message 161: by Helena (new)

Helena Fairfax (helenafairfax) | 29 comments I've read six out of my eight books for this challenge. I need to read another two before the end of the year! Does anyone have any recommendations? What's the best fairy tale retelling you've read so far? Thanks!

message 162: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (chibilee02) I know this isn't a fairy tale retelling, but I highly recommend The Goddess Test series by Aimee Carter which is a different take on the Hades and Persephone mythology. It's very well written and different from other YA books I've read.

message 163: by Helena (new)

Helena Fairfax (helenafairfax) | 29 comments I'll put that one on my to-read shelf Leslie, thanks! Just realised I have another fairy tale retelling to add to my list - Quest of the Hart, by Mary Waibel. It's a reverse fairy tale, with the princess as the heroine. I really enjoyed it.
Now I only need to read one more! :)

I can recommend this one. The Eye of the Beholder by Elizabeth Darcy It's a Beauty and the Beast retelling using the 1st person POV of both Beauty and the Beast. It is very nice, one of my favorites :)

Thanks Kari! I only have to read one more - I've checked this one out and it looks perfect. Thanks for the recommendation!

message 166: by Stories (new)

Stories & Verse (storiesverse) | 256 comments If I can listen in on this thread...Beauty and the Beast is not my favorite fairytale but "The eye of the Beholder" seems to be an in depth version. I have added it to my to-read bookshelf. Thanks for posting the recommendation. Its my goal for next year to face my fears and read Beauty and the Beast...

message 167: by Kari (new)

Kari | 1791 comments You're both welcome! It is a more lyrical retelling, it's not the exact story we've all read before. The writing is beautiful and because it is all written in alternating 1st person it does feel like it's got more depth. Enjoy!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Thanks, Kari!

Going to have to look out for them.

Stories & Verse (storiesverse) | 256 comments Welcome. It's available for pre-order on Amazon. Though I am not sure the stories will be HEA because they are said to have a dark and sinister twist.

message 173: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Read Sisters Red (Fairytale Retellings, #1) by Jackson Pearce

retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.

message 174: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Read Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale a retelling of the fairy tale Maid Maleen, which isn't one of the real popular ones.

It has a sweet little romance in the story but the romance wasn't always the main point of the story.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments You just keep doing great at this challenge, Melissa!

message 176: by Stories (new)

message 179: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Ah! I read the first in that series, Melissa. Did you like this latest one?

message 180: by Ipshita (new)

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 1031 comments Read The Sweetest Spell by Suzanne Selfors which was really good.

message 181: by Melissa (new)

Melissa LK, I think I would have liked it better if I had reread the 1st one before I read this one. It has been so long since I read it and this one referenced back to that one a lot so I was left feeling a bit hmmmm....

I was entertained by the book, I would say a 2.5 or 3 star book, it was OK but not great.

message 182: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Ah! Thanks for the info, Melissa.

message 183: by Deb (new)

Deb I don't think I will be able to get the last 2 books completed for my goal this year. I have enjoyed this challenge and read books I never would have looked at before. Is this challenge being repeated again next year? If so, I'm in.

We could make one with the date parameters for 2014, Deb. However, it would not be on the Home Page, but under "More Challenge."

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Okay, here is the info on it. I changed the names of the levels, as some people weren't happy being a troll.

◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Ditto!

message 191: by Stories (last edited Jan 03, 2014 03:41PM) (new)

Stories & Verse (storiesverse) | 256 comments I started HEAC early in 2013 because I had already read 4 fairytale retellings before joining. I was really excited that there was a group that actually liked reading romance and fairytales as much as I did.

I admit some of the retellings were lacking, but I like to plug through so that I can write a review about it and expand my knowledge about the original story.

I think of fairytales as a cross between historical, fantasy and romance genres.

message 192: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments I'm going to have to agree with you on that, S&V.
