Am I the only one creeped out by Christian?

Nalu.chan Seriously, I was completely creeped out by Grey. The sex part was... well, not normal, but there are people who enjoy BDMS and stuff (hey, who am I to judge when someone likes it really spicy). But Christian's psychological problems with his mother - and his way to cope with it... Really, throughout the book, I was thinking "Psycho Alert! Psycho Alert! We have a potencial rapist/serial killer on the loose!".
Am I the only one who thought so?

Kristin I was thinking the same thing. Christian would be an excellent serial killer. Unfortunately, I bet you are going to be torn apart by the responses in this discussion. Fandoms are crazy.

Carole No I agree with you. I think that people ignore this because he is so wealthy and good looking.
I have since found a series called Gabriel's Inferno & Gabriel's Rapture by Sylvain Reynard. I found the main character Gabriel so much more intriguing and not creepy. This is just my opinion.

i agree the fans will probably try and peck u apart...STAY STRONG!!!! lol

see i also thought ana was a little skitzo i mean come on she had her inner goddess and her subconciouse....sounds like a split personality to me

Jenna Marah wrote: "Yes that is exactly right. Total nutty bat. And that inner goddess stuff seemed crazy as heck to me."

i agree

Nichole The only time I found Christian creepy is when he spoke. Reminded of a controllable "father figure," which only made the ability to see him as an attractive, wealthy, sexy figure, harder. (I mean, if you think of your dad that way, that's just pretty gross - I don't care if your dad is Richard Gere).

But overall, he is a creepy character because of his extreme control tendencies. Honestly, if anyone came across someone like that, most would be smart enough to run for the lives... but then, girls these days... what can I say... no self-esteem... which is why Ana was his victim.

With that said, he does have the tendency to be just like a common rapist or serial killer... except Christian's character doesn't seek to harm, without consent. First rule of a rapist or serial killer is to not give a flying crap what their victim's think.

S.L.J. In the bedroom he likes to be king.
In a war zone he'd be cannon fodder.

He's not creepy, he's pathetic.

Ayesha Nichole wrote: "The only time I found Christian creepy is when he spoke."

Snort.

It's not just his creepy, controlling possessiveness. For me, it's mostly the fact that this is a man who is clearly not emotionally ready to be involved in an equitable relationship with anyone. By his own admission, Christian is (view spoiler), and his S/M lifestyle reinforces that insanity.*

He should be in intensive therapy and at the end of the first date, I would tell him so, not sign a contract giving him complete and total control of my sexual life.

*There's nothing wrong with an S/M lifestyle, provided it's an expression of sexual health and not an expression of emotional dysfunction. Everybody likes their hair pulled once in a while, but it should be used to deal with left over mommy issues.

S.L.J. He reminds me of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs.

oops or freudian slip?

i meant to say should NOT be used. lol

Reign Marah wrote: "I was not creeped out by him. I like weird people. Ana creeped me out cause she just seemed like a nut. I thought Christian was just the typical Alpha male protecting what he perceived as his... I ..."

Ana was weird and idiotic to me. Christian wasn't that weird in my view. I totally agree, typical Alpha male traits.

Sparrowlicious Ohh, this thread. :)

At first I thought he was just ... odd. But then again, Ana already seemed like a weird character to me.
But then he was just creepy. It's one thing being overprotective but it's another if somone tries to control every part of the life of their partner. That's not normal. That's overly creepy.
Also, though I have not much knowledge of the bdsm lifestyle, I do remember at least hearing once that this was also about trust. There's no such thing in Fifty Shades.

Also, if some guy would tell me during a meal to eat up I would stand up and leave.
Wtf.
It's one thing if a person doesn't eat properly or if they are full and can't finish their meal. It's not healthy to "eat up" all the time.

Nima Take away the good looks, the money and the giant d**k, and tell me whats left.....

Pamela Su I was mostly okay with him in the first book because, hey, we all have some crazy habits. But the second book peels away the wealth and alpha male aspects to reveal a raging, chaotic mess of crazy.

