Lauren (laurenjberman) Thanks for posting the shelf Jackie.

My YA-PNR choice is Desires of the Dead (The Body Finder, #2) by Kimberly Derting - I read book #1 a while ago and never got around to continuing so this is the perfect opportunity.

My FREE SPACE choice is The Darkest Lie (Lords of the Underworld, #6) by Gena Showalter from the SOS bookshelf. I love this series.

SHELF: Free Space

Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (Immortals After Dark, #3) by Kresley Cole

Title/Author:
Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night by Kresley Cole
Read for shelf: Free Space
Date finished: Jun 17
Rating: ★★★★
Review: I rarely read series books back to back but I was so obsessed with the narration that I couldn't wait any longer. I'm really glad the rest of the audiobooks in the series haven't been produced yet because I would probably be tempted to listen them all!

Anyways, this story is very similar to the previous ones: man chases woman because he thinks she's his mate while the woman doesn't want anything to do with the guy, blah, blah, blah. But unlike the other books, the hero thinks the heroine (a witch) has enchanted him because he had already had a mate (who died) and men of his kind only get to have one. Regardless, he figures he should follow along because it's like he's getting a second chance.

Bowen is really conflicted about his feelings for Mariketa, feeling disloyal to Mariah, his dead mate. I really enjoyed this part of the plot and was pleasantly surprised at how that was ultimately resolved. I only wished the author would have taken this chance to build a book that was a bit different than the others with the heroine chasing the hero for once. She had material to create such a plot.

But my reason to picking this book wasn't really the story but the narration. The voice for Bowen was scrumptious, specially when he was in a charming frame of mind. The first time I heard him, my feelings were very similar to Carrow's:

"Oh great Hekate, is that his voice?" Carrow cried "I just had an orgasm."

I'm still just 'meh' on the series but I'll definitely keep listening as long as Mr. Petkoff is the narrator.

message 65: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments LOL, thanks Jackie. I've been obsessed with that audiobook the whole week and couldn't wait to start it!

It will probably take me a couple of days to start the YA PNR book because I want to finish one of the other books I've been reading. In the last couple of weeks I've been reading 4 and 5 books at a time.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Well done Captain, my Captain!

message 67: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments Good job, Capt. Hussy !
I'm halfway through my book for YA-PNR shelf - Anna Dressed in Blood and so far it's an ok read. I hope the second part gets more interesting, though.

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm about half way through my Free Space read with plans to start my shelf pick this afternoon when I get home from work.

Way to go Cap! I've never read any of The Immortals After Dark series but now I think I'll be adding yet another series to my TBR list :)

message 69: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I'm also halfway through by YA-PNR - Desires of the Dead. I'm enjoying the thriller/suspense parts but the teenage angst is getting a bit much.

message 70: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Thanks, ladies. :) I should start my YA PNR today if I can finish this book. But I'm just scared of the ending! (It has a tough theme so I don't know if there will be a HEA.)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake ★★★
SHELF: YA-PNR
READ: 6/18/12

First of all, this is not my usual type of PN book. I tend to stay clear from murdering ghosts and zombies but this book came highly recommended and highly rated so I picked it up finally.

Cas Lowood is not your average high school student. He kills dead people and he is the only one who can send bloodthirsty-revenge seeking-murdering ghosts to their final rest. He is summoned to a small Canadian city to take care of one specifically murderous young girl ghost named Anna.

Anna kills everything and everyone who comes inside her house she once lived in. For some reason she doesn't harm (well, at least she doesn't kill him first time they meet ) the one who has come after her – Cas. She sees him and turns from the ultimate scary bloodthirsty zombie with black eyes into beautiful and sad version of Casper, the friendly ghost. That makes Cas to find out what happened to her, forget the plans to kill her and help her break free.

For a YA book it was refreshing to have strong characters and almost no teenage angst in it. There were some things that were bothering me and kept me waiting for an explanation that never came. Why, or was Cas the only “ghostbuster” left , the story of Anna's family background and the most confusing of all was the ending with Obeahman. OK, maybe it's just me, but it felt like the author had all the background stories in her head and clear for her but they didn't came through enough for the reader. Also the romantic connection between Anna and Cas was barely existing.

I gave the three stars only because the ending kept me interested and wanting to turn the pages to find out how the story ends.
Oh well, I guess I will stick to vampires and demons in my future reading :)

Great review Skandia! I bought this book when it was first published and it still sits on my shelf to be read, it may sit there a little longer cause I have so many others I want to read first :)

message 73: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Great review, Skandia! I really hate when authors put up a premise and then don't explain it away. If you tell me, 'Julian can only eat chicken liver' then I expect you to tell me why!

I don't know that I'll be reading it anytime soon either.

message 74: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments Thanks, ladies!
This was on of those books I picked up with high expectations and it sort of fell flat. I guess you can't like them all!

Jackie M | 695 comments Personal Demons (Personal Demons, #1) by Lisa Desrochers
Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers
shelf YA-PNR
read 6/18/2012
4 stars

Some girls have all the luck. Frannie has two hot guys one a demon and one an angel after her soul.

Frannie is good girl who is a bit troubled. She has been carrying around the pain of losing her twin brother for ten years and is able to see peoples deaths before they happen.

