good! And both Anime are pretty good too. =)

I just finished watching Black Blood Brothers, and I'm so sad that its so short!!! I think it has a lot of potential, and I wish they'd made more of them. =(

I remember watching that last year and couldn't get pass the first episode though I love period pieces. It just bored me.

message 53: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 133 comments Yeah. I thought it had an interesting start, but then it got really, really boring. So if you found the first episode to be boring, then I definitely recommend you avoid the rest of it.

I only watched the whole thing through because I am incredibly stubborn....and maybe a little stupid.

I saw one episode of Mushishi and I just didn't get into it. I know I should give it another try. I guess I just wasn't in the mood at the time, you know?

I just finished watching Blood+, and although I thought it started off really slow, and dragged at points, in the end I liked it. I thought the cello and vocal music themes used throughout the story were really beautiful, and there were points when the artwork was very well done, surreal and detailed. And the ending satisfied me. That is always a very important point for me. I find it worse if a show is really good but the ending is a disappointment than if a show is just bad throughout.

I'm starting two new animes now. Gunslinger Girl and El Cazador de la Bruja. Does any one know if either of these are any good?

message 56: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I'm currently watching Eureka Seven, Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, Psycho-Pass, Robotics;Notes, Shinsekai Yori, Tamako Market, Zetsuen no Tempest and Zettai Karen Children: The Unlimited - Hyoubu Kyousuke. I tend to watch the shows just coming out and sampling older series as I go along.

Of these shows I'd recommend Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, Tamako Market and Psycho-Pass the most.

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha because it keeps breaking all expectations from its initial summary in the best ways (it seemed like your typical fantasy romance and then just sort of blasted on through and made it about economics and mutual admiration and just, oh, it's lovely).

Tamako Market because Kyoto Animation seriously cannot seem to do anything other than superb story, characters and plot arcs.

Psycho-Pass is for when you just need a futuristic crime drama that makes you question psychology, the consequences of technological advancement and societal complacency. The rest range from good to mediocre.

Jennifer | 133 comments Alright. I watched Mushi-shi, and.........I liked it. My bad.

This winter is a bit bleak, not as thrilling as last fall, but there is still Psycho Pass (the best I have watched so far), Zetsuen no Tempest and Robotics;Notes~ I also watch Hetalia Beautiful World, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha (politic and economy yay~), Senyuu (plainly hilarious):D This winter is so boring I pick anime I have dropped like Naruto and HunterxHunter remake ( ._.)

Oh and I just watched The Sky Crawler tonight, the story is really good, the aerial fight and the CGI are awesome.

Camille (kameeley) | 23 comments Anyone else watching Chihayafuru? If anyone else is maybe we can start reading the 100 poems together and chat about it hehe.

I am crazy addicted to it right now. Also Natsume Yuujinchou is really addicting and reminded me of Mushishi (note I haven't ready mushishi in... 8 years).

Also to the adult ladies in the house... anyone else drawn to yaoi here? I just watched an anime and then read (:O) some manga and I'm hooked.

Are you into Yaoi or Shounen-ai? I don't mean to be rude! It's just that there is a bit of a difference and I don't want to scare you off by giving hardcore recommendations when you really just want the emotional/gentle/softcore stuff. Unfortunately it's been a very long time since I've read only shounen-ai so I can't give very good recommendations on that aspect. I do, however, know a bit more about the naughty side of the genre.

If you're looking for some good yaoi (sexy times) recommendations, I have to recommend Fake, Volume 01 by Sanami Matoh by Sanami Matoh for the story. It's very tame for someone just getting into the genre and has a great, over-reaching story to boot. FAKE also has a relatively old OVA (one-episode movie/series). It's a bit hard to find, and it's really tame (just kissing I believe?) but I really enjoyed the story regardless.

There's also Vassalord, Volume 1 by Nanae Chrono , by Nanae Chrono which I find delightful, but the story's a bit slipshod--it's about the characters and their ridiculous, amazing co-dependent love story, so. If that's your thing, it's great! It also has an OVA that just came out with the final volume (in Japan) so neither has been officially translated/available for purchase here (you can find it online though, oh ho ho. Volumes 1-4 are translated/available on Amazon BUT since Tokyopop went bankrupt no one's picked up the license so we're stuck on that. Up to Volume 6 can be found online, though.

Your Love Sickness (Yaoi) by Hayate Kuku by Hayate Kuku and Scandalous Seiryo University, Volume 01 by Kazuto Tatsukawa by Kazuto Tatsugawa are great, especially if you're into the more explicit side of yaoi. Seiryo is VERY explicit so unless you're ready for that, you might want to pass on it for a bit. Both of these are manga-only, though.

