I really like the Cassandra Palmer, Arcane Chronicles, Violet Eden Chronicles, and the Divinicus Nex Nest Chronicles series because they feature innocent-ish heroines who grow into their powers/abilities, and they don't come off as mean. The heroinesI really like the Cassandra Palmer, Arcane Chronicles, Violet Eden Chronicles, and the Divinicus Nex Nest Chronicles series because they feature innocent-ish heroines who grow into their powers/abilities, and they don't come off as mean. The heroines are also special is some way, and I don't care if they're "chosen" or not.
Heroines in the Kate Daniels the Bones and Cat series were a bit too strong for me, but they were okay. I dislike when the woman gets pregnant, but adoption like in Kate Daniels is okay. I'm at that awkward stage where I'm just past most YA but am nowhere near old enough to have a child. Age-wise, I'm 18. I'm conservative with my sexual values, but if the book contains graphic sex scenes, that's okay. I just skip past those. It really bothers me if the series has the woman get pregnant with a super-duper powerful baby that's a) going to have a destiny even greater than the mother b) going to destroy the world or c) super-duper special in some way.
I like books about thieves that steal for good purposes, not necessarily fantasy genre, but not books that graphically depict poverty and the rag-tag band of orphans who just want a warm meal. For example, I like the Scarab Beetle series.
I'm not too fond of private investigator plots like Charley Davidson, but I'll read them until the MC gets pregnant, and I really liked the Hidden Legacy series because the sub-Romantic sub-plot and the MC's rare gift made it worthwhile.
I like series that have little to no male POV narration/focus, and each book is about the same protagonist. I dislike it if book 1 is about Anna, book 2 is about Johnny, Book 3 is about Mary Jane, etc..
When it comes to Fantasy, I'm a bit picky. I'm not crazy about shifters, but I'll tolerate a male shifter protagonist, but not the female main character being furry. Vampires are meh, but I'd happily take them if they're sexy and sophisticated like Mircea from Cassandra Palmer. Fair Folk (Fairies) usually make me want to scream because I'm aware of actual lore. I'm looking at you, Fever! Nowhere! Nowhere! Do the Daoine Sidhe/Aos Si/Tylwyth Teg have super sexual powers that can make woman orgasm on sight, but I'll tolerate it. I get testy when authors turn the Fair Folk into grade A sociopaths or villains unless the villains are from the Unseelie court, where they can be quite the sociopaths. Alternatively, if the Fair Folk are presented as miniature pixies that fly around blessing garden gnomes, I'm going to laugh so hard.
I really like mermaids, witches to a lesser extent, non-furry females with bonds to furry things, unique magic systems like in Arcane Chronicles and Divinicus Nex Nest, and in the non-fantasy genre, honorable thieves, contemporary life with exciting things happening, and ALWAYS romance as a sub-plot in any genre, but fantasy/paranormal romance is okay while contemporary romance CANNOT have that as a main plot. No Jane Austens.
Additionally, it drives me nuts when half-breeds are somehow "inferior" to others, especially when it comes to the Fair Folk. They really valued human females and children. I mean, just read the story about Ethna the Bride and Finnbheara. They married humans, valued their offspring, etc.. Yes, there's rumors about brood mares and the men just became workers, but still...
I am not crazy about historical fiction unless it's only part of a book, such as time travel.
I hope these likes/dislikes make it easier to recommend things!
