Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Oh my gosh you guys this is so exciting! If New Series gets called this week then we actually have a chance of winning. I thought we'd never get here considering how poorly Mr. Randomizer has treated us this whole time. Other teams practically have blackouts and we just now are getting our first 4 in a row.

We need to finish 2011 first...all those others are just waiting for the shelf...

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Kiss of Snow (Psy-Changeling, #10) by Nalini Singh
Shelf: 2011
Finished: 8/20/12
Rating: 5/5

I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for this moment. I’ve been dying to get more of Hawke and more of Sienna; to learn more about them, to see them finally together. This book was everything I expected and more on the Hawke/Sienna front. They are completely combustible from the beginning of their relationship to the very end of the book. I love knowing that I will get to see more of them in the books to come and maybe someday we’ll get to see a new addition to their relationship when they start the family that they both deserve.

Aside from the hot, hot, hot romance of the book, the Psy stuff was once again creepy and out of control. Henry Scott is a maniac and I still don’t know what to think about the Ghost and the Arrows and Kaleb. I want to think Kaleb is good (or as good as a Psy can be, like Nikita and Anthony), but I just don’t know. And who the hell is the Ghost? I hope we find out soon, but then I also kinda hope that the series doesn’t end any time soon.

Barbara ★ I finished my 2011 book The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1) by Terry Pratchett but I can't take credit for it because I gave up and only read 150 of the 210 pages so I'm off to find another book that fits.

Barbara ★ As it turns out, V is for Vengeance (Kinsey Millhone, #22) by Sue Grafton which I just finished this morning appears on the 2011 shelf. So here's my review...

Title/Author: V is for Vengeance - Sue Grafton 8/22
Series: Kinsey Millhone #22
Read: August 22, 2012
Rating: ★★★★
Shelf: 2011
To-Be-Continued? yes

Review:
This has a strange start and actually takes a while to even introduce Kinsey, the heroine of this series. I kept thinking WTH is going on and who are these people. Once it became clear, I enjoyed this multi-POV story. Of course since she is the heroine, we had Kinsey's take on things but we also get rich-girl Nora's outlook on life and even bad guy Dante's opinion on things. I found it interesting though at times totally illogical. I th9ought the entire character of Marvin to be bizarre. One minute he's all over Kinsey to find out what happened to his fiance Audrey and the next he's berating her for her strategy -- bipolar much? And what the heck is up with her eating at Rosie's Diner every night? It's one thing if the food is great but the bizarre Hungarian dishes are totally disgusting and inedible and Rosie barely speaks English so WTH is the point of going there night after night?

I haven't read this series in order but it doesn't even matter since Kinsey doesn't have a man so there isn't any build up of a relationship to worry about. She just floats from one investigation to another with her elderly landlord and friend Henry as her sounding board and her addiction to Rosie's to keep her grounded. A thoroughly enjoyable series that gets somewhat better as the books go on but somehow the annoying behaviors never change.

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 1376 comments Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1) by Lauren DeStefano

Read: 8.22.12
Rating: 4/5

Review:
I can see why everyone has absolutely loved this book. I don't think I loved it as much as everyone else, but it is an amazingly unique world and so different from anything I've read. I love Rhine's strength, but that she still has weaknesses. I love the sinister evil that comes from Housemaster Vaughn. Rhine's sister wives and they way the help each other is beautiful. It really is a great book. I hope the second book is just as good, if not better.

I love Mindy Kaling on The Office, so it was really nice to listen to the audio book read by her. Very funny! Now, if only Amy Poehler would write a book! That would be awesome!!!

If New Series is chosen, we better read really quick because there are 4 teams that need this shelf to win.

I already have decided what book to read if it gets pulled. And I made sure it's on hand.

message 427: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments So have I, and so have people on team 17. Team 1 could win but they haven't read anything on their row. I feel for the readers on that team.

Team 12 hasn't picked yet but I'm sure they will.

So teamies, let's pick! new series has 4 potential winners, no other has that many.

message 428: by Paris (new)

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Mine's likely going to be The Gathering (Darkness Rising, #1) by Kelley Armstrong or The Selection (The Selection, #1) by Kiera Cass . I have both currently on hand. But if Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh comes in before that, then I'll likely choose that one.