I really adore The Tyrant Falls in Love, Volume 1 by Hinako Takanaga , but there's some questionable content (it's pretty much the definition of dub-con (dubious consent) and a bit worse, so if that's not something you're into, you might want to pass) It gets a bit better? But if that's not your thing you might want to wait. Hinako Takanaga is a gem, though, and nearly all of her other stories are just sappy and rolling in sweetness. There's a short anime about this series, too, I believe. I haven't had the chance to watch it, though, so I can't give any real opinion on it.

Ayano Yamane is a very well-known yaoi mangaka, and I know that at least one of her series has been made into an OVA ( A Foreign Love Affair by Ayano Yamane is one I'm sure of). There's also Youka Nitta, who is famous for her series Haru wo Daiteita - Embracing Love - Vol.01 by Youka Nitta which also has an OVA, 2-3 episodes, I believe.

Gosh, I'm really sorry for the huge post! I'm not actually all that rabid for it; I used to be and these are basically the stuff I've kept up with since I mostly grew out of the phase. If you have any questions about my suggestions (or would like more!) please feel free to PM me or comment again! I'd be very glad to help!

Summer Wars is fantastic! Have you checked out his other stuff? He also directed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (both of which are tear-jerkers, especially the second one). If I remember right, he also did Digimon movies, too!

In particular, I'm excited for Kotonoha no Niwa by Makoto Shinkai, mostly because it looks gorgeous and Shinkai is famous for ripping your heart out.

Mandamarie | 3 comments So I've recently gotten really into Anime. I've watched a few different series, but I always have a really hard time finding new and engaging anime to watch. So far I've watched most of Inuyasha, Fruits Basket, spice and wolf, and hiiro no kakera. I've liked them, but I can never really tell if I'll actually like an anime series. Anyone have any good suggestions about good anime series to watch?

Batsap | 45 comments Just discovered Detroit Metal City, Vol. 1 and finding it hilarious (although people who are easily offended probably wouldn't enjoy it, it can be a bit outrageous) and it has an anime. Haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but if it's anything like the manga I highly recommend it. There's also been a movie made of it - watched a couple of trailers for it and it looks fun.

What type of show are you interested in? Slice of life? Mecha? Horror? Shounen (Boys action/heroes i.e. Bleach/Naruto/One Piece)? Shoujo (romance/slice of life/magical girl i.e. Sailor Moon, Uta no Prince-sama,)? There's so many to choose from, you can look for specific types, though the quality may vary. If you're just getting into anime but you want to keep up with the current stuff coming out, there's always the currently airing series (called seasons). We're currently in the Spring Season, this is a list of anime that is currently airing.

For general recommendations there's Angel Beats!, Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai (Ano Hana for short), Another, Baccano!, Kokoro Connect, Little Witch Academia (one episode, but excellent), Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, Tamako Market, and Working!!.
*These are shorter series 11-13 episodes each.

There's also Ao no Exorcist, Darker than Black, Ergo Proxy, Fate/Zero (Season 1 and 2 = 26 episodes), Hyouka, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Mawaru Penguindrum, Ookiku Furikabutte, Ouran High School Host Club, Psycho-Pass, Star Driver, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Tiger & Bunny, and Zetsuen no Tempest.
*These shows range from 22-27 episodes.

There's a lot here, but their genres are pretty all over the map, so you can just pick and choose what you think you'll like. I tried to pick stuff that was compelling story-wise and also good to look at (a personal tic of mine). Most of these shows tend to go for emotional/ideological/intellectual impact, but some are just for fun--because what else is anime but enjoyment, yeah? Some of these are also mature and/or bloody, so if you have any questions about that sort of stuff, please feel free to ask!

Good luck with your forays into anime! If you have any more questions (or would just like to talk about what you've watched!) I'm sure we'd love to hear it. (:

Z○e *♥ItsGreekForLife♥* (ItsGreekForLife) You have? :D YAY!

It's a pretty good anime. It flows nicely (unlike the Fruits Basket anime).

message 71: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Fruits Basket ran out of funding at episode 10. I mean, I'm not saying it's a particularly good show, but their hasty wrap-up was largely because they literally had no money to resolve the show in a cohesive, well-paced way.

I'm currently watching Devil Summoner 2 (boring, but I'm halfway through), Hataraku Maou-sama!, Karneval (same as DS2, might as well finish), Shingeki no Kyojin, Suisei no Gargantia and Uta no Prince-sama Magi Love 2000%. It's gonna be a pretty lack-luster Spring/Summer season, but I'm still looking forward to Free! and the Sailor Moon 20th anniversary remake. Nostalgia punch!

