Emily | 266 comments Congrats Jackie! It depends if you guys want to try a coffee place or a place that serves alcohol and food. We could try Black Star like the first meet up. I know of a coffee place: Flightpath that has outdoor setting and is never crazy busy. I would try to aim for a place that is around 45th or so since that seems to be central for everybody.

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Ohhh, I'm in Austin! I'd like to come out and chat about the book, but I'm still 3rd in line for it at the library. I'll be lucky if I can check it out before the show. Maybe next month, I guess. :)

I did manage to pick up the alt though, with no hold! Yay me! :)

message 203: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Hey Ender it'd be great for you to come out. We're picking a place if you have an opinion to meet this Sunday at 1pm

message 204: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Unfortunately, I haven't read anything from this month yet. I just got my hands on the alt book yesterday, and I have to finish the book I'm currently reading before I start it. I'll come along next month, after I've had a chance to catch up with everything.

message 205: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sflanagan19) | 127 comments I won't be at the in-person meetup this weekend, sadly, but either the 15th or the 29th works for me for the G+ hangout. I've started the main pick so I should have something to say by the 15th. I'm flexible! Are there any other folks that want to do the G+ hangout that have a preference for the 15 or 29th?

message 206: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Congrats, Jackie! I should probably be able to make it, but I vote for a change of venue :) Nothing wrong with Apothecary, just ready for new scenery.
Yays or Nays?

message 207: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Yes a new venue is good how about black star or flightpath?

message 208: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments I haven't been to either, so let me know which you prefer. Black Star is closer to me, and Flightpath is on...Duval, ooh, isn't that where Sweet Ritual is??? I could swing by and get a pumpkin sundae ;)

message 209: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments And I just dropped off the main pick at the Millwood branch today, so it should be available soon!

message 210: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Okay let's all try Black Star today at 1pm I'll see you guys there! If you don't know me I'll be there with a kindle and a VF shirt on.

message 211: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Sounds good!

message 212: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Thanks, Katie. I'm now next in line, yay! Hopefully whoever gets your copy will read it and return it quickly! :)

message 213: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackpurdy) | 120 comments Hey everyone! Hope you had a good time at Black Star!

Next up is the G+ Hangout this month - since we're almost upon the 15th, why don't we give ourselves a little more time to read both books and go with Thursday the 29th at 8 PM? It'll be after the regular Hangout, but I think that will be okay.

I will be unable to host a watch party this month on the 27th. Would anyone else like to give it a go, or shall we skip it this time around?

Since December gets a little crazy with holidays and traveling, I thought we could go ahead and nail those dates down. Still not sure when the actual VF Hangout will be, but for our stuff, do we want to go ahead and set our dates:

In-person - Sunday 16th, 1 PM
G+ hangout - Thursday, 20th, 8 PM

The 16th isn't the 2nd weekend, but it'll give us more time to read before meeting up.

Sound good/bad/neutral?

message 214: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Chapman | 83 comments I've got family in town in December starting on the 16th so I'm out from that point on. But hopefully I can come to the November G+ one...

message 215: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sflanagan19) | 127 comments Thursday the 29th at 8pm works for me for this month's G+ hangout!

As for December, I won't be able to make the in-person hangout this month. But the G+ hangout on the 20th works well for me. I'm looking forward to chatting with you guys!

message 216: by Lily (new)

Lily | 2 comments Hey guys, I just moved to austin from Dallas this past month and would love to join the Austin hangout! :)

message 217: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Welcome, Lily! Read back through our comments and you'll see how it basically works. We do an in-person hangout each month (usually the 2nd weekend), and a google+ hangout once a month near the end of the month. We've recently started watch-parties for the live broadcast, which still needs a host for this month!

The 27th is my birthday (30! AAAAH!) but I'll be in College Station unfortunately :( Otherwise, I would love to have you guys over. Especially because I just bought some whipped cream flavored vodka. OMG...creamsicle martini, anyone? Root beer float martini? Maybe next month ;)

message 218: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments I can make it to the Dec 16th in person. Thursdays are no good for me, but that's okay.

message 219: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Chapman | 83 comments Katie wrote: The 27th is my birthday (30! AAAAH!)