Man I hope New Series gets picked or one of the 2 non winning shelves. That would be kinda fun, even if they do nothing for us, at least that means the game doesn't end yet.

message 429: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments I am going with either Trance (MetaWars, #1) by Kelly Meding or Switched (Trylle Trilogy, #1) by Amanda Hocking I don't know if

Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy, #1) by Jennifer Estep is on the list, but if I have time to look, I might do that one.

The book I was going to read is verboten, seems like I read book 2 in the series (not even realizing I had it) some time ago, and never read book 1. Oh well.

It would be fun, but it's hard to believe that will happen.

And what a worthless shelf that is for us! I guess we are in polka dot city too.

message 432: by Paris (new)

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Yeah, but this is the last non winning shelf. There will be a winner next week...

message 433: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments Sure would have been nice to have two possibilities....

message 434: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments So for Magic I will read Magic Without Mercy (Allie Beckstrom, #8) by Devon Monk or Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews or Tinker by Wen Spencer or finally, Darklands (Deadtown, #4) by Nancy Holzner

I didn't actually find Darklands on the magic list, but I looked up all the tags and discovered one person had put it on a magic shelf. I just got it yesterday so I'm guessing it hasn't been out long. It would be up in the 150-250 range where the 1 person is. Don't have time to find it!

message 435: by Paris (new)

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments lol I don't blame you. If I have a feeling it's low end like that, I'll go to the book and search the shelves there. A lot faster and easier when you it's shelved 1 time like that.

I'm either going to read:

Chill Factor (Weather Warden, #3) by Rachel Caine Grave Memory (Alex Craft, #3) by Kalayna Price Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews or Biting Cold (Chicagoland Vampires, #6) by Chloe Neill

message 437: by Suzanne (last edited Aug 25, 2012 01:14PM) (new)

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 1024 comments I'm either going to read Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle, #1) by Libba Bray not sure yet though...

message 438: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments Darklands (Deadtown, #4) by Nancy Holzner

Shelf: magic
rating: ***
date: 8/25/12

Maybe I'm just getting tired of the series. This book was better than book 3, but I felt like I had read it in other books by other authors. The giant cauldron stolen from the museum, the bad things being down with cauldron, the trouble our heroine gets into with cauldron and the bad guy I didn't like last book, etc etc. Meh

On the upside, I really like her zombies, and the books best part was the beginning when she has to go present her career to the zombie students...

message 439: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I'm going to read Dark Days (Skulduggery Pleasant, # 4) by Derek Landy which is on page 28.

message 440: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 1024 comments Ok I'm going to read Magic Burns (Kate Daniels, #2) by Ilona Andrews for the magic shelf.

message 441: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Dark Days (Skulduggery Pleasant, # 4) by Derek Landy

Dark Days - Derek Landy
Series: Skulduggery Pleasant #4
Read: August 26, 2012
Rating: ★★★★★

I love this series! It has the coolest hero (a living skeleton named Skulduggery Pleasant) and a great heroine (a 16 year old girl named Valkyrie). And a cast of over 20 characters, half good guys and half bad. Magic abounds and Valkyrie and Skulduggery win some and lose some. It's a roller coaster of a ride from start to finish. Totally enjoyable.

message 442: by Paris (new)

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Wow you ladies are fast. Busy weekend so no reading for me. But I'll get mine done before the weekend when New Series will be called.

message 445: by Paris (new)

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Chill Factor (Weather Warden, #3) by Rachel Caine
Shelf: Magic
Finished: 8/28/12
Rating: ★★★★

After DNFing the first book in this series, I am really glad that I gave it a second chance. I love Joanne and the world that Rachel Caine has created for her. The last two books have been crazy filled with action and emotion. In Chill Factor, I found myself on a rollercoaster ride unsure of what was going to happen next and I loved every minute of it…okay almost every minute. There were some points that lagged a little, but I overlooked them because I knew that they would mean something in the end.

There are so many things that I want to say about what I love about this series and this book, but it would give a lot away. I think Joanne is a great character, I love her attitude and her witty comebacks and comments. It’s refreshing given all of the hell she goes through each book. I really look forward to continuing Joanne’s story by reading the next book in the series.

message 447: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments So for psychic I'm going to read Once Burned (Night Prince, #1) by Jeaniene Frost even though I've tried a zillion times and couldn't get into it.

But, you can never tell with those other 3 teams. They might lose electricity, win a million dollars and forget to finish their psychic book, accidentally read a physics book, or even read that Shakespeare book I told them to read - anything could happen!

message 448: by Paris (new)
