Now, his mission is to bring joy to children around the world with the help of magical elves and a smart Workshop similar to the Room of Requirement from the Harry Potter series. But when someone steals his brand-new sleigh—jeopardizing his mission and threatening millions of smiles—Kris snaps back into operative mode and promises that every child will wake up happy on Christmas morning.

Hardly a saint, this St. Nick delivers high-velocity lead to the bad guys before delivering presents to the children. To achieve his objective, the former mercenary dusts off his old skill set and takes down anyone standing in his way. Armed with far more than holiday cheer, Kris starts a globe-trotting manhunt that races from the North Pole to Miami, New York City, to retrieve his sleigh.

Speaking of the sleigh: This is another tongue-in-cheek aspect of the story, as the sleigh looks more like “a bird of prey or maybe a stealth ship out of a sci-fi film.”

An intriguing blend of genres

In Christmas Kringle: Silent Night, the contrast between holiday cheer and tactical fury is surprisingly charming. The story never takes itself too seriously, which makes the blend of violence, humor, and heart work better than expected.

This fast-paced Christmas action novella is filled with sharp humor, explosive action scenes, and one-liners reminiscent of the Die Hard movies. Anderle blends science fiction, fantasy, and military thriller into something wildly entertaining and delightfully unhinged. It’s violent, chaotic, and definitely not your cozy Hallmark holiday tale, and exactly what makes it such a fun ride.

If you enjoy action-heavy thrillers with a playful twist, or if you’re simply looking for something different to read during the holiday season, the Christmas Kringle Series is a splendid choice. Her predictable existence is upended by a cryptic call from Italy: her estranged grandfather has died, leaving her an inheritance. Yet it comes with strict instructions: retrieve it in Venice and return to New York before opening it.

Intrigued but wary, Serenity and her best friend, Zelana Dewan, travel to Italy. What begins as a straightforward journey quickly spirals into a perilous adventure as Serenity is plunged into a world of dark magic, ancient conspiracies, and secrets entwined with her family’s mysterious past. Along the way, Serenity is joined by the enigmatic American Vincent Crowley and her friend Alistair McKnight.

Compelling cast with need for depth
Usually, the first-person perspective doesn’t appeal to me. But this time, it serves its purpose well because it offers an intimate look into the protagonist's thoughts and emotions. Serenity Blake is a strong and intelligent woman, but her major trust issues and reserved demeanor add layers to her personality. She has a unique gift—or curse, as she often feels—which allows her to see and communicate with ghosts. Her wit and sass make her an engaging lead, and these qualities shine as she navigates the surrounding dangers.

Serenity’s fighting skills and paranormal abilities are handled effectively. We learn just enough about her powers and her grandfather’s mission to protect magical artifacts to want to know more.

The supporting characters are fleshed out enough to feel distinct, even if some exhibit far too familiar tropes. Zelana provides humor and emotional grounding. Vincent Crowley is intriguing, while Alistair McKnight is a steadfast, reliable, and likable ally. Together, they create a dynamic team that enhances the story’s energy.

Blend of mystery and adventure
The story starts slowly, but once it gains momentum, it delivers an engaging plot. The pacing improves as the mystery surrounding Serenity’s inheritance unfolds. The supernatural elements, especially Serenity’s ability to communicate with spirits, seamlessly integrate into the story. Owens cleverly avoids portraying the ghosts as purely benevolent. Instead, they vary in nature, adding a layer of unpredictability to the plot.

Unlike many prequels that focus heavily on the protagonist’s origin or acquisition of powers, Owens takes a different approach. The inheritance and the resulting adventure take precedence over Serenity’s paranormal abilities. While Serenity’s ghostly interactions and Crowley’s mystic abilities add flavor to the narrative, they do not dominate the storyline. Instead, these elements enrich the world-building without overshadowing the central mystery.

A promising start with room to grow
Natalie G. Owens successfully blends paranormal elements with ancient artifacts, secret societies, and modern-day intrigue. This book establishes the urban fantasy series rather than delivering a self-contained adventure. While the story has its flaws, overall, it's quite entertaining.

However, as the series progresses, Owens must deliver on the promise of action-packed adventures comparable to Tomb Raider, The Librarian, and Indiana Jones. This prequel is a good start, but fans of those franchises will expect more high-stakes action and deeper character exploration. ...more

In The Backup Superhero, Book One of The Backup Superhero Series, Kayla Hicks introduces a world where superheroes work closely with law enforcement to protect the public. They operate under the watchful eye of the Superhero League Board. This League enforces reserves fame for top-tier heroes and relegates backup heroes to the shadows. But what happens when someone disrupts this hierarchy?

After a rough day, Tanser Girl, a D-list superhero, heads to Hero’s Cave, a bar where backup heroes unwind. There, she meets Dwighter, a fellow low-ranking hero, and Frank, the bar’s owner. When first Dwighter and then Tanser Girl receive accolades for their actions, tensions rise with their superiors. Soon, Tanser Girl suspects that something more is at play. As she and Dwighter face mounting problems, they find support in Frank and his contact Seeds. Together, they uncover betrayal in a world where heroes are supposed to protect, not deceive.

Ordinary heroes and realistic relationships
The fascinating twist in The Backup Superhero is that these superheroes have no actual superpowers. They are regular people who have trained rigorously to gain a spot in the Superhero League. Because of this, the author does not need to explain paranormal abilities or far-fetched powers.

The characters feel authentic and grounded. Tanser Girl, the main protagonist, is a capable woman who has put in serious work to earn her place in the League. Her life is not without challenges, but her struggles are not because of incompetence or naïveté. Instead, it is her colleague, Dwighter, who ignites the story’s conflict. His issues with alcoholism and his naïve, sometimes impulsive, personality make him a liability.

Hicks crafts a plausible villain in Goffman. Introduced as the “poster boy” of heroism, his polished public image does not match his true nature. While his actions as a villain are believable, more exploration into his motivations would have added depth to his character and the story.

An engaging start, but room for expansion
The Backup Superhero is an enjoyable novella that establishes a world of superheroes that feels both fresh and accessible. The League’s structured hierarchy brings to mind The Boys—though with no superpowers, no gore, and no gritty darkness. Instead, the story is suitable for readers of all ages. It balances action and drama without veering into anything too intense or controversial.

However, the novella reads more like a prequel than a standalone tale. The potential of its world is so vast that the short length feels limiting. A full-length novel would have allowed Hicks to explore the superhero system and its members. Moreover, the showdown between Goffman and Tanser Girl feels rushed.

Nonetheless, Kayla Hicks’ The Backup Superhero offers a unique take on hero stories with its realistic characters and relatable plot. While more development would have enriched the story, the novella lays the groundwork for a promising series. ...more