The 28th is mine. 40. I'd scream like you did but I just don't have the energy anymore. ;D

message 220: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sflanagan19) | 127 comments Katie, I also will be in College Station...if you're available, we could have our own watch party in College Station!

message 221: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Sounds great, Sarah! I'll message you

message 222: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments At this point, I won't even get to watch the show live. I've been on hold at the library for the book since the first few days it was posted, but people aren't reading/returning/picking-up-their-hold in a timely manner. One person left it on hold at their home library for over a week before picking it up!

Grrr...I'm so frustrated.

Thanks Katie! I'll try my best to make the next hangout, my schedule is super sporadic at the moment due to my new job!

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Re: Ender's comment;
A note about the Austin Library system:

It's so messed up! Grrr, there have been plenty of times that I've put a hold on a book that is available, but at a farther away location than I want to go to, and it's taken OVER a week (closer to 10 days) for the book to even arrive at my library. This is totally unacceptable to me, and I was asking for it every day (it was one of the past VF ones). One of the librarians finally told me that when a book gets put on hold, it gets placed in a bin with a bunch of other books going all different locations and then shippped to a sorting facility, where they then are sorted, placed in more bins, and shipped to the correct library. They showed me an "employees only" room in the library, and I kid you not, there were 8 or 9 stacked big bins just sitting there, not opened! He said that they don't really "have time" to go through all of them. OMG! I need to become a librarian; I would sort that sh*$ out RIGHT away!

Anyway, my advice would be this:
When books are available, put them on hold in the location they are shown and go get them, OR
go to Half Price Books, where I've found some of the VF picks for $2-3.

Also: when I put White Trash Zombie on hold (it was available at my location), it still took a few days, so I went in and asked about it...they said it was listed as "Lost." I audibly growled, went to the Fiction section, looked under the author's name, and guess what? It was one shelf down from where it should have been. Lazy. Ass. Librarians.

Rant over. Thank you for the venting session ;)

message 225: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackpurdy) | 120 comments I'm going to see if I can get the events made for the G+ hangout this Thursday at 8 PM, and for the December dates. I figure we can play December by ear - we might have smaller attendance, but it'd be nice to give it a go. Especially since next months books are looking to be smut-tastic :)

For those new to the thread, the G+ hangout is our own video chat. Send me your G+ profile link (looks like: https://plus.google.com/u/0/104512184...) and I'll add you to my Vaginal Fantasy Circle. About 5 minutes before 8PM on Thursday, I'll start a hangout and invite everyone in the circle (if you're in the circle and don't want to be, let me know and I'll remove you). You can message me if you have any questions.

I'll hopefully be sending out the Goodreads invites to all the events soon.

Happy Birthday in advance to Katie and Kimberly!

message 226: by Marj (new)

Marj (selkie86) I live in Austin and would love to attend future hangouts (virtual and/or in person). I don't think I'll be able to participate this Thursday (class/work), but I may be able to attend future ones. I'll send my G+ Link momentarily...

message 227: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sflanagan19) | 127 comments I'll be hosting the G+ hangout tonight, if people are still interested/up for it! It's tonight at 8pm. For those of you who are new to the thread, make sure you send me your G+ profile link so that I can include you. If you're planning on joining in tonight, please let me know!

message 228: by Ender (last edited Nov 29, 2012 10:50AM) (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Katie, yes, the hold system for APL sucks, mostly because they stay "in transit" for far too long. It should take at most three days. One day for the sending library to pull the book, one day at the sorting facility, and one day for it to arrive at the receiving library and get put on the hold shelves. In any case, yes, I use the same method you described if I need something asap, unless all books are checked out. You're stuck with whatever book comes in first at that point, as with White Trash Zombie.

I still have not gotten the darn book, though my book is finally en route to me. Several days too late for the VF official hangout AND the Austin one. :(

I won't get to attend the G+ this month either since the APL doesn't even have Dragon Actually. I'm broke as hell, and there are other things I need to spend my money on besides books, especially when I can check out thousands of books for free at the library.

message 229: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments FYI: I bought the main pick for December on my kindle; when I'm finished (which won't be long) if any of you have a kindle and want to borrow it, we can do that :) I think I just need an email for the borrower, which you can message to me.