So that's why. :( I had no idea. That's alright though. it's just that I kinda didn't feel that in the beginning of it that it didn't flow too well. Even when they had money. I guess I just wasn't in to it.

Thanks!

Yeah, there's no real way to tell if it could have been really good or stayed mediocre, we just have to deal with what we've gotten. Nowadays that isn't much of a problem anymore, as the anime is more popular in general.

Z○e *♥ItsGreekForLife♥* (ItsGreekForLife) It's does have it's humor....And yes that's true.

message 75: by Z○e *♥ItsGreekForLife♥* (last edited May 09, 2013 06:26AM) (new)

Z○e *♥ItsGreekForLife♥* (ItsGreekForLife) Yea, but then it would be missing a lot of characters that I liked. Then again, you could just meet them in the manga, so, it would be a lot better if they just ended the anime there. Fruits Basket was funny and touching at times but not one of my favorite. The opening song was enjoyable, though. Did you like the opening, too?

Batsap | 45 comments I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I didn't want to start a whole new thread, so I hope nobody minds!
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a manga or anime that deals with angels? I've been watching Supernatural and adore the character of Castiel and the whole angels as soldiers thing and was thinking how well it could work as an anime/manga. Preferably something serious, along the lines of D.Gray-man, but humorous is fine too. And anything with demons in it would be welcome too. :)

Well, there's Angel Sanctuary (manga), which is serious but also dubious because I hear there's at least implied incest. There's 07-Ghost (manga and anime) that has demons/angel-esque Christian-esque mythology. Chrono Crusade is very Christian-mythos heavy, but it revolves around demons and an alternate view of Christian myth in general.

The main problem you're going to find is that there aren't a lot of Christian-mythos oriented series out there, mostly because Christianity isn't nearly as prevalent in Japanese/Asian culture as it is here. What I've seen has usually treated Christianity as an oddity/novelty. In addition, a lot of the mythos they talk about/use is either incorrect or mangled, and is usually much more focused on demons/ghosts than angels.

I don't think there's a series other than D. Gray Man that also incorporates stuff like Supernatural, at least with a Christian-esque/angel-soldier feel to it. If you just want mythology/monster-stuff, manga is generally rife with mythology and even Supernatural-type stuff, but Christianity-stuff is a real toughie to find in Japanese media.

Oh! But there is a Supernatural anime available to watch. It's been made to coincide with the TV series and I believe in the dub Sam is voiced by Jared Padalecki (but Dean is by someone other than Jensen Ackles). I've seen it and it's pretty much the same as the live-action, but focuses on material different from the show (no angels really, just monsters).

message 79: by Batsap (new)

Batsap | 45 comments Thank you :)
I've ordered the first volume of Angel Sanctuary. I got over the incest in Game of Thrones, so as long as it isn't too heavy-handed I should be okay with it. I'll check out the other two as well.
All mythology is interesting, what are some good mangas that deal with mythology?
Thanks for reminding me about the Supernatural anime! A friend downloaded it recently so I'll have to bug her into letting me watch it asap.

Ceres, Celestial Legend: Aya, Vol. 1 also deals with angels but as Michelle mentioned it's not the Christian interpretation. It's based more off the heavenly maiden fairytales.

You might like Ghost Hound, although the ending wasn't all that strong. It has some really creepy parts though!!

I'm currently finishing up Hero Tales, and then I think I'm moving on to Baka and Test. Oh, I also recently watched Speed Grapher, which was really weird but pretty cool. =)

Lamora | 6 comments Oh! thank you for reminding me that myanimelist is a great place to keep track of the anime I'm watching. I had an account there and I completely forgot about it!

Most of what you mentioned so far, such as Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, are some of my favourite anime and some of my not-so-favourite-but-still-pretty-cool, i.e. Elfen Lied.

Another one I loved was Serial Experiments Lain which was the most confusing and complex anime I had watched. Pretty hard to get into but rewarding if you persist!

Trigun is just cool. Vash the Stampede is one of the funniest tough guy characters I've seen so far. It mixes comic characters, situations and conversations with a dramatic plotline pretty well.

I also used to watch School Rumble which is great for completely random episodes; the jokes are either amazingly funny or fall a little flat (something that, for me, happened rarely). Mostly it was the animation making me lmao.

Should watch Darker Than Black season 2 but haven't gotten around to it. Should watch a lot of things, actually. Most recent non-ongoing anime I watched was Library War -- short but cute. Currently reading the novel-version of the movie Paprika, reading the Hellsing manga and watching Hellsing Abridged and DBZ Abridged -- both fan-made youtube parodies.
