So, this is 2017 calling. Society has indeed fragmented into some equivalent of Knotheads and Pussyhats and the center can't hold, whatever that means. What you found to be presumptuous edginess in 2011 seems damned prescient today. Also, I can't read this book without thinking that Percy, comfortable in his acclaim after The Moviegoer, stumbled into some Nabakov (Pale Fire, anyone?) and very suddenly held his own manhood cheap. This is his reply.
I’m re-reading this book for the first time in 20 years. In fact, I began it once again on Oct 31, 2020. As a college student first reading it in 2000, I found it an amusing and satirical 60s-tinged relic. But re-reading it on the eve of the 2020 presidential election-amidst the backdrop of crazy political divides, increased racial tensions and a worldwide pandemic, was a surreal experience. And that was before the Jan 6 insurrection and assault on the Capitol. So I have to agree with 2017 Bob, above. This novel was damned prescient.