Out of the blue bad boy Luc enrolls at her school and is showing some serious interest in her and then along come gorgeous Gabe who is showing some interest in her too.(poor thing)
The two guys are total opposites and imagine her surprise when she finds out that one is a demon and one is an angel. Frannie has a special gift called Sway that gives her the ability to control the outcome of things.

While I liked the book I did have a hard time believing a demon and an angel who have both been around for thousands of years find something so special in a seventeen year old girl, except for Heaven and Hell both wanting her for her 'ability'.... oh well I enjoyed this book enough to continue on with the series.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Desires of the Dead (The Body Finder, #2) by Kimberly Derting
Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting
Shelf: YA-PNR
Finished: June 18
2 Stars

Synopsis
Violet Ambrose has always kept her ability to sense the echoes of the dead a secret but after finding the body of a dead boy, she has drawn the attention of the FBI. Unfortunately, she also finds herself the target of a disturbed stalker and has no one to turn to, not even her closest friend turned boyfriend, Jay Heaton who is preoccupied with he newest pal, Mike, whose family seems to have secrets of its own.

Review
The paranormal thriller premise has potential but is completely overshadowed by the teen melodrama and angst.

Violet has become a completely different character - she has regressed emotionally and is now a typical whiny and jealous girlfriend who keeps secrets and overreacts to the smallest thing. The fact that she fails to tell her parents of the FBI's interest, is completely illogical and ruined my suspension of disbelief.

The story begins well with the discovery of a boy's body and Violet's stalker but ends up going in a confusing and disappointing direction. The tension and suspense that builds in the beginning rapidly fizzles out by the end.

Violet and Jay's romance is sweet and they certainly have oodles of chemistry but his perfection gets old after a while and the inclusion of Rafe feels out of place. It is as if Derting needed a tick next to "love triange" on her YA check list.

I may eventually read the next book if it comes my way but I won't be actively looking for it.

Jeepers you guys are fast readers! but have no fear I'm off work the next 2 days and can spend alot of my time plugging away at my books. I should be finished my free space read sometime today :) I'm not really feeling my YA choice but I'm expecting Half-Blood (Covenant, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout in the mail today so I may switch to that instead :)

message 79: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Wow, ladies! We are moving along mighty fine! I haven't started my YA PNR book yet but no fear, I'll do so today. :) I would have started this morning but I couldn't get a seat in the Subway and I don't like reading on my iPad while standing.

message 80: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I also prefer my Kindle or paperback over the iPad when traveling so I started something else today and will begin my free space read this evening when I get home from work.

message 81: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I don't have a Kindle :( and I've gotten out of the habit of reading paperbacks. I'm too lazy to turn on the lights when I'm reading at night.

Night Reigns (Immortal Guardians, #2) by Dianne Duvall

Title/Author:Night Reigns by Dianne Duvall
Read for shelf:Free Space(found on SOS Bookshelf)
Date Read:June 19th 2012
Rating:♥♥♥♥
Review:Who doesn't love a book that has Hot Alpha Male Characters and Chicks that know how to kick some serious Butt, because Night Reigns has it all!

I'm truly in love with this series! I loved the interaction between all the characters but Marcus and Ami's relatioship was told brillently and I loved how the two over came their fears about falling in love and found peace in each other. There was plenty of action and an ending that left me with more questions then answers and a huge desire to get my hands on book three.

Although this was Marcus and Ami's story my favorite characters were Seth and Sebastian, both characters are intriguing with facinating yet vague back stories that make me curious to find out more about them. Sebastian's story is being released Oct 1st of this year and I can hardly wait. This book was a solid 4 stars for me and I will be eagerly waiting for October 1st so I can get my next fix of these tantalizing Immortals.

message 83: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Thanks for the review Kat. I have the first book in the series on my TBR. Maybe it will fit into one of our bookshelves and I will get around to reading it.

I'm switching my YA PNR to Half-Blood (Covenant, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout so far this one has really caught my interest :)

message 85: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Oh I've never heard of that series! I'll definitely have to check it out!

I realized that the book I wanted to read for YA-PNR had a prequel novella so I'm reading that one now.

D.G. | 2752 comments LOL, I glad you guys liked it. I put it in Msg. 8. :)

I started my YA-PNR book and I'm liking it a lot. So far no TSTL attitude from Kaylee **crossing fingers it stays that way!**

message 96: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I've started reading my Free Space read The Darkest Lie (Lords of the Underworld, #6) by Gena Showalter but I'm not as far in as I would like. I've been swamped with end of semester quizzes, presentations, grades and writing final exams. Hopefully, I will manage to finish it over Friday and Saturday.

message 97: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Don't kill yourself trying to finish the free read this week, Lauren. We have plenty of time!

This week I got from the library: Tangle of Need (Psy-Changeling, #11) by Nalini Singh and Fair Game (Alpha & Omega, #3) by Patricia Briggs . I really hope one fits the shelf because I need to read them next week! (There's a wait line for both at the library.)

message 98: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Thanks D.G.
I'm almost halfway through and am enjoying it so far. The main couple are endearing (even though I have some difficulty with Gideon's dialogue) but the developments in the secondary characters are definitely a highlight.
