I've never read anything by Clive Barker and I want to give him a try. Since he's written quite a lot of stuff, I'm looking for recommendations of where to start.

Things to know: 1) I'm a relative horror neophyte. I've read a ton of Stephen King, and he's one of my favorite living authors, but aside from that and a little Lovecraft, I've read almost no horror. It isn't that I dislike it; I've just never really gotten around to it. 2) I generally read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi. 3) Of Barker's films, I've only seen the first Hellraiser, and I did enjoy it quite a bit. 4) If it matters, I'm not squeamish....more

5 stars: (e.g. To Kill A Mockingbird) All-time favorites. Books that I re-read periodically, just to savor the greatness. Books that permanently changed the way I think, the way I feel, or the way I imagine. The top ten percent of all the books I've ever read.
4 stars: (e.g. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) Very good, maybe even great books. Made me laugh, cry, cringe, hurl, or think. If I gave a book four stars, it's probably one of the best books I read that year, and I strongly recommend it.
3 stars: (e.g. Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone) Not all-time classics, but more than worth the read. Maybe it was thrilling, but not overly deep. Maybe it was thought-provoking, but not all that exciting a read. In general, these are good books that I enjoyed reading, but didn't really blow me away for whatever reason.
2 stars: (e.g. The Da Vinci Code) Average to mediocre books, but not all bad. Often they have redeeming qualities - maybe they're funny, or scary, in parts - but have serious flaws. Books where the characters irritate me, or where holes in the plot or setting keep ruining my suspension of disbelief, fall into this category. Still, if you saw one of these books on my shelf and asked to read it, I wouldn't stop you.
1 star: (e.g. A Boy Called "It") I give very, very few 1 star ratings. If I gave a book one star, it's because I don't think it's a worthwhile read for anyone, not just me. I love books in general, so in order for me to hate one individually, it pretty much has to be irredeemably stupid, morally offensive or so boring I couldn't finish it....more

This is the second of his books I picked up and it has a lot of his trademarks. The settings and characters are also wonderfully described as they are quite surreal and imaginative.