Does anyone know the rules on that for kindle? Can a book be lent out more than once? I know you can't do more than once at a time, but consecutively?

message 230: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Oh oh oh, I have a Kindle, yes please!!! :D

I have no idea how to borrow books on it though (but I think I remember reading it can only be done once). I've only downloaded freebies off project guttenburg so far.

message 231: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Ok, I believe the way it is done is through amazon.com. You send me your email and I go onto my account, then under account settings choose manage my kindle, then find the book title and under "actions" click "loan this title." It guides you from there, you should receive an email from amazon telling you when the title will be available for you to download.
It won't be long, I'm halfway through the book now...

So, while I'm at it, anyone willing to lend me the alt pick (when you're finished)?

message 232: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Hey, Katie, I'll happily and patiently wait. I read these books in 1-2 nights, so I'll have plenty of time before the meet. And...I'm just happy I'll get to read it at all! :)

Also, the alt pick is available for download from the Austin library in ebook form. I've not downloaded anything from the library yet, so I don't know how it's done, but here's the link.

message 233: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments That's actually the main pick (which is what I have), the alt is the Dragon one. They look out of order on the VF page, but if you look underneath, it says Main pick for Succubus Blues and alt for Dragon Actually

message 234: by Ender (new)

Ender Wiggin (enderwigginout) | 137 comments Ohhhhh...well, that's good. Now I can download Succubus Blues at my leisure and watch the VF hangout live! Yay me! :p

They rarely say much of anything about the alt pick, so I doubt I'll be spoiled much. :)

message 235: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Sometimes these books can be found on the cheap at half priced books. I found Kushiel's dart for $3 and those books are giant. I also found some other past VF picks

message 236: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Also so exciting when they read some of my comments last hangout!

message 237: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Emily wrote: "Also so exciting when they read some of my comments last hangout!"

I know, we totally dominated! They asked my question about White Trash Zombie! :)

message 238: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Sweet!

message 239: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Lets start talking about location so it won't be a last minute thing. I liked Black Star Coop last time but it was hard to find (a little hidden) and they mostly had alcohol. I vote for a place that has coffee. Epoch is on North Loop and it shouldn't be too busy on a sunday afternoon. I'd be fine with Apothecary too.

message 240: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments ^Love that idea; coffee place would be a little better for discussion, and Apothecary is great, but dark. I like the idea of comfy chairs and hot drinks.

message 241: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackpurdy) | 120 comments Sounds good to me!

message 242: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Epoch it is. See you ladies there!

message 243: by Elsie (new)

Elsie | 17 comments I'm sorry, I'm really behind on this. When are we meeting at Epoch? I'd like to try and make it this month if I can :)

message 244: by Pat (new)

Pat | 5 comments I sure would like to meet for the live cast. Was there anyone up for that?

message 245: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Elsie wrote: "I'm sorry, I'm really behind on this. When are we meeting at Epoch? I'd like to try and make it this month if I can :)"

Yes Epoch Sunday at 1pm. It's near lamar on North Loop. I'll be there with a VF Black shirt on and a kindle!

message 246: by Elsie (new)

Elsie | 17 comments yikes! It looks like I'm not going to be able to be there after all. I'm determined to get to another meet at some point though :)

message 247: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Im here on the couch!

message 248: by Emily (new)

Emily | 266 comments Well it looks like this next hangout will be December 30th. If anyone is interested I'm willing to have a hangout party that night. If not because of the holidays that's cool. Just seeing if there's interest.

message 249: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle (fortifiedbybooks) Getting together on the 30th sounds good to me. I got involved in VF kind of late in the game, and decided not to go to the get together on the 16th since I hadn't even started the books yet.

message 250: by Beth (new)

Beth | 31 comments I probably won't do the hangout, but I'm eager to start coming to the meetups again. I was out for the last one because I was in the hospital, but I'm out and feeling good. Reading Outlander right now. God I hated Dragon Actually!
