Have you read Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin? I had to read it for a class of mine and it was published in 1956, but I loved it!
Have you considered Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe??? I was so glad I gave this book a try because it was awesome and the ending was just gorgeous. I also loved the characters in the story. However this book is about everyday life and two boys discovering themselves, so it’s not really fast paced and probably not for everyone.
Well, there's the obvious Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It doesn't appear to be on your read list, and I loved it.
