Having written 5 erotic novels I have had the audacity to pen "The Fifty Shades of Grey Phenomena", a study of the EL James trilogy with cross-genre writing tips, extracts from de Sade (and me) and loads of other useful stuff. http://www.amazon.com/Fifty-Shades-Gr...

Professor Challenger has mostly played second fiddle to Holmes in the Conan Doyle canon, but the character has always interested me; the flawed scientist with a big heart and a bigger ego. Considering he appeared in so few tales from the Doyle pen, it is a testament to the depth of the character that he has survived at all.
From the Lost World, to the poison in the mist, and the day the Earth screamed, he captured my imagination when I was twelve, and I've loved him ever since. That, plus the fact that Doyle reports that Challenger was born in Largs, making him a Scotsman from a town just 6 miles from where I was brought up, means that when Dark Regions Press offered me the chance to play in his world, I jumped at it.
From there it was a matter of choosing subject matter and setting. As a creature feature nut, the subject shouted loudest, and the setting proved more of a problem. I was intending on a return trip to the Amazon plateau, but then I remembered Lundy Island, and everything just fell into place.
Strange lights on the moors, weird noises in the night, cattle disappearing; these things alone are more than enough to prompt Malone’s newspaper to send him to investigate. And when his old companion Professor Challenger also goes missing, the hunt is on.
The trail leads Malone to the British military, and to a research station in the Bristol Channel, where an old terror proves, once again, that some things are not meant to be contained.
Mr. Meikle continues to write outstanding stories, and Professor Challenger: The Island of Terror is no exception, it further cements his place as one of the best storytellers writing today and I highly recommend it. - FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND
Willie's lean writing style strips away any superfluous prose to throw the reader into a non-stop, action packed and glorious Saturday Morning matinee style romp that will not fail to entertain. - GINGER NUTS OF HORROR
It’s a tightly-plotted, fast-paced story, in the classic pulp tradition. Meikle captures the feel of the characters with consummate skill. I recommend it highly. - THE BRITISH FANTASY SOCIETY

I LOVED the Conan Doyle books. Nice!

With my marketing efforts underway and my books uploaded on all the major writer’s sites, I am about ready to start my quest to write three novellas in the next year. I’m leaning toward the Dystopian genre, with a little sci-fi fantasy thrown in. I’m going to try and do a series, building on the plot book after book. I do have a few ideas that have been swimming around in my head for a few years and I recently pulled the “ideas” file from my cabinet. This file was thick with scraps of paper on which I’d written plots and story ideas of the last two decades. As I slowly read through each scrap I suddenly realized that I’ve already subconsciously incorporated most of these ideas into existing novels. In these notes, I saw the birth of IMAGINATION and DROP OUT and several others and realized I couldn’t repeat these ideas. As I filled my wastebasket with stales concepts, I suddenly came upon something fresh. An idea I’d penned on a beverage napkin about six years ago. The idea intrigued me. I sat for a few moments re-reading the two sentence tagline over and over, and then the small, haphazardly written summary of the plot. It was as if a curtain opened in my mind revealing a full stage of characters and plot twists. I could immediately foresee the future of these characters and how they would grow through the series. I could picture myself writing frantically through this winter as the temperature falls and the ground freezes solid. I realized right then, I have my next project.

Andy Cohen gets the surprise of his life when a talking cat shows up in his front yard.
Goldeneyes, a powerful Catmage, needs Andy’s help. Her grandmother—the wisest, most powerful Catmage alive—is missing, and her trail leads straight to Andy’s town. But there's a problem: Goldeneyes doesn't like humans very much, and Andy is impulsive and reckless. They have to learn how to work together, and they need to do it before the Wild Ones kill Nafshi and steal her powerful Magelight.
In the first installment of this new series, the reader enters a world of magical cats, dark powers, and a boy who finds himself entangled in their war.

In 1691 the town of Crossfall taught the witch Thessaly how to die. They beat her, they shot her, they hung her - but nothing worked. When they finally tried to bury her alive Thessaly set the field against them. The first man died as a gust of wind harrowed the meat from his bones. A root, flung like a dirty javelin, cut a second man down. Many more deaths followed. The Preacher Fell impaled the witch upon her very own broom but she dragged him down into the field to wait for three more centuries.
Three hundred years later Maddy Harker will murder her bullying husband Vic. She will bury him in the field as she buried her abusive father years before that. The very same field where the revenant spirit of Thessaly Cross lies waiting.
In three days Vic will rise again - a thing of dirt, bone and hatred.
Men will call him the Tatterdemon.
And hell - and Thessaly - will follow.

That sounds like a great read, Steve. I am putting it on my "To Read" list.

I'd love to get the group's feedback on the first installment before I begin writing the sequel this year.
BLURB:
Inspector Victoria Rhodes works long hours as one of the last clean cops on San Francisco’s crumbling police force. When a double murder claims the life of a city prosecutor in the exclusive covenant community of Atlantis, Rhodes is assigned as liaison between the SFPD investigation and the investigation run by the private security force known as the ASM. Public Prosecutor Katherine Radcliffe was the face of local politics, fighting to resurrect the fallen city of San Francisco by bridging the gap between the private wealth of Atlantis and the forgotten populace of the public sector. Found in the arms of her ex-sensual companion turned corporate psychologist lover, her death resonates with Rhodes and the people of San Francisco on a personal level. With tensions building between the classes and evidence mounting, Rhodes finds herself delving into the past of the man at the top of the ASM corporate ladder, an inexplicable mercenary turned upper-class messiah , known as Atlas. When she discovers that his past bears resembles her own remarkably, she can’t help but force a confrontation that brings her face to face with a man she cannot understand, a suspect she knows she has to pursue, and a truth she knows she may not want to uncover.

