Rescuing the Gospel, by Erwin Lutzer was a good, basic overview!
I looked for that after I read your review, but alas, my library has it not! I'll definitely keep it in mind, though; it looked good.
When I was a teen I *loved* THE STORY OF LIBERTY by Charles C Coffin, which you ought to be able to get on Project Gutenberg. It's probably a bit bowdlerised though. Another one which I particularly enjoyed because of its identification of some major problems with the Reformation was Otto Scott's THE GREAT CHRISTIAN REVOLUTION.
