I know exactly what you mean, I've had that problem lately. I have had all the books but thirteen for quite some time....I may even look further, as I don't have all my PN books posted here

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Of those I've read the first 2. I liked A Brush of Darkness and have the next book in the series in my room waiting to be read. Succubus Revealed was good. I love Richelle Mead and that series, I just wasn't that fond of the ending, but it made sense for the series.

Good luck picking.

Barbara ★ IMHO I would skip Bloodring (Rogue Mage, #1) by Faith Hunter . It's a complicated, confusing and rather violent. I just finished the third one and I really wish I had passed these up.

I already have it and book 2, got them used a while ago. I am not getting book 3 because I read your review. ;-)

Read: 8.13.12
Rating: 4/5

Review:
It's been awhile since I read the first book in this series but I knew Shade was very different from Eidolon. I really liked Shade but I liked Runa more. She was courageous, and determined. There was a definite change from the beginning of the book to the end of the book. I have read the first two books in Ione's Lords of Deliverance series which I know is a spin off from this one so it's nice to get more background on the characters that appear in LoD. I'm most excited about reading Kynan's story, and Wraith's. I think those two are the most interesting characters in the series.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
Finished: 8/13/2012
Rating: *****
Shelf: Urban Fantasy
I'm not a history buff and I'm not very familiar with American History. However, I loved this book! The way the author blends Lincoln's life and adds a Vampire storyline is genius! I could definately believe that Abraham Lincoln was a vampire hunter! This book makes me want to pick up a Lincoln biography so I can compare and contrast fact and fiction. Awesome job!

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments Finished my angels book A Brush of Darkness (Abby Sinclair, #1) by Allison Pang
read 8.13.12
Rating **1/2

A bit too much traditional romance for me (girl finds boy, they fall in lust, something comes between them, they can't seem to figure it out and have to play games, and 20 books later, they get back together.) TMI on the sex - although if she ever had made it with the unicorn, it might have piqued my interest more. I'm not a big fan of PNR.

I did enjoy the second half of the book much more than the first. I had started this about 5 times and never got past page two. I rate the first half a 1/2 star and the 2nd half better, so it ended up with two 1/2 because the book was okay.

Loved the WOW references although they are going away since she won't play (and why kill her poor teammate? not fair!)

Since I have book 2, I will read it and hope it improves. There are some clever ideas, but this really needs more character development. Can they all be bigoted scum who cheat, kill, lie and basically seem like a bunch of folk you don't want to meet? No, so that needs to become more clear.

I loved the WoW references in this book too. Totally made me laugh out loud. I'm sorry you didn't really like the book overall though. I hope that you like the next one more. I have it sitting on my shelf at home and it's on the Angels shelf too, I just don't know if it's what I want to read right now.

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments I still haven't picked an Angels book. I started one The Mephisto Covenant The Redemption of Ajax (The Mephisto Covenant, #1) by Trinity Faegen and had to DNF it. Horrible. I'm trying Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor cause it sounds so good and people seem to love it, but the beginning is really making me wonder who cares, so not sure this is the one either. I have Immortal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #2) by Larissa Ione in paperback at home, so that might be the winner, but I have to start it and see. I hate being so indecisive.

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments So I was looking at this on Saturday. We want the next shelf to either be vampires or 2011. If we get one of those then we could conceivably be set up for a win the following week.

What we don't want called are the following shelves:
Reader's Choice (Teams 4, 13 and 18 will go for a win with that)
Kick Ass Heroine (team 3)
Dragons (team 11)
Male Lead (teams 16, 17, 7)
New Series (17)
Sci Fi Romance (3)
New2You Author (5)
Dark Fantasy (11)
Psychic (12)
Paranormal Romance (16)

That leaves magic, paranormal fantasy and Favorite Supe as shelves that would keep us in the game but not help us any.

Barbara ★ Demons Prefer Blondes (Demons Unleashed, #1) by Sidney Ayers

Title/Author: Demons Prefer Blondes - Sidney Ayers
Series: Demons Unleashed #1
Read: August 14, 2012
Rating: ★★★
Shelf: Angels
To-Be-Continued? yes

Review:
I enjoyed the storyline but I thought the book was too drawn out with too many irrelevant characters (though I'm sure they will have a place eventually). I love it when characters banter with snarky humor, but this wasn't so much snarky as childish humor. For most of the book, Lucy was really irritating and clueless. And Rafe was such a whiner with no self-esteem at all. It got to be annoying as hell. I'm hoping in future books the dialogue improves and the characters get some backbone. I actually liked the secondary characters Dominic (Rafe's best friend) and Serah (Lucy's) and poor Coby (Rafe's sister) better than the hero and heroine. I liked the world Ms. Ayers created and feel that future book such flow better now that all the initial info dumps are complete. Though I really think that Lucy was too accepting of her demon status especially since it totally came from left field. The most bizarre things were instantly taken as fact which seemed unlikely. All in all a decent start to the series; it surely peaked my interest.

Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh
Read: 8/16/2012

Shelf: Angels

I had a couple of complaints with this book. I had completely forgotten the plot from the first book, so I wish she had recapped what had happened in the story a little better. There are too many angels to keep track of. I still have no idea which angels are which and who belongs to who and it's feeling a bit like Laurel K. Hamilton. I didn't get into this story until about 1/2 through. I kept trying to figure out what was going on. Other than that, it was alright. I'll probably read the next one during the next Bingo Game when they call the Angels shelf.

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments I am currently on my third chance at an Angel book and so far so good with Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee . I'm really hoping that this is it, although I have Immortal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #2) by Larissa Ione and Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson #3) by Darynda Jones waiting in the wings just in case. Grrrr.

Totally DNF'd Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor and The Mephisto Covenant The Redemption of Ajax (The Mephisto Covenant, #1) by Trinity Faegen

I really like the Charlie Davidson series, funny and well written. Those seem to get read soon after I get them! Good luck, I don't know anything about the others (although I noticed Mephisto got a lot of one star reviews...)

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee
Shelf: Angels
Finished: 8/18/12
Stars: ★★★★★

I apologize now if this review is a little disjointed. I just don’t know exactly what to say about this book or how to really put into words the awesomeness that is Angelfall. Five stars almost isn’t enough.

Angelfall is one of those books that from the first sentence I was hooked. I could tell that it was going to be dark and frightening in the way that I love. The tone of the book reminded me so much of Sophie Littlefield’s Aftertime series that I found myself getting really excited. I loved that series so much because it was just absolutely crazy and haunting and as I kept reading Angelfall I knew that I had found something just as good.

What is so surprising about the book is that it technically is a YA book since Penryn is 17 years old. But it doesn’t read like a YA. Even when Penryn talks about being a teenager or makes teenage comments, it still doesn’t feel like a YA. Since I started the book I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I recommended it to a friend when I was only 6% of the way in. I know that this will be a book that I can’t stop thinking about for a long time to come and it will be high on my read and read often list. Just like the Aftertime series. I just wish I could jump back into Penryn’s world right now, but sadly it looks like it’ll be awhile before book 2 in the series is available.

Deidre (AlaskaReader) | 267 comments The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Shelf: 2011
Finished: 8/19/12
Stars: ****** (yes, six)

For a variety of reasons, I could not sleep last night, so I read this book instead. I must admit, the narrator hooked me. This line is a sample of the book - how it takes so many things and turns them upside down:

I could introduce myself properly, but it's not really necessary. You will know me well enough and soon enough, depending on a diverse range of variables. It suffices to say that at some point in time, I will be standing over you, as genially as possible. You soul will be in my arms. A color will be perched on my shoulder. I will carry you gently away.

At that moment, you will be lying there (I rarely find people standing up.) You will be caked in your own body. There might be a discovery; a scream will dribble down the air. The only sound I'll hear after that will be my own breathing, and the sound of the smell, of my footsteps.

Back to my review - of course, Death only notices that you are caked in your own body, not that you are covered in blood or anything else. Death, as the narrator, has a view of everything that is so different from our point of view.

I have read a lot of books that include the Holocaust. Although they often move me, I don't want to reread them. This one requires it. I am sorry I don't have it on my Kindle, because the Kindle allows me to save sentences, paragraphs, etc, that I want to keep.

This is set in Germany, starting in 1939 or so. The Book Their is a young girl, not Jewish, whose parents are dead and who lives with a foster family. Death becomes fascinated with her, and so did I.

I cried during parts of this. I laughed at some places. The language used by the author was powerful and dragged me around by the throat. All the characters are vivid. I am exhausted, not only by no sleep but by the feelings aroused in me. If you haven't read this, read it.

I just now thought that, although this was on the first page of the link, it is not a series...Do I need to read a series?

message 396: by Paris (new)

Paris (pah13) | 1183 comments I don't think it has to be a series, just a book on the shelf of the week.

And per the FAQ I just found:

Q: Do all the books have to be part of a series?
A: Since our group focus is on PNR & UF series reads, I'd prefer to keep it to books of that nature, but it's not a requirement.

Warrior (The Fallen, #3) by Kristina Douglas

Read: 8.19.12
Rating: 4/5

Review:
This book wasn't as good as the first two in the series but I really enjoyed it. It was a fairly quick read which was nice, and very interesting things happened regarding the Fallen. I wish there was more of a development into Tory's goddess abilities. I liked Michael, but I don't feel like he changed enough with his love for Tory or maybe I just keep trying to compare him to Raziel and Azazel. I'm excited for the next book.
