Bill Bryson's A Short History of Everything? (The earlier chapters esp.)
Second that! Bryson is excellent at laying out the progression of thought while also illuminating just how deeply weird some scientific personalities and endeavors truly are.
The Universe in a Single Atom by the Dalai Lama. It's a personal narrative of his scientific education, but also really interesting on these topics. Short too.
