This may not be something you expected, but I thought this was a gem, and an unexpected one. It was written by the same author as Anne of Green Gables, but this is one of her 'adult' books. It is really good, and the main character is really kick-ass. It is historic, so some of it may not seem realistic by today's standards, but I don't think it's far off.