Since Anastasia appears to be as crazy (clingy, spineless and wishy washy), I say they are well suited to each other. :D

Maymay I'm not creeped out by him, but for some strange reason I always picture Christian Bale from American Psycho in my head when thinking of Mr Grey.

LOLs at myself.

That was also my first thought when I saw this thread:
Patrick Bateman.
Oml.

Bevin Kutluoglu Funny. I also pictured Christian Bale the whole time I was reading & couldn't quite put my finger on why ... definitely Patrick Bateman! Good call, Maymay!!!

My friend couldn't read them because she started picturing Conan O'Brien (view spoiler) & got super grossed out. Bah ha ha!

Maymay Maybe that's why I keep ignoring all mentions about his "copper" hair and stubbornly think of dark brown instead. Conan isn't something I want to mix CG with.

C.D. Hussey He definitely creeped me out, and it had nothing to do with the BDSM stuff. I was less creeped out toward the end of the book but not enough to keep reading the series.

Learning about the mommy issues through these forums only creeped me out more.

That being said, I understand why some women adore him. He just isn't the hero for me.

Melanie I kept thinking of him as Christian Bale's character in American Psycho.

message 22: by S.L.J. (last edited Aug 22, 2012 01:03PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

S.L.J. LMAO. Patrick Bateman. All he is missing is a chainsaw.

Stephanie It's fine if you were creeped out by him. Those adults who are damaged as children often have difficulties with relationships that often end the relationships. The difference is that this man actually has empathy with humans, while a serial killer does not.

I had less issues with Christian than with spineless Ana.

message 24: by Roan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Roan He's creepy and hot at the same time. lol (am i even saying this?)

Melanie I did laugh at their conversation of her not having a subordinate bone in her body.

Lizzy i loved christian period.. and at the end he got the help he needed..

message 27: by Ferra (new) - rated it 1 star

Ferra Amiera I just finished reading the first book and yeah,I was creeped out by christian a little bit...I have mixed feelings about him. There's times I do like him and there are times when I don't bcuz of his creepy stalkish ways :/ He's really overprotective and I wish Anastasia would just stand up to him!Although I do feel sorry for him bcuz of what happened when he was 15...

message 28: by Jane (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jane I always thought that he was dead body in the basement creepy. It not the sex, Hey you want to get your freak on, good for you. It was everything else he did and said. But I personally thought she was crazy as well. I mean a contact about what you can and cannot do. Do not think so.

Parul Sharma hez seriously a control freak...

Michelle I felt the same way. I did not like him one bit. I could only get through half of book 2 and have no desire to read the rest.

J.M. Stewart Stephanie wrote: "It's fine if you were creeped out by him. Those adults who are damaged as children often have difficulties with relationships that often end the relationships. The difference is that this man actu..."

Personally, I agree with this poster. I did see him as a little creepy. His control tendencies were a bit over the top. There were times when I really wanted Ana to stand up to him, and I did cheer at the end of the first book when she finally left him. I was also a bit upset at the beginning of the second book that she didn't make him work harder to get her back. He said, "Want a ride?" and she ignored everything from the first book and went, "okay." It wasn't really believable to me.

But like this poster mentioned, it's that wounded side of him that I personally connected with. I'd lived a similar life to him, I have issues too, just that they get demonstrated in different ways. So reading these books, I was able to see past the issues to what's really going on behind them. It's all what they call coping mechanisms. For him, the world is a terrifying place and these idiosyncrasies are how he's learned to feel safe in his world. I understand that, on a deeper level, because I've been there. So, a lot of what people hate about him was powerful to me, because I understood him on a different level.

But I can see why people would have an issue with him.

Brie Yes. Yes he did. He was the fictional version of my creepy very abusive ex.

Coral i vote super creepy control freak.

As soon as I read the title of this discussion all I thought was Grey was so creepy he'd make you into a skin suit.... Glad I am not the only one!

Angela You mean it wasn't meant as a horror novel? I was sincerely hoping it was supposed to be a modern take on one of those old world fairy tales meant to teach young women a lesson... At the very least, I kept waiting for Chris Hansen to come in.

Carole Reading the thread makes me want to ask at what point in time made you want to read erotica without having any personal understanding. Please do some research and explore your own sexuality before you open another erotica novel.