Sounds like something my 11 yr. old daughter would really enjoy. I have entered the giveaway - thanks!

The Giveaway runs through Jan. 31. I'd be thrilled for some of the winners to be fellow members of the group!

Thanks! My daughter was thrilled by the premise of the Catmage book, and I am going to go ahead and get her the Kindle edition. It's just the kind of thing she enjoys reading.

Read Cybersp@ce today, because the sequel, FRONTIERS, will be coming soon!
I've finished nearly 63,000 words out of my target 80,000 words for the first draft of Frontiers, the sequel to my recently released techno-thriller, CYBERSP@CE. This is going to be a great trilogy, culminating in a third novel, tentatively entitled, New Beginnings.
I'm excited to be nearly finished with Book Two, and I have high hopes for the series!

Since then I've done THE CALL OF THE DANCE, published in the Lovecraft ezine, THE COLOUR THAT CAME TO CHISWICK in Gaslight Arcanum, I'm in the middle of a collaboration on THE GHOST SHIRT with Steve Lockley, and now I have the novella from Dark Regions, SHERLOCK HOLMES: REVENANT. It is out now in both paperback and ebook.
Revenant will also be included in the forthcoming hardcover collection SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE YELLOW PERIL and other stories. Coming in late 2012 from Dark Regions Press)
It is the characters first and foremost that draws me to it. Doyle brought Holmes to life. He is instantly recognizable all over the world and has been for over 100 years. Few other writers have managed that trick.
It's also the setting for me. I was raised on Doyle, Wells and Robert Louis Stevenson and I love that historical period they covered in their work. It's also the time period I've come to prefer for my own writing and I can see me settling in there for a long time to come.
Revenant is a supernatural mystery, fast paced and taking Holmes and Watson up and down the length of Britain. They're on the run from the police having been framed for murder, and have to find out who is behind it. This proves difficult, as their adversary is capable of hiding in plain sight.
The clues lead them to an alchemist in Scotland, and deeper mysteries where they find their case linked to the quest for immortality, and a plot that might bring down the British Empire.
...a splendid and entertaining diversion.- Black Static #28
Baker Street Irregulars should quickly secure a copy of the book. - British Fantasy Society
It's a nice blend of mystery and occult adventure and you don't find that particular flavor much any more - Don D'Ammassa
Sherlock Holmes Revenant

Congratulations! That's awesome.

Price of Justice recently received a great review from Kirkus Reviews. That review, blogs about my books, and more can be viewed on my website at: http://www.alanbrenham.com

This one is a bit of a departure for me. It's darker than a lot of my other stuff, and features a protagonist who is very hard to like.
Dave is a shit; a self-obsessed wanker with few redeeming features. The fact that he reminds me a lot of myself at a certain stage of my life is neither here nor there. He's also a skeptic of all things paranormal and likes to show off.
I wanted to write about such a person having an epiphany, of sorts, and it took me down some strange alleys, into studies of philosophical discussions, and thoughts of beer, love, and my place in an uncaring Universe.
As I've said, it turned out darker than I anticipated, but there's also hope here, and I learned some stuff about myself in its progress, which was nice.
Does all human passion, all memory, all imagination come merely from the chemistry in our brains, like the movements of a clock follow from the arrangement of its cogs and wheels? Are we just clockwork dolls? Or is there an organizing principle at work, something we can ask for answers to the important questions of existence... something that might answer?
Dave Burns has asked.
Now he, and his friends, might not live long enough to understand the reply.
Full of strong and well written characters, an ever building sense of dread, topped off with a satisfying conclusion. This novella hits the mark perfectly. - Ginger Nuts of Horror
I never thought that such a short novel could have such a huge impact, not only on my emotions but also on my ideas of God, the Universe and Fate. This is a thought provoker if ever there was one ... It's totally mind blowing. - Magic of Reading
... a brilliantly written story which offers plenty of rewards for those game enough to read it. - Fantasy Book Review
It's a novella that takes a piece of metaphysics and turns it into a monster. Keep your Secret, gurus. William Meikle has the cure for what ails me. - Wag the Fox
So many superb books by our members!! Let us all make sure to support our fellow James Mason members!

Here's a few recent comments from Amazon:
“For the longest time, I’ve wondered what happened to the old-school detective novel. I’ve contemplated the fate of the gumshoe. Hot Sinatra put my mind at ease that those novels can still exist.”
“There are very few living authors who have made me literally laugh out loud, and Axel Howerton’s witty and sarcastic style promptly placed him into that category.”
“I love a book drenched in music, the kind of story that moves me through record stores and jazz clubs and just begs me to score the soundtrack in those moments between chapters.”

Welcome to Hemingway House, a halfway home for residents under repair. My name is Richard Raymonds. I'm one such resident. In 1975, I was admitted here after spending five years in a much worse place. For the next nine years, I passed the time taking notes on the comings and goings of the myriad of characters that passed through. This is their story.

Just a heads up. Web address not functioning.

Way to go, Hank! I know an English teacher who loves and teaches Shakespeare. Oh, and she belongs to a bookclub. I'll suggest that she consider this for the next meeting.

She has a great sense of humour. Between the love of Shakespear and the great sense of humour, she's either going to love it or hate it. The only problem may be that I can only find it on Amazon. She's still a go to the bookstore and hold it in your hand before you buy it.

LOL! Yep, we just celebrated our 20th anniversary. Organization was based on the much older Dog Writers Association of America (http://www.DWAA.org) which also has contests for published work. If you blog about animals, you also should check out BlogPaws.com (yep, association for everything, indeed!).
