Keith I would be wary of relying too much on very high Goodreads ratings as a measure of quality - bear in mind that they mostly only represent the views of people who chose to read and finish the book. Some people are also very generous with 4/5 star ratings. I've seen some very poor books with comparatively high ratings.

This is why most of the highest-rated books are sequels and other spinoffs. (I've created a list for the highest-rated books which aren't such: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1... )

Tytti I've noticed that very few actually good books have ratings over 4.2. Usually they are romances or something.

Keith Or sequels, prequels, spinoffs, collected editions, etc., whose readership is mostly made up of people who enjoyed their predecessors.

Heather I take the view that my reading tastes are nothing special so if they are popular then probably I will like them. I do agree that sometimes that means that trashier books get good ratings. The challenge these days is finding good books that aren't part of a multi-part saga hence the 300 word limit. Thank you for your suggestions. I look forward to reading them