Angela Carole wrote: "Reading the thread makes me want to ask at what point in time made you want to read erotica without having any personal understanding. Please do some research and explore your own sexuality before ..."

It's not about the erotica (although that is some pretty crappy erotica compared to many great ones out there). It is about the fact Christian is a psychopath. If it was a problem with the erotica, a lot more people would be saying "Ew, icky... sex" or whatever people that have a problem with sex say! The sex was pretty lukewarm and stagnant for a lot of readers.

Shubha I bet there are people who loved this book mainly because they were recommended by friends and media who also loved it. And seriously if one read this book with no recommendation or advert as twilight fan-fiction(his nothing like Edward!) I bet your impression of Mr Grey would have been different!!! (We live in a world where we are influenced by people/media!)

People its obvious through out the book his behavior is not normal but yet there are many who fell for Mr Grey??? It shows that men with wealth, power and good-looks can easily blind people into thinking they are someone they are really not.

Yes,the word 'creepy' is just ONE word to describe him.

message 42: by Amy (new)

Amy Christian Grey is a step away from becoming a rapist.

message 43: by Michele (last edited Sep 16, 2012 05:16PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Michele I thought is was just me. I was thinking when I first started reading this book Oh God new Breed of Terror we have a Massive Stalker/God knows what else With Money,Then it got scarier when he was able to get information No one from the outside should be able to get... Yep Freak gone mad... ugh!!!

I did enjoy reading the book for I Love to Read and try and read as much as I can

People need to remember everyone is allowed their own opinions. Don't get mad at people just because they don't agree with what you think :-)

Hilary West Just look at the reviews for this book, nearly all of them are terrible. How did she get away with this shit? Christian Grey is a creep big time. I couldn't read on past page 112, it just didn't seem worth it. I simply was not interested in this vacuous couple. Anastasia was as stupid as he was, two fucked up shits we all wanted to hate, but surely we should reserve our venom for Miss Sado herself EL James, she has persecuted everybody!

Gayle I totally agree with those who say both characters are nuts. Grey and his obsessively controlling personality, and Ana with the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other - couldn't there be more creativity in this story?

The marketing for this book was off the charts, which had to be the reason it was so talked about. The writing was poor, the story was a non-starter, and the characters were both crazy.

The other books? Not worth a second of my time.

Erika Nima wrote: "Take away the good looks, the money and the giant d**k, and tell me whats left....."

I've always wondered, if Christian Grey was not a millionaire but a trucker, fans just love him the same?

message 47: by Teri (new) - rated it 2 stars

Teri Christian isn't just creepy, he's a creepy, obsessive, controlling sociopath. Ana is naive, immature and frankly, so stupid it's almost sickening. If a guy I barely knew followed me 3000 miles to my family's home, I'd not only break up with him, I'd get a restraining order. I would hate for any young woman to think that this was a normal, healthy relationship. Creepy is right. Ick.

Lorelei Oh thank God you don't find that freak hot too. He's repulsive, disgusting and fucked up. The whole "change" thing says nothing to me. People with psychological issues need THERAPY. LMAO when Ana was surprised when he asked her if she'd leave him after she learned that he fucks women who look like his mother. That indicates how mentally disturbed he is, and how stupid Ana's character is. Both of them have lots of issues. During the sex scenes he was hands down creepy and abusive. This book is just so wrong. If i met a guy like him I'd run away in a minute.Psychos ain't sexy.

Clare I think even those (including myself) who loved the characters of this book would have to all agree that he is very controlling and parts of him extreamly un-likeable, but wasnt that the whole point of the story? that innocent Ana came along and changed his world view and outlook on sex? isnt the whole point, that he deals with his demons because of her love and patience for him? I'm all for girl power and all that and agree he's very controlling and possessive, my first thought on him was i'd like to punch his face, but see the story for what it is, and its all about her control over him, and how she woes him to her side of vanilla life. Just my opinion anyway :)

Becky I didn't find him creepy but I'm also not submissive whatsoever, so I can relate to his control issues. Gideon Cross was a little less "psycho" in Bared To You. Maybe you'll like that one better.
